Keep Cincinnati Beautiful - CT and East End
Make A Difference Day

Thank you to Nick Motz, Christine Carli and those who volunteered to help make the first Columbia Tusculum and East End joint project successful.  On Saturday morning, October 22 approximately 50 people helped to clean up 4 areas in our neighborhoods.  The volunteers weeded, mulched, planted day lilies, cleaned up leaves and picked up trash along Eastern Avenue, around the CT sign at Lunken Airport, the walking tunnel at Eastern & Stanley and the tunnel connecting Riverside & Walworth.

Make a Diff 1

On Eastern Avenue, volunteers pulled weeds. In Columbia Tusculum, they trimmed hedges, while down the road in Mt. Lookout, they planted flowers.

"It makes me feel really good that there's a lot of people out who want to get out and help in the community. There's so many (volunteers)," volunteer Adrianna Iliff said.

Tim McWilliams, a volunteer, said, "Hopefully, when people drive by and see us interacting like this, cleaning up and being active about it, they'll take a moment to notice."

Volunteers said they hope days like this will spread the message of working together in neighborhoods all over the Tri-State.

"You might have residents drive by that sees this group of people working, and they're going to say, 'Wow! There are volunteers that are making my community look nice. I need to do my part and make a difference in my community,'" Romaniw said.

Volunteers said the beautification of Cincinnati won't happen overnight, that's why the project must continue with the help of everyone.

RUTH LYONS' MARKER COMING TO CT
Ruth Lyons

The Columbia Tusculum Community Council is moving forward to install a historical marker for one of its famous former residents.  Resident Lesley Daley presented the proposal in August to buy an Ohio Historical Marker to commemorate Lyons' contribution to Cincinnati and for being a pioneer in her field.  The Community Council approved $2,200 for the historical marker at its September meeting. On October 25, the Ohio Historical Society approved a $750 grant to help offset the expense to Columbia Tusculum.  Daley said the marker would likely be on lower Tusculum Avenue, near the intersection with Morris Place, two streets where Lyons once lived.

Ruth Lyons, a radio and television broadcaster in Cincinnati during the mid-20th century, lived in two houses in the Columbia Tusculum neighborhood. She founded the Ruth Lyons Children's Fund in 1939, a charitable organization that still exists today. Lyons is often credited with "ushering in the new medium of television and pioneering what we know today as the TV talk show genre," wrote author Michael Banks in his book about Lyons.

"Women connected with Ruth Lyons, not just because she was married or had a child, or because she pushed them to use the vote, or because she served as their role model to step outside the traditional roles assigned them by society.  "Ruth respected their intelligence and shared their interests, which went beyond the traditional household chores and child-rearing," Banks wrote.  "Today, Oprah's style mimics that of Ruth Lyons; they share a consummate skill in communications, timing, wit, and empathy. Both developed themselves from humble beginnings, kept a 'common touch,' and once they caught on in television there was no stopping them." Lyons retired in 1967 and died in 1988.

ITS WORKING OUT HOSTS BENEFIT

On October 9, It's Working Out owner Kristen McAullife hosted a benefit for the Karen Wellington Foundation for Living with Breast Cancer. Trainer Jennifer Lynn taught a complimentary TRX/Pilates class and accepted donations for the Foundation, which was established in 2007 to honor Wellington's life and to share her legacy of living life to the fullest. The Foundation provides vacations to women living with breast cancer.

McAuliffe knew Wellington when they were neighbors in Mt. Lookout. She always admired her can-do attitude. "I would see her out in the yard playing with her kids, taking trips, and enjoying life. She wasn't about to let the cancer define her."

Heather Langer, a breast cancer survivor and It's Working Out client, makes exercise and healthy eating a priority. "The cancer made me appreciate life more and not worry about the small stuff." Langer is familiar with the Karen Wellington Foundation and recently became involved with the Pink Ribbon Girls, a group devoted to supporting younger women with breast cancer. "Events like these support women living with breast cancer, but they also bring awareness to what is a very treatable disease," she said.
