It's October and the weather has cooled, the days are getting shorter, and the leaves have started to turn red, yellow and orange. Blue Wing Olives, Dun Caddis, and midges are hatching on the streams and the trout are looking up. Fall fishing is here!

We've been exceptionally busy over the past month, and not just guiding! We'll clue you in on everything that's been going on with us here at R&R Fly Fishing plus tell you everything you need to know about finding great fishing this fall.

We Net a Keeper!

Boone Roper Rutter

The R&R family has grown by one! Boone Roper Rutter was born on September 11 and kept us hopping since then. He's already been on a few short fishing and hiking excursions at Tremont and Elkmont in the Smokies.

His four year old sister Willow has already taken countless fishing trips and caught rainbows, browns, and brookies. She's even been to the Rockies 3 times.

We're looking forward to bringing Boone up in the great outdoors. A couple of folks have even noted that his initials, BRR, are appropriate for someone who will grow up around cold water.
A Trip Back in Time

We recently found this video clip that contains film of the Smokies from 1928, before the formation of the national park. Look for the rural area in the shadow of Mount LeConte that would grow into what we now know as Gatlinburg. Interestingly enough, the only way to Townsend or Elkmont at that time was by train.

Be patient and wait until the end of the clip. You'll see what are probably some of the first rainbow trout stocked in the Great Smoky Mountains.

Madison River, Yellowstone Park

Every year we host one or more groups in Yellowstone country. We didn't put anything together this year since our son was due to arrive the same week we usually leave for the trip.

Charity encouraged me to take a quick solo trip to Yellowstone. I was able to arrange a camping trip with fellow fly fishing business ally Craig Langer of Portland, Oregon. We spent 6 days fishing around Yellowstone, most of which was in relatively remote, off trail locations.

Even though we have a busy season of guiding there are still some dates available.

This is one of the best times of the year for fly fishing in the Smokies. The weather is great, the fish are rising, and the fall colors are beautiful. October is one of our busiest months, but November typically fishes well up to about Thanksgiving.

We'll start floating the Tuckaseegee River in western North Carolina about the second week of October. This river fishes well all through the fall into the winter.

Our New Books Are Now Available
Fly Fishing for Brook Trout - Advice from the Guides
Fly Fishing with Streamers - Advice from the Guides

We have started a new series of pocket size books that we have titled "Advice from the Guides". The first covers brook trout in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Most of the streams were recently opened and not included in Angler's Companion, Ian's previous guide to the Smokies.

Fly Fishing with Streamers is a great book to understand streamer strategies. Streamers will often catch larger trout that nymph of dry flies, but the methods are often misunderstood. This book explains streamer methods in clear with easy to understand language and illustrations contributed by Atlanta artist Paul Puckett
