FALL BREAK MARKS END OF FIRST QUARTER
School was out for FALL BREAK on October 7-11th, marking the end of our first quarter of school. We hope each of you had a fun and restful few days enjoying a break from academics and the perfect fall weather. Report cards will go home on Friday, October 14th. FALL AUTHOR'S VISIT For the past two years it has been our privilege to host visiting authors from around the country. Mrs. Faye Gibbons, a writer of children's picture books and young adult novels that focus on life in the rural South was our first official visiting author. Mrs. Gibbon's specialty is children's literature, and ECCS students enjoyed learning about the writing and publishing process as well as listening to Mrs. Gibbons read such great stories as Mamma and Me and the Model T, Mountain Wedding, and The Day the Picture Man Came. Last year's visiting author was Mr. Eric Metaxes, author of the New York Times #1 bestseller, Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy, which was recently named "Book of the Year" by the ECPA, Amazing Grace, Squanto, and other great books. In keeping with these impressive authors, at 1:00 p.m. on October 24th ECCS will host Mrs. Jennifer Pharr Davis, author of Becoming Odyssa~Epic Adventures on the Appalachian Trail. In 2008 Mrs. Davis became the fastest person to hike the Appalachian Trail, averaging thirty-eight miles a day and completing the 2,175 mile trail in fifty-seven days. She will share her adventures and challenges with ECCS students and parents as well as tell how her relationship with Christ sustained her. Everyone is invited! PRAYERS CONTINUE FOR MRS. PETERSEN We stand amazed at our mighty God as we hear of the many miracles He has performed on behalf of the Petersen family! We are so very thankful for the most recent positive report that Mara is awake and talking--even asking her doctor when she can return to work! Many of you have asked how you can help the family. An opportunity for you to assist with meals is now available. Below is information for the CareCalendar site for Mara. October is up for now and November will be added soon. Meals can be delivered during the day if someone is at home, but a specific time is given since the carecalendar requires that a time be listed. The HELPER log-on is used by family and friends that would like to sign-up to help a loved one. To access Peterson Family's personal CareCalendar site, visit http://www.carecalendar.org/logon/89896 and enter the following information in the appropriate spaces: CALENDAR ID : 89896 SECURITY CODE : 4884

Math Team Update
| The math team is rocking along and the kids are doing a great job during practices. I've had several parents stop me to say that their child's math scores have been positively affected in the classroom by the added instruction from Coach Carr. She's been such a blessing to these kids and there is no doubt that they are excited about learning math and being a member of the ECCS Math Team. Below you will find a copy of the 2011 - 2012 Tournament Schedule. It is our hope and desire to build a competitive team that will represent our school well academically and with great sportsmanship at area tournaments. Students may join at any time and students who are not able to attend practices are still invited to attend tournaments with the team, provided they pick up a practice test two weeks prior to the tournament so they are prepared for the type of questions they will face at the tournaments. Most tournaments are open to students in grades 6 - 12.
2011- 2012 Math Team Tournament Schedule:
Muscle Shoals Middle School - 11/5 Vestavia Hills High School - 12/10 Alabama School of Fine Arts - 1/14 Pizitz Middle School - 2/25 Berry/ Simmons Middle School - 4/7
Randolph 4/21 Huntsville
Thank you for your support,

NJCL UPDATES
The NJCL is a vital, active club on campus for all students in grades 6-12 to enjoy. Not only is our NJCL chapter hosting the state convention this year, but our officers have also been working hard since back in the summer to arrange fun activities that promote fellowship and celebration of our love of the antiquities. Here are some upcoming events that you might enjoy with the NJCL:
October 13th: For older students: "Watching The Fighters:Exploring Roman Fascination with Gladiatorial Combat" a lecture by Dr.Garrett Fagan, Penn State University, at Samford University, 7:30 pm. Dr. Fagan's remarks will come from his recent book "The Lure of the Arena: Social Psychology and the Crowd at the Roman Games."
October 22nd:
For all new and returning NJCL members: Annual initiation ceremony and party (place & time TBA). The costume theme this year is "The Trojan War" chosen to correspond with the spring convention theme.
April 13-14:
For all NJCL members: Alabama Junior Classical League's 57th annual state convention at Samford University (hosted by ECCS!). As every year, there will be costs involved with attending (TBD), so start saving your money if you wish to attend the Convention this year. We hope to have the strongest contingent at this year's convention!
Has your student made a difference by volunteering in the last year?
Each year, Prudential and the National Association of Secondary School Principals present the Spirit of Community Awards. Any 5th through 12th grader who has volunteered in their communities since September 1, 2010, is eligible. State honorees receive $1,000, a medallion and an all-expense-paid trip with a parent or guardian to Washington D.C., in May, 2012, for recognition events.
Applications must be completed online by November 1, 2011. For more information and to apply, go to www.spirit.prudential.com or contact Mrs. Kristi Blackwell at kblackwell@evangelclassical.org.
ACT TESTING
Sophomores are all strongly encouraged to take the ACT on or before the June, 2012 date. All juniors should be actively working toward obtaining the ACT score they desire, with a goal of having it accomplished by the summer of 2012. Seniors, there is still time at some of the schools to which you applied to get a score high enough to achieve the next scholarship level. Check out all the test dates and registration deadlines at www.act.org. When you sign up, remember our school code is 010-028.
