2010 CTCC City of Cincinnati Funding

CTCC Grant proposals
This is the time of year to develop proposals for 2010.  All Columbia Tusculum residents and property owners can recommend and vote on projects; they do not need to be CTCC voting members.

CTCC will receive $5,000 for 2010 council operating costs (NSP).  Examples of past operating costs are publishing The Columbia e-Journal, website maintenance, rental of a storage facility, and maintaining a P.O. Box for council mail.  These monies have also been used for maintaining our gateway and pocket parks, paying water bills to keep these looking good, supplying mutt mitt stations, banners, etc.

The Neighborhood Business District Support Funds (NBDSF) are earmarked for improving defined business districts.  CT's neighborhood business district is from Columbia Parkway to Eastern Avenue, between Delta Avenue and Stanley Avenue.  In 2009 we used a portion of this money to beautify our greenspaces and fund the mural, to be installed in April 2010 on the railroad overpass where Delta Avenue meets Eastern Avenue.  NBDSF funding for 2010 is $2,000.

2010 recommendations
Some projects and operating costs are ongoing, and will need to be renewed, such as beautification, funds for the newsletter and the revised website, and insurance.  Seed money will also be needed as we plan to have a 2010 Columbia Tusculum Historic Home Tour (see the article below).

At the February 15th council meeting we will vote on a final proposal and in March the final proposals will be reviewed for approval by the City and previously mentioned peer groups.

GREENER STOCK is Teaming up with Global Environmental Services to Offer Safe and Secure Home Electronics Recycling

On Saturday, March 13 from 11 AM until 2 PM, Greener Stock will host a community electronics drive in partnership with Global Environmental Services, a Georgetown, Kentucky electronics recycler.  Eligible items include computers and printers, audio and video equipment including speakers, gaming consoles, and cell phones.  During the drive, all items will be free to drop-off except for computer monitors and some televisions, which will be assessed a $5 fee.  The event will be held at Greener Stock, which is located at 3528 Columbia Parkway in Columbia Tusculum.

Global Environmental Services is one of only 34 e-recyclers in the world that is e-Stewardship Certified.  If reuse of parts is not feasible, then every item is broken down, and the original parts are returned back to the manufacturing stream.  E-stewardship certification ensures that parts are not sent to the landfill or exported to third world countries for dumping.  Because GES believes in providing its clients with the highest level of security, they only outsource its labor to facilities that can be randomly audited.

Greener Stock LogoGreener Stock is a local company committed to providing building materials, design services, and resources to people in the greater Cincinnati area to create earth-friendly and healthy interior environments.

Burglaries in District 2

District two is still experiencing a high volume of Burglaries to vacant and occuppied residences.  These offenses are occurring all hours of the day and are widespread throughout our district.  The police department is requesting that all homeowners document all their serial numbers on all relevant property. This helps track stolen property and is helpful for insurance purposes. Property taken include: laptops, flatscreen tvs, playstations and jewelery. If a person has an unique piece of jewelry it would also be helpful to take pictures of these for your records.  If neighbors will be extra watchful of each other and report anything that does not look quite right this helps the investigators immenesly.  If you would like a security survey of your home do not hesitate to call District 2 at 979-4400 and request to speak with your neighborhood liason officer.

Beacon Foods Fire

The following was released on February 4th, through the Mt. Lookout Community Council website.  Many of you have probably frequented the Beacon location in Mt Lookout Square and we wanted to share this with you.

"This past week has been extremely difficult.  Most of you probably know that our Delta Store caught on fire this past Thursday, January 28, 2010.  It is a total loss.  We are not sure if, or when, we will be able to reopen the Delta Store.  Further, we are not sure of the total impact that this loss will have on our other two stores given the extremely difficult economy that we are all facing."

"We would like to thank all of you who have stopped in and offered prayers and words of encouragement.  Many people have asked us if there is anything that they can do to help.  Clearly, the thing that will help us the most is for people to shop at our other two stores.  We do not expect that people will use Beacon Food Mart to replace Kroger.  However, we do believe that we have a great deal to offer the community.  We certainly appreciate your business.  We will keep you posted from time to time on our plans for the Stores."

Sincerely,

Steve and Marcia Elliott

Keller Williams relocates to historic Columbia Tusculum neighborhood

On January 26, 2010 members of The City of Cincinnati Department of Community Development, Mayor Mark Mallory, City Manager Milton Dohoney, and Al Neyer Inc. representatives were on hand to celebrate the first major tenant to locate in the One Columbia Square Office building--Keller Williams Realty.
The following is an article from Soapbox, detailing Keller Willams move.

Soapbox, 2/2/2010

Keller Williams Realty made the decision to relocate their realty group to Cincinnati's historic Columbia Tusculum neighborhood in late 2009.  Since that time the company has reportedly outpaced other local markets by 30 percent.

Columbia Square One

The relocation brings Keller Williams Realty to Columbia Square which was developed by Cincinnati-based Al Neyer Inc.  The mixed-use development features 30,000 square feet of retail space, restaurants, and 43,000 square feet of Class A office space that includes 30 executive parking spaces on the first floor of the four story structure.

"When the City partnered with Al Neyer Inc. to develop this project, we were hoping to be able to attract office tenants like Keller Williams Real Estate," said City Manager Milton Dohoney.

The realty group has leased 5,600 square feet of space and becomes the office building's first major tenant.  Inside, the Keller Williams Realty space serves as the home base for 104 agents and 22 permanent agents with dedicated office space.  The new space also serves as a training center for all of Keller Williams Realty's agents in the Cincinnati area.

The City of Cincinnati helped make major improvements, that included new streetscaping, to Columbia Parkway and Delta Avenue when Columbia Square was developed in 2005.  Additionally, the City maintains ownership of the surface parking lot in the center of the development that serves as parking for not only the Columbia Square development, but also the entire Columbia Tusculum business district.

"We can now see the mixed-use development concept at work, with Keller Williams' 104 real estate professionals supporting the restaurants, fitness facilities, and other service businesses both in Columbia Square and in the surrounding business district," said Dohoney.

The City of Cincinnati will begin distributing new larger recycling carts this May as part of the city's enhanced recycling program.  Distribution will occur in four phases and will eventually include carts at 104,000 households in Cincinnati.

The new recycling carts are touted as having several benefits over the existing 18 gallon bins used now.  The new carts will be offered in 18, 35, 64 and 96 gallon sizes, but will primarily be the larger ones according to Office of Environmental Quality Director Larry Falkin.

A New Plan for Preservation

Cincinnati Preservation Association (CPA), the Over-the-Rhine Foundation (OTRF), and Centripetus will make the second public presentation of a commonsense, holistic proposal to make preservation work better in all of Cincinnati's neighborhoods.  It will take place in Columbia Tusculum on Wednesday, February 17, at 6:00 p.m. at the Junior League Headquarters, 3500 Columbia Parkway.

Please come and hear the new and exciting changes that are happening behind City Council's door that will affect preservation in every one of Cincinnati's neighborhoods.  The OTRF and CPA presented an overview of this plan to City Council's Vibrant Neighborhoods Committee in several working sessions during the summer and fall of 2009. Since then, some of the recommendations of the proposal have been adopted by City Council, and the City has formed a committee to review the policy recommendations.
