Greetings!
These are historic times for employee benefits in the U.S. as the Supreme Court hears arguments on health care reform.
Next week on Monday, April 2, National Employee Benefits Day will be celebrated in the U.S. In this issue, we encourage you to join in the celebration as we look at today's benefits trends. |
Celebrate National Employee Benefits Day!
All employees - regardless of where they work or what they do - have life needs for themselves and their families.
Most of us look to our employers for help in meeting many of our life needs. Our employee benefits programs are critical to maintaining the protections we need for ourselves and our families.
Our employers may offer financial support towards the costs of the plans - such as basic life insurance, health coverage and a match in our 401(k) plan. The workplace may also offer us opportunities to purchase benefits that meet our individual needs. Whether these voluntary benefits offer more life insurance, disability protection, specialized health coverage, pet health insurance, or any of the wide selection of innovative voluntary benefits plans now available, they enable each of us to choose the benefits that meet our personal needs.
You may be an employee who appreciates your employer's benefits program. Or you may work in HR or Benefits at an employer. Or you may provide plans or services that support employers.
April 2 - National Employee Benefits Day - is a good time to take a step back and reflect on the often over-looked value of the employee benefits programs offered by U.S. employers.
As an employee, April 2 is a day for you to be reminded that your benefits are valuable. Understanding the plans that are available to you through your employer is critical. Seek information. Take steps to increase your knowledge of the programs. Ask questions. Read the information your employer provides. Visit provider websites. Share plan information with colleagues and family members. All of this will increase the value to you of the benefits that your employer provides.
If you are an Employee Benefits Professional, April 2 is also "a time to recognize yourself and your peers for all your hard work and dedication. Give yourself a pat on the back for all that you do..."

And be sure to hold a place every year for National Employee Benefits Day on your Managing Benefits Calendar™.

MetLife's 10th Annual Study of Employee Benefits Trends
MetLife recently released it's 10th Annual Study of Employee Benefits Trends. It's a comprehensive analysis of employee benefits today, trends for the future and how employers and employees view employee benefits.
Here are some highlights from this year's study:
- Employers increasingly recognize that employee benefits can drive workforce strategies.
- The current economic conditions provide opportunities to increase employee options; in the future, employee paid benefits will be a more important part of employer benefits strategy than they are today.
- Benefits are important for attracting employees, even in difficult economic conditions, and they are even more important for retaining employees and helping them keep focused on their work.
- Employees continue to look to employers for financial security through employee benefits; the workplace remains the preferred place for employees to obtain benefits.
- There are differences among generations as to how they look at employee benefits and between how employers and employees perceive the value of these plans.
- More employers are seeing financial wellness and security as a partnership with their employees; there's a growing awareness that employers benefit from a financially secure workforce.
- Many employees believe that their employee benefits are an important consideration in their decisions to stay or leave a company; there's a strong relationship between benefits and job satisfaction.
