March 2010 CTCC Meeting Minutes
Police Report - Officer Germaine Love * Copper prices are up, so thefts from vacant houses are up as well. * One common scam to watch out for: individuals go door to door and ask about performing some
kind of work. If no one answers, they look for a point of entry to break in. * Five of eight break-in's in the past month could not be considered "breaking & entering" crimes because thieves entered through UNLOCKED windows and doors. This is easy to correct. LOCK UP!! * If you see suspicious activity (eg. someone looking in windows) call for the Police at 765-1212.
Proposal for a Columbia Tusculum "City-orama"
* Strafer St. developer, Gary Osterfeld introduced a proposal for a "City-orama" here to be put on by the homebuilders' association. To follow through, they need the support of the local area. * Columbia-Tusculum (Strafer St, specifically) has been suggested as a site for a summer or fall 2011 event because of the level of new construction activity in our area. * CTCC passed a motion to send a letter of support for holding a City-orama here. 2010 Spending Plans * Neighborhood Support Program projects were approved as presented in January. These include Communications (e-Newsletter subscription service, Website domain renewal and annual hosting service), Beautification (building pergolas around the public benches at Columbia Square & buying a portable water tank for landscaping with no water tap access), Home Tour advance money and funds to stage the Mural Dedication fundraiser.
* Funds from the general treasury were also approved: * $1000 for contractors (with required insurance) to hang banners. * $ 600 for Hamilton County Adult Probation team to mow the lawn at the gateway sign park. * $ Up to 200 on a matching basis for the Business Association to print posters advertising member businesses. |

Mural Dedication AND Local Beautification and Community Garden Fundraising Event
Preperation off the overpass at the intersections on Delta Avenue and Eastern Avenue for the mural has begun. The remaining schedule is as follows:
-Wall Preperation - April 16th
-Fabric (Mural) Installation - April 19-20th
Note: There will be some lane closures during that time, so be aware and drive carefully.
The mural dedication is scheduled for May 6th, Thursday from 5:00 to 10:00, at Tostado's. We plan to honor Pam Kravetz, local main artist for the mural, the student artists, Artworks, and others for their assistance in making this mural happen.
The official dedication portion of the night will be completed by 5:30. We know many of you can't make it until after work, so we are extended the mural celebration into the evening and combining it with a fundraiser for local beautification and for the community garden.
We plan to use some of the funds raised for planters and flowers in the neighborhood and to pay for watering. We also plan to build pergolas over the benches in Columbia Square and plant flowing vines.
The community garden is on Strader Street, off of Riverside Drive, a few blocks west of Riverview East Academy. Joe Corcoran, a veteran in the area, has managed this garden for years and has been expanding it on his own for the community. The intention is to make flood zone property near the river into community gardens, that will provide jobs for neighborhood kids and local veterans. Fundraising will help pay for: soil, fill, chainsaw blades, gas, oil, grass seed, drill bits, round-up, rental and maintenance of equipment, and a neighborhood barbeque.
For $25, we will provide food, drink, and live music. Cindy Matyi, CT resident, and her group, Silver Arm, will play from 5:30 - 7:00, followed by Frankly Speaking, some of whose members are also CT residents. A fire truck will be on hand for families to explore. Vintage cars will be provided by the Ault Park Tour d' Elegance.
A great celebration, cause, and way to spend time with your neighbors! |
April 17th, 9:00 to 12:00 we will be mulching the Columbia Tusculum Gateway Garden. As you enter CT from the west on Columbia Parkway, it is on the north side before the intersection with Tusculum.
We welcome all who are able to join and make it a community event. Get to know you neighbors,
take pride in your neighborhood, and beautify it at the same time.
Bring a shovel or a rake.
And come on, who doesn't like a mimosa?
We want to thank H. Hafner & Sons for donating the mulch and the use of a dumpster for disposing of tree limbs and other debris. Hafners has continued to support our community through the years and we encourage you to support them as well.

