What you have in your home? Do you know?

As we approach the end of the year, it will soon be time for setting some New Year's Resolutions. One of these items on the list may have to do with organization. This may lead you to a task of out with the old and in with the new. While you are doing this, it is a great time to do an inventory for your home and personal items. But why would your need this information. In the unfortunate situation that a person may have a large claim such as a fire, an adjuster will ask a person to come up with a list what is lost.

Here is a test, close your eyes and think of one room in your house, now try to come up from memory with a list of items that are in that room, such as furniture, art, floor covering, decorations, TV & entertainment related. It is actually a pretty difficult task. Maybe even overwhelming.

Here are some thoughts that might help. First take it one room at time.  Maybe even starting with one type of item such as the furniture. Then go room to room. There is software available that can help arrange this. Your insurance agent may have access to software as well that they can make available. Another method we have seen used is video. It is easier and less time consuming.

While you are preparing the list, there are some items that may not be covered to the full extent in your home such as jewelry, collections, art etc. There are special endorsements that can be used for the items. This is a good time to review with your insurance company.

Once you have this inventory, find a good location to store it away from your home. Maybe in a safe deposit box or even with your insurance carrier.

Text messaging is cited as one of the biggest distractions while driving for teens. In fact, studies show text messaging has become just as dangerous as drinking and driving for teens in regards to inhibiting their ability to concentrate on the road.
