Review of Florida's Threatened Wildlife Initiated
Our own Michelle van Deventer worked to pull information together to aid Florida Fish & Wildlife in this beginning study. This is a major step by FWC and has the potential of affording more species more stringent statewide rules. The birds now on this list for further review are: American Oystercatcher, Least Tern, Little Blue Heron, Reddish Egret, Roseate Spoonbill, Tricolored Heron, Osprey, Southeastern American Kestral, White-crowned Pigeon, Florida Sandhill Crane, Marian's Marsh Wren, Black Skimmer, Snowy Plover, and the Burrowing Owl. Thanks, Michelle, for always working on behalf of our feathered friends.

Monthly Bird Surveys at County Parks
Lynn Jakubowiz coordinates the monthly SAS bird surveys at Urfer Family Park (third Thursday) and Rothenbach Park (second Thursday) at 8 am. Each month's list at Urfer is posted on the bulletin board so visitors can get an idea of what they may see there. Both surveys will aid the county in creating future bird lists for the parks.
Anyone who would like to join Lynn and her crew is welcome. Call Lynn at 364-9212.

The Sarasota Christmas Bird Count is scheduled for Sunday, Jan 2, 2011. Participate in one of the largest and longest-running Citizen Science projects in the world. Data gathered on bird populations over the past 100 years has provided scientists with valuable information about declines and movements and helps shape National Audubon's agenda for saving them. Be a part of this critically important project. If you'd like to participate, either on a team or from your backyard, contact CBC Coordinator Judi Linell at judi@sarasotaaudubon.org or 355-3157. All reports are gratefully received.

Sandhill Cranes at Celery Fields
The Sandhill Cranes' nightly gathering and early morning lift off at the Celery Fields are attracting many people. Unfortunately some or maybe just one photographer has been feeding the cranes in order to bring them in to get a "better shot." See photo attached; note the grackles. The purpose of long lenses is to be able to shoot from afar, thus avoiding disturbing the wildlife.. Along with food come grackles, crows and gulls, not to mention that the ponds become trash heaps of human food. Sandhill Cranes have federal and state protection; feeding them is against the law. If you do go to the CF to enjoy this marvelous sight, please be aware of the law and make others aware if possible. The photo below exemplifies the problem -grackles feeding on "non-natural" foods along with the cranes.

Meet a Board Member: Sara King, Member At Large: Greeter I began birding and photography in the South Louisiana swamps and bayous in the early 1960's. I studied Fine Art at Centenary College in Shreveport, LA. and University of South Louisiana in Lafayette, LA. Arriving in Sarasota in 1969, my family soon affiliated with the Sarasota Sailing Squadron . I completed training in Radiologic Technology at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in 1973, specializing in Low Dose Mammography and DEXA Bone Density testing. I joined the Sarasota Audubon Society in t he early 1980's and soon became the Historian, The Keeper of the Scrapbooks. In the late 80's , I held the post of Secretary, and moved on to become the Greeter. I quite enjoy making newcomers and visitors, as well as returning members, feel welcome to our general meetings. When the first "Hot Spots" was being compiled, I was asked to submit sketches of local birds to illustrate it and it is an honor they have been used in all our newer editions. My illustrations have been used for fundraising, note cards, the Care Free Learner sign at Marina Jacks and general illustration as needed. I hope to use my talents as a bird illustrator in the future to help raise funds for the Celery Field Project. I am proud of my daughter Sara Beth and her daughters, Anamilok and Santosha Spickerd, who have become excellent birders, and have volunteered with SAS through the years. Now I have time to enjoy our annual "Trips and Tours", so look for me there , at the general meetings, or at Earth Days at Oscar Scherer Park, where I help with the Children's Educational tent. Good Birding, Sara Lee |