Fencing Around Columbia Square Lot
This fence is related to MSD's sewer project. This Columbia Square outlot will be used to tunnel a workshaft all the way to a workshaft well up Hoge St. MSD intends to build ingress and egress points over the sidewalk, directly from the Parkway. They will be trucking away a lot of tunneled material from the workshaft on this outlot.
The schedule shows MSD completing this phase in December 2010. This revised construction plan will make for less negative impacts, both on Columbia Square and on the surrounding neighborhood. In particular, they will not be using the workshaft located behind the Green Dog Cafe outdoor seating area, which will be removed early in the project. And the workshaft that was going to be in the middle of the road at Allyn's corner of Hoge St has now been reduced to a man hole, so the disruption/obstruction of traffic on Hoge St should be much less than initially thought. |
Cyrano [Rehearsed] closes out New Edgecliff's 2009-2010 Season
Be prepared for everything you never expected! As our cast begins rehearsal for the world premiere of Reservoir Dogs: The Musical, a slight change in plans occurs. Suddenly, they find themselves immersed in Rostand's classic tale of the large-nosed romantic.
New Edgecliff Theatre presents its unique twist on the well-known tale by Edmond Rostand: Cyrano, France's greatest warrior and poet, is in love with the beautiful Roxanne. His legendary large nose, however, causes him to doubt that he could ever win her love. Instead, he courts her by proxy, through the handsome, yet vapid, Christian. Cyrano is a funny and touching story filled with swordfights and romance, brimming with Rostand's beautiful poetry.
It's a night of theatre you'll be talking about for a long time...

Inviting You To Build a Citizens' Budget For The City
Every two years the City establishes a budget drafted by City Administration and tweaked by City Council. Citizens generally have a limited opportunity only at the very end of the process to voice their concerns and advocate for their priorities. With deficits continuing to grow, it's much more critical for citizens to have a greater role in establishing city priorities.
Consequently, with the blessing of City Council and the administration, a diverse coalition of civic groups is working to bring deliberative citizen input to the beginning of the 2011-2012 biennial budget debate. The coalition is organized by Citizens for Civic Renewal and includes, among others, Invest in Neighborhoods, the League of Women Voters, A.I.R. Inc., the Faith Community Alliance, Santa Maria, the Community Building Institute, the Women's City Club, and the Cincinnatus Association.
The citizen dialog will be grounded in real choices, as the City Administration has agreed to create budget-cutting (and revenue-raising) options for consideration by citizens. In turn, citizens will be asked to discuss and agree upon options in an attempt to balance the budget. Such deliberation will help citizens 1) understand the competing community needs from the perspective of other citizens, 2) prioritize the City services that mean the most to them, and 3) learn to find common ground to resolve our community's fiscal challenges.
Four meetings across the City this spring will establish priorities for City Council to weigh as they draft their "policy budget" in June. That policy budget is used by the administration to craft the City Manager's budget that is presented to the Mayor shortly before Thanksgiving.
This process aims to transform the way citizens think and talk about the City budget. Rather than merely "protecting our own," we all must begin to see the City budget as a collective effort. Consequently, this process will use self-contained small group deliberation to ensure that every citizen has a chance to speak, be heard, and weigh priorities. If citizens begin listening to each other before offering opinions to Council, we might be able to build consensus on how to meet our City's diverse needs.
Neighborhood meetings have been set for April 26 at the Madisonville Recreation Center, April 28 at the Avondale Pride Center (tentative), and May 5 at Midway School in Westwood. A final city-wide meeting will be conducted Saturday June 5 at the Cintas Center. More information will be available as the first meeting nears. |

Coyotes - Coyotes - Coyotes Generally coyotes are not out and about during the day, and are shy animals. At this time the Cincinnati Park Board is not managing for (or against) having coyotes in our parks. The coyotes have expanded their range eastward and are now in all 88 counties in Ohio. If one is seen out in the daytime, it must be getting used to humans or identifying the area with a source of food.
Research indicates that the primary danger to people occurs when they feed the coyotes and the animals become too acclimated to people, which could result in someone getting bit. If a coyote approaches you or your pet hold your ground and make lots of noise; make yourself appear large and aggressive, even throw things at the animal. Do not run towards the coyote or do anything to corner or injure it. Report any aggressive animal behavior to police and to Cincinnati Parks Land Manager, Jim Godby at 513-861-9070.
