July 2011 Update

Dear ,

Things are looking up.

First an update. BECA made a change in the program this year. All students who want to receive a scholarship have to volunteer full-time in a primary school for three months.

Yep. Full-time. Three-months. We give them a little money to help with transportation costs, but it isn't much.

It's a bit of a risk, but we are committed to screening out the non-serious students. We think this might help.

We figure that students who are really really serious about making a change in their life will make this "sacrifice."

This week, I visited the two schools in Masaya where our students are helping out.

I liked what I saw.

I saw happy teachers. I saw happy niņos. I saw happy principals.

So far, seems like a win-win.

Time will tell though.

13 students started this voluntary service, which we call the "BECA Brigade."

I'll let you know how many finish.

Thanks for your interest in what we are doing down here. It means a lot to us.

Sincerely,
Walter Hunchak
