Please plan to attend the November CTCC meeting where three areas will be put to a vote:

    Happy Anniversary Benefit!
    beneFIT Studio Logo

Guess what? We're celebrating our 2nd birthday at BeneFIT!

At the end of October of 2008 BeneFIT opened it's doors as a Studio offering fitness and massage. We were SURE that our quirky little house on the busiest street in town would be a success! Even still, we were reminded daily that we were up against the worst economic climate imaginable, in a business that relies on people's disposable income...Scary times.

Since our open house 2 years ago, we have expanded our services, doubled our staff, and added a full AVEDA Salon! Despite all of the changes, improvements, and growing pains, our mission remains consistantly simple.

WE HELP PEOPLE FEEL GREAT ABOUT THEMSELVES.

We've seen some clients lose 50 pounds and others lose the last 5. In our Salon, we've shown people that they can look better than they every thought they could, for their wedding day or a much needed change. Through our stretching and massage services, we've helped people on the road to recovery from a physical injury or find relief from chronic pain. In my opinion...those things are recession proof.

So to start off our 3rd year, I wanted to stop and thank each and every one of our supporters, whether you come in on a regular basis or just read these goofy emails. I feel confident that each time someone walks OUT of our doors, they feel better than when they walked in. For having the opportunity to create that kind of environment for myself, my staff, and all of our patrons, we are truly thankful. Happy Thanksgiving!

East End Cafe and Happier Times

The outcome of the investigation of the fire that devastated the second and third floors of the East End Cafe last month has not yet been announced.  The fate of the building is not clear.

East End Cafe 1907 - property of Jim Farmer

But we can in the meantime celebrate the long history of the building and the family who owned and operated the East End Cafe for nearly a hundred years.

Jim Farmer's great great grandfather,  Philip Hirsch built the East End Cafe in 1887 and the family continued to operate it for three generations until 1973.

Second generation owner and son-in-law Louis Meyer and his family are seen at left in this picture taken at the back of the Cafe about 1907.  Jim's Great Grandfather, Mr. Meyer and his wife are at the far left.  The youngest Meyer seen here is Jim's grandmother, who

Jim's Great Grandfather, Louis Meyer is seen tending bar at the cafe in 1925 in this photo at right.

Jim's grandparents, the Farmer's,  continued to run the East End Cafe into the mid 20th Century.

Kroger's operated a small neighborhood grocery in the building in the 1940's,  as seen at left.  See the signs advertising "People Eat Meat!" in the lower right window.

Thanks to Jim Farmer for sending in these pictures and family memories.  And thanks most of all to Jim's family and their labor of love in building and operating this neighborhood landmark all these years.

    City of Cincinnati News
Recycle container too big?  Swap it.

Are you finding, like many of us, that the jumbo sized recycle container we received is too heavy to drag up our many steps  and too big for a small household's recycling needs?

The City has recognized the one-size-fits all approach with 96 gallon containers is not manageable for many households.  You can now request other sizes that will be swapped out beginning November 1.

    Available are:
        -  64 gallon containers (29 pounds empty)  41" x 21" x 27"
        -  30 gallon containers (19 pounds empty)  37" x 19" x 24"
        -  18 Gallon bins similar to ones we now have

The City recommends the 64 gallon containers for biweekly collection from 1-2 person households.  The 30 gallon size and 18 gallon bins are available for those with difficulty carrying heavy loads and negotiating steps.

Your old bins will not be used for collection because they are not equpped with tags that identify each household for the recycling points program and can be read electronically.  Feel free to use them to carry smaller amounts of recycle to your new container - or for other personal storage.

To place an order to swap out your 96 gallon container, call 352-5332.

More info on the Recyclying program is available at www.cincinnati-oh.gov/recycling/
