Barbecue Festival This Weekend
East End Veteran's Memorial Garden
by Lisa Wakeland, Eye on the East Side

With a little love and a lot of care the East End Veteran's Memorial Garden has grown tremendously in the past decade. East End residents, and those from nearby neighborhoods, can celebrate the garden's 10-year anniversary during a community barbecue Saturday, Aug. 13.

"My hope is to establish a Cincinnati barbecue fest and we've added a little every year," said Joe Corcoran, who founded the garden on Strader Avenue.  There will be a handful of bands at the festival and plenty of food, Corcoran said, including sauces and side dishes made from the garden's fruits, vegetables and herbs.

Joe Corcoran stands in front of the sign for the East End Veteran's Memorial Garden, which turns 10 this year.

Most of the food will be prepared on site in the smoker, bread oven and flat-top stove he built in the last couple years.  Corcoran, a Vietnam-era veteran, started the memorial garden "out of respect and love for my brother, Steven" and he's worked tirelessly to expand the garden to 55 acres, stretching between Riverview East Academy and Schmidt Field Park.

"It's a diamond in the rough and is helping spur the neighborhood," he said. "The city has a lot of property they're doing nothing with and we're using it to feed ourselves and the neighborhood.  Most years, Corcoran said the garden produces close to 1,000 pounds of food for the East End neighborhood and the Freestore Foodbank.  Corcoran, along with volunteers, keep adding small gardens and fruit trees to other plots of land. Eventually, Corcoran said he'd like to see a garden and a few fruit trees at all the schools and recreation centers in the city of Cincinnati.  "This is so important right now, but it doesn't happen overnight," he said.

There is a suggested $5 donation for the food and beer at the community festival and Corcoran said he hopes to make enough money to further expand the East End Veteran's Memorial Garden and continue the barbecue festival for years to come.

"OFF THE WALL" Painting Exhibit
Opens September 23
Cindy Mayti

The show features three of Cincinnati Art Club's Signature Members including Columbia Tusculum resident Cynthia Matyi along with Ann Harrod and Nancy Pendery.

Three Signature Members of the Cincinnati Art Club - Ann Harrod, Cynthia Matyi, and Nancy Pendery - celebrate the colorful yield of their summer painting experiences in a group art show at the historic Cincinnati Art Club Wessel Gallery in Mt. Adams. The event will begin with an opening reception on Friday, September 23, 6-10 PM; and, will continue September 24-25 and October 1-2, 1-5 PM each day. The Wessel Gallery is located at 1021 Parkside Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202.

Each of the participating artists has a distinctive style, which will provide the show a multiple personality. Over 100 unique works of original art will be on display.

Cynthia Matyi is well known for her Celtic works, and she also designs lovely, impressionistic, palette-knife paintings of the Victorian buildings in our colorful Columbia-Tusculum neighborhood. The houses are multi-colored Painted Ladies with organic shapes and unique personalities, surrounded by old fashioned flowers and shrubs.  "The closely packed houses provide charming streetscapes," comments Matyi. "Since Tusculum is a community built on hills, there is often a wacky perspective to my pictures, which are all painted "en plein air" right on the scene. I feel this gives me an opportunity to connect with the buzz of the neighborhood as well as develop a loose, vibrant picture that captures the essence of the scene and the local color at that moment."  Cindy encourages all her neighbors to show up at the art exhibit to look for an appearance of their own house for a 10% discount!  Both Framed and unframed works will be available.

Matyi is the primary organizer of the touring exhibition, "American Celtic" and her work has appeared in shows throughout the US, Canada and Europe. She has illustrated CD covers, posters and websites and gives workshops in Celtic art to students of all ages. Matyi also wrote and illustrated a children's book, "Little Town of Spirals," published in 2008.
