Why Mold is a Problem:

Mold affects human health in numerous ways. Mold related allergy symptoms can include runny nose, itchy eyes, wheezing, and skin rashes. Some of the other health issues commonly associated with mold exposure are allergic fungal sinusitis, infections and asthma. Mold can irritate the mucous membranes of the eyes and respiratory system. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCS) produced by mold are thought to cause headache, attention deficit, and dizziness. Toxic molds are reported to cause nausea and diarrhea, depression, headaches, tremors, kidney problems, and infertility.

ARE YOU LIVING IN AN UNHEALTHY HOME?

Mold exposure can be very hazardous to your health. Left unchecked, mold problems can multiply and be costly to remediate. Sometimes you can smell mold in the air, but still not see it on floors, walls or other surfaces in your home. Don't cover up that smell! Instead, be proactive about making your home a "Healthy Home" and correct the problem before it gets out of hand.

Mold Makers
Here are some potential problems that may cause water buildup in the structure of your home, possibly leading to mold growth, as well as the potential deterioration of building materials such as in-wall and under floor framing, insulation, drywall, flooring and other fixtures. Before you can get to work on getting the mold out of your home, you should thoroughly examine your home for any of the following problem items, and get them fixed as soon as possible.

1. Leaking Pipes: Can you hear water running but don't have any faucets on? If so, chances are you have a leak in your water pipes. Turn off all indoor and outdoor faucets, then check your water main to see if it's "running".

2. Cracked or Missing Grout: Is water getting behind your tile at the sink or in the shower/tub surrounds in your home? Fill in all missing grout and make sure your surrounds are properly caulked.

3. Old Uninsulated Single Glazed Windows: If you see mold growing and/or condensation forming on the inside of your windows, replacing the old windows with new energy efficient insulated glass windows can not only help to reduce the moisture in your walls, but also to reduce heating and cooling bills.

4. Roof Leaks: Do you find loose roofing shingles on the ground after a winter storm? Can you see dark spots appearing on the ceiling? Are your roof shingles buckling or curling? These are just a few common signs that could point to serious roof leaks. Get your roofing checked by a professional, and repaired or replaced if necessary.

5. Crawl Space Moisture: Moisture can easily accumulate in the crawlspace of your home as a result of leaking pipes, condensation, inadequate air circulation, landscaping that causes water runoff to accumulate under the house, and many other factors. Installing a vapor barrier along with one of our crawlspace ventilation systems will help to regulate the moisture levels in the crawlspace of your home.
