Monthly Bird Surveys at County Parks
Lynn Jakubowiz coordinates the monthly SAS bird surveys at Urfer Family Park (third Thursday) and Rothenbach Park (second Thursday) at 8 am. Each month's list at Urfer is posted on the bulletin board so visitors can get an idea of what they may see there. Both surveys will aid the county in creating future bird lists for the parks.
Anyone who would like to join Lynn and her crew is welcome. Lynn is very patient and knowledgeable so it's an opportunity for "newbies" to volunteer and to learn. Call Lynn at 364-9212.

Who Are These Crazy People?
For December, the SAS Board planned their monthly meeting to be followed by a picnic at the Celery Fields. Seeing the Sandhill Cranes fly in for the night was to cap the evening. The cranes came but so did wind and cold. Not to be deterred, the board enjoyed a delicious tailgate meal provided by Karen Jensen. Birders are a hardy group.

Sandhill Cranes Dancing
BirdFriends, though it happens every year, I never tire of seeing the Sandhill Cranes doing their ritual dancing. I know its anthropomorphic to say so, but they seem like they are so happy and full of energy and can barely contain themselves. They pick up clods of dirt, sticks or bunches of grass and leap into the air while others around them bugle in unison. A true symphony of nature. Rick Greenspun

We Need Volunteers
SAS is fortunate to have very talented members. Please consider sharing your gifts and time to the benefit of our growing, influential organization. We particularly need an historian, as well as public relations and education chairpersons.
Volunteering is a great way to meet new people with common interests. Contact Jeanne Dubi (355-1709) for more details.

Scam Alert
One of our members recently received a fraudulent phone solicitation for a donation on behalf of Sarasota Audubon. The caller asked for a pledge of dollars over a number of months and for a credit card number in order to process the pledge. This was an unauthorized request. Our organization will never call to ask for a credit card number or for any other sensitive information over the phone. The member has already alerted the credit card company and the police have been alerted to this fraudulent act. Sarasota Audubon has never given out its membership list in the past and has no plans to do so in the future. If you have further questions about the situation or our strict confidentiality policies, please feel free to contact me directly at (941) 724-1709. Thank you for the trust you place in us as your "go to" organization for birds, wildlife and the environment.
Sincerely, Jeanne Dubi
