October CTCC Meeting Notes

-Auto thefts continue to be our most frequent type of crime.
The summer "serial burglar" was caught, but unfortunately received only a criminal trespassing charge.

-Lee Ann Werner, Bruegger's Area Manager, and her staff, provided Bruegger sandwiches and treats.  Bruegger's has fundraising programs available for schools and other nonprofit organizations.  Contact Bruegger's for details.

-A valuable discussion for our residents clarifyied details of Issue 9 and how the proposed charter amendment would work.

-CTCC will hold elections for their 2010 Steering Team at the November meeting.  Three positions
(Secretary and two Directors) are open.  Contact Arlene if you are interested in one of these.

-City Planning will present proposed a zoning change for the McKinley School property at the November Council meeting.  New Owners, The Irish Heritage Center, are considered a cultural organization.  This is technically not permitted under the current "limited manufacturing" zoning.  City Planning will review with us two possible zoning designations which are consistent with the rest of Eastern Ave going west to Delta Ave.  These are  CC-M or Commercial Community - Mix (south side of Eastern) and CN-P or Commercial Neighborhood - Pedestrian (north side of Eastern). City Planning will explain these and seek our agreement with a proposed change.  The proposal next goes to the City Planning Commission on December 4 for approval, followed by final approval through City Council.
CTCC Focus Area - Promoting Business Development

Our community has pursued business development by forming a business association.  The second meeting was held at Allyn's on October 26th.  Discussion centered around reaching out to our residents with a mailing to inform them of what businesses are here and to offer incentives to promote shopping locally.  The next meeting is on November 30th, 6:00 pm at Allyn's.

The application for funding of the Columbia Square Art Project, through the Neighborhood Business District Improvemnt Program, was not approved.  This is still a worthy project and an example of the efforts made to support our Columbia Tusculum business district.  Fundraising efforts will continue, through resident donations, social fundraising events, and other grant proposals.  More to follow.  If you are interested in this project, contact Matt Ackermann at mackermann@fuse.net or 503-4004.

Citizens on Patrol Training

The Cincinnati Police Department's Citizens on Patrol (COP) Program announced that there will be a volunteer training session over the weekend of December 12 & 13th. This special weekend training session will consist of a two-day program running from 9am to 4:30 pm both days. It will take place at the Cincinnati Police Academy, in Lower Price Hill. Once completed, volunteers will then be able to join one of the many active units throughout the city.

COP members patrol their neighborhoods, acting as the eyes and ears of the police by concentrating around problem areas and helping increase visibility. In fact, the mere presence of COP units helps deter crime and increase police visibility to the general public. There is no cost to participate and all citizens are encouraged to apply. The deadline for application is December 5th. This is only done a couple of times a year, so if you are interested, now is the time.

The Columbia Tusculum neighborhood falls under the Lunken COP and our contact is Jack Karsh.  Please contact Jack if you are interested.  His e-mail is: jwkmjkotl1@netzero.com.  You can also call 513-352-3533 for more information or to apply.
Columbia Parkway Scenic View Study

The City of Cincinnati has conducted a scenic view study of Columbia Parkway/River Road.  The report Recommendations state, "There are three measures the City may consider in a strategic effort to enhance the scenic quality of Columbia Parkway/River Road.  Ideally, all three could be implemented simultaneously as part of comprehensive planning efforts.  These include zoning measures, histroic designation and scenic byway status (including vegetation management.)

Energy Allies - excerpted from Soapbox Cincinnati by By: Feoshia Henderson, 10/27/2009

Many manufacturers and professional service providers are starting to make a change in doing what they do best - making and selling things. But instead of catering exclusively to more traditional manufacturing needs, like the once powerful auto industry, a group of local innovators are getting creative by breaking into the energy efficiency sector.

The Greater Cincinnati Energy Alliance  is working to provide leadership in educating consumers, workers and government leaders on the dollars and sense it makes to embrace energy efficiency-related work and policies in this emerging, global eco-conscious era.

"The big notion we want to really rally the business and larger community around is the idea that energy efficiency is an economic driver," said Andy Holzhauser, Energy Alliance Executive Director.

Parkside Church Holiday Toy Giveaway

We've all heard that it is better to give than to receive.  How much better is it to help someone else so they can give?

Right in our neighborhood are a number of people who struggle to put food on the table and a roof over their heads.  For them the added costs of holiday celebrations make this time of year more of a struggle than a time to celebrate.  This year more families than ever are in need.  We meet them each week at the Parkside Outreach on Eastern Avenue.

For the last several years Parkside has distributed new toys to needy parents so they can provide Christmas gifts for their children.  This year, for the first time, we'll be able to distribute the toys much closer to home.  In order to do this, we need you.

On the morning of Saturday, December 5th, we'll open the doors of LeBlond Recreation Center at 2335 Riverside Drive and welcome parents in to "shop" for toys for their kids.  We need people greeting folks, making sure that they're registered and most importantly helping them to shop.  (Parkside volunteers have done this for several years, and they will be on hand to show us the ropes.)  Volunteers will need to be at LeBlond at 10:00 am on the 5th and can expect to be home by 1:00 pm.  Hot drinks and snacks will be provided.  If you can volunteer, please contact George at gfrank@visitparkside.com

Of course, we'll also need toys to distribute.  NEW toys for boys and girls aged 0-14 can be dropped off up until November 29 at LeBlond Rec Center throughout the week or during Parkside's service there on Sunday mornings at 10:00 am.

For more information, you can go to www.visitparkside.com/toys or email gfrank@visitparkside.com.
RVE Open Air Environmental Classroom & Garden

Riverview East Academy dedicated their new Open Air Environmental Classroom & Garden on November 7.  This community garden is the result of an United Way Agency "Extreme Makeover" competition, where team of volunteers address an issue and implement a plan to solve the problem.

The project is at the foot of Delta Ave., opposite the school bus turnaround.  It transformed an overgrown area near the school which was unsafe and unuseable, into an area that provides learning opportunities, increases safety, and fosters pride among the students and members of the community.

The project stems from Riverview East being named the lead environmental education school for Cincinnati Public Schools, and from the successful Veteran's Memorial Garden and Urban Orchard, two blocks away.  Empty City lots between the Veteran's Garden and the school were obtained on a lease basis for the new garden.

The new Environmental Classroom and Garden includes: an open air shelter with seating to be used as an outdoor classroom, neighborhood market or school concession stand, a Rain barrel watering system, Solar night lights, and Planter boxes to be filled with flowers, vegetables and fruit trees.

Thanks to the UW volunteers from Ethicon Endo Surgery and the CIvic Garden Center for taking the lead on the project. Columbia Tusculum Community Council donated $500 for project materials.
Thank You and Farewell to Patricia Tiggs

Patricia Tiggs is leaving as the Resource Coordinator for the Riverview East Community Learning Center.  Her last day was this past week. We appreciate all of Patrice's efforts in being our RVE host for community council meetings. From that relationship, we grew closer to the school and it's activities, and were able to contribute to several school programs this year.

Thank you Patricia for being a wonderful resource for our community!  We wish you and your family good health and happiness.
Coyotes in Our Midst

A coyote has been spotted twice near Stanley and Vineyard Place.  Coyotes can adapt easily to various environments, eat small rodents, trash, and have killed small pets.  On rare occasions, they have become aggressive towards humans.  Do not feed them.  Be aware of their presence and act accordingly.
