January 2011 Update

Dear ,

As I write this, 2010 is almost out the door. For me, it has been a year of much reflection.

In the last few months, I have purposely slowed down my pace "doing stuff" and have spent more time thinking.

Thinking about poverty. Thinking what it means, globally, and especially what it means for BECA here in Nicaragua.

I've also come to the realization that my obsession with keeping administrative costs to a barebones minimum is not always the best thing.

It is often how non-profit entities are measured. There is no refuting that it can be a useful measure.

Nevertheless, after much consideration, I believe that the idea here is to make an impact, make a difference.

And sometimes that might mean spending a little more on organizational capacity.

Yes, every organization is different.

But each has to do what it takes to make a difference. And if that means in some cases spending more on administration to be effective, so be it.

Thanks for your support this year. It means a lot to us here.
