FALL AUTHOR'S VISIT
For the past two years it has been our privilege to host visiting authors from around the country. Mrs. Faye Gibbons, a writer of children's picture books and young adult novels that focus on life in the rural South was our first official visiting author. Mrs. Gibbon's specialty is children's literature, and ECCS students enjoyed learning about the writing and publishing process as well as listening to Mrs. Gibbons read such great stories as Mamma and Me and the Model T, Mountain Wedding, and The Day the Picture Man Came. Last year's visiting author was Mr. Eric Metaxes, author of the New York Times #1 bestseller, Bonhoeffer:  Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, which was recently named  "Book of the Year" by the ECPA, Amazing Grace, Squanto, and other great books.
In keeping with these impressive authors, at 1:00 p.m. on October 24th ECCS will host Mrs. Jennifer Pharr Davis, author of Becoming Odyssa~Epic Adventures on the Appalachian Trail. In 2008 Mrs. Davis became the fastest person to hike the Appalachian Trail, averaging thirty-eight miles a day and completing the 2,175 mile trail in fifty-seven days. She will share her adventures and challenges with ECCS students and parents as well as tell how her relationship with Christ sustained her.
Everyone is invited! Davis

PRAYERS CONTINUE FOR MRS. PETERSEN
Thank you for your prayers for Mrs. Petersen and her family. God has graciously answered them as evidenced by Mara's quick recovery and release from the hospital. She is now resting at home and looking forward to spending quality time with her family.
Many of you have signed up to provide meals for the Petersens. Additionally, their church, Trinity Presbyterian, has started a love offering for the Petersen family.  If you are interested in making a financial donation, checks (with "Petersen" in the memo) may be mailed to:

PARENT VOLUNTEER NEEDED
We look forward to the upcoming celebration of Veteran's Day on Friday, November 11th.  We are looking for a parent to organize the morning program (we already have the special speaker arranged) to recognize and appreciate all who have and are serving our country.

SNOWBALL RUN MEETING
Interested parents and supporters, please join the Snowball Run committee next Tuesday, October 25th at 7:00p.m. in Room 224.  Contact Lee Russell at leeamyrussell@bellsouth.net for more information.

MORNING CAR-DOOR OPENERS
If you are looking for a quick and easy way to minister to ECCS students, you may be interested in assisting students as they arrive in car-line each morning. As they unload backpacks, lunch boxes, jackets, projects, and sometimes other interesting items, it is so nice to have someone open the door and help them with their load. All it takes is a smile, a helping hand, and a warm greeting! If interested, just choose a cone between 7:40-8:00 each morning and begin blessing both students and parents! Thanks!

SCRIP NEWS
Get ready for the new Scrip Contest!  Starting November 1st and continuing to December 1st, there will be 3 prizes for the top Scrip purchasers!  1st Prize is a $100 gift card, 2nd Prize is a $50 gift card and 3rd Prize is a $25 gift card...OF YOUR CHOICE!  Just in time for Christmas shopping!  Also, if your business likes to give company bonuses during Christmas, consider giving scrip.  If you want a denomination larger than what is offered, let me know.  The scrip company says some retailers will work with us for specific large amounts.  The key is to plan ahead and talk to your Scrip Coordinator, Donnalee Blankenship at BrandonDonnalee@yahoo.com.

Logic & Rhetoric School Updates

The White Thread Now Available

Mrs. Ballstadt's long-awaited book is now available on Kindle in e-book form and from www.createspace.com/3661002 in hard copy. It will be about a week before it is available for purchase on Amazon. The book is already getting rave reviews from the students and parents who have read it. We are so grateful to have such a wonderful author on our faculty and hope everyone will get a copy of the book.  Also, once you read it, please post your reviews on Amazon.  Let's spread the word about this great series of books!

Calling Girl Basketball Players

Girls in grades 7-12 who are interested in playing basketball for ECS need to contact Coach Letson at kennethletson@yahoo.com or 335-5365. Practice for the season has started, but we are still in need of players, so there is still time to sign up.

Socks for Soldiers

ECCS L & R Students will be participating in the Socks for Soldiers drive now through Veteran's Day on November 11. Any students who can are asked to donate a multi-pack of men's white crew socks. These socks will be sent to our soldiers on active duty.  We hope to have, like last year, a good number of socks to donate to this important cause.

NJCL UPDATES

The NJCL is a vital, active club on campus for all students in grades 6-12 to enjoy.  Not only is our NJCL chapter hosting  the state convention this year, but our officers have also been working hard since back in the summer to arrange fun activities that promote fellowship and celebration of our love of the antiquities.  Here are some upcoming events that you might enjoy with the NJCL:

November 5:

For all new and returning NJCL members, the annual NJCL initiation ceremony has been reschedule to November 5th at Joe Tucker Park in Helena. The costume theme this year is "The Trojan War" chosen to correspond with the spring convention theme.  The time has not been set yet--listen to the morning announcements for further details from the NJCL officers.

April 13-14:

For all NJCL members: Alabama Junior Classical League's 57th annual state convention at Samford University (hosted by ECCS!).  As every year, there will be costs involved with attending (TBD), so start saving your money if you wish to attend the Convention this year.  We hope to have the strongest contingent at this year's convention!

Has your student made a difference by volunteering in the last year?

Each year, Prudential and the National Association of Secondary School Principals present the Spirit of Community Awards. Any 5th through 12th grader who has volunteered in their communities since September 1, 2010, is eligible. State honorees receive $1,000, a medallion and an all-expense-paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington D.C., in May, 2012, for recognition events.

Applications must be completed online by November 1, 2011. For more information and to apply, go to www.spirit.prudential.com or contact Mrs. Kristi Blackwell at kblackwell@evangelclassical.org.

ACT TESTING

Sophomores are all strongly encouraged to take the ACT on or before the June, 2012 date.  All juniors should be actively working toward obtaining the ACT score they desire, with a goal of having it accomplished by the summer of 2012.  Seniors, there is still time at some of the schools to which you applied to get a score high enough to achieve the next scholarship level.  Check out all the test dates and registration deadlines at www.act.org.  When you sign up, remember our school code is 010-028.

Evangel Mother's Day Out & Preschool

Mother's Day Out will be sponsoring an Usborne Book Fair on October the 26th and 27th.  Come and see these beautiful books and get an early start to your Christmas shopping.
