The weather has been cold and the water is icy. Cold weather of the past few days has kept the rivers and streams in the deep freeze. Water temperatures have been right at 32 degrees and a skim of ice covers most of the big pools.
Deer graze in Cades Cove near Abrams Creek
Abrams Creek in Cades Cove is the best place to fish right now. Most of the water in the stream comes from springs and the water is always 40 degrees or warmer. There's no point in hiking too far downstream from the trailhead. Cold water that enters from Mill Creek cools the creek so the best water is upstream of there.
The Clinch River has been generating nonstop and there's no end in sight, so we're not sure when that will be fishable. The Holston has a few windows for good fishing, but it's uncertain if this will last. The South Holston and Watauga have the best generation schedules for fishing right now.

The Secret to Catching More Fish: Treat Your Rod As If It Were A Gun
|

One of the most common things we do as fly fishing guides is try to change the way our anglers approach fishing. Most of the fly fishers we take fishing are already proficient casters, have nice tackle, and have the right flies. It's the thought process behind the fishing that catches the fish.
I had a good conversation with several other fishermen over the campfire at Hazel Creek last October on this very subject. Many fisherman blow their chances at catching fish before the fly is where the fish will eat. What's the secret to success wherever you go fishing? Treat your fly rod as if it were a gun.
