We've hit the hottest part of the summer, but unlike the past couple of years we've had ideal conditions. In fact, June and July weren't really summer like. There were a number of days when temperatures remained in the 70's and even a few cool nights when it got down into the 30's on the highest peaks in the Smokies.

LIttle River near Elkmont

Abundant rainfall has the streams at the best levels we've seen in several years. Higher elevation streams fish the best in August, but we've spent more time than usual on Little River since it's been fishing so good.

We're at that time of year when tailwater fishing is day to day on the Clinch and Holston Rivers. Some days there are good generation schedules and the rivers are too high on others. All the rainfall has the local reservoirs full and TVA will begin to draw them down. The Clinch will have good schedules on the weekends through the fall.

We're still floating the Pigeon River for smallmouth bass and hooking most of the fish on poppers. We've also waded Little River downstream of Townsend as well as lower Abrams Creek and caught some nice smallies. Water levels in Little River have also been good for floats this summer.

Brook Trout Restored to Lynn Camp Prong in Great Smoky Mountains National Park

The most ambitious brook trout restoration to date has taken place in the Smokies. The project is not complete, but brookies are swimming in this stream again.

Ian & Charity Rutter

We've already  booked some trips for October. This is one of the best times of the year for fly fishing in the Smokies. The weather is great, the fish are rising, and the fall colors are beautiful. October is one of our busiest months, but November typically fishes well up to about Thanksgiving.

We'll start floating the Tuckaseegee River in western North Carolina about the second week of October. This river fishes well all through the fall into the winter.

Our New Books Are Now Available
Fly Fishing for Brook Trout - Advice from the Guides
Fly Fishing with Streamers - Advice from the Guides

We have started a new series of pocket size books that we have titled "Advice from the Guides". The first covers brook trout in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Most of the streams were recently opened and not included in Angler's Companion, Ian's previous guide to the Smokies.

Fly Fishing with Streamers is a great book to understand streamer strategies. Streamers will often catch larger trout that nymph of dry flies, but the methods are often misunderstood. This book explains streamer methods in clear with easy to understand language and illustrations contributed by Atlanta artist Paul Puckett
