What's Happening at ECCS
ECCS Places 5th in Robotics Competition
What an exciting day it was for students, sponsors, parents, and friends as they anxiously awaited the ECCS Robotics Team's challenge rotations at UAB's Bartow Arena on Saturday, October 8th. Twenty-eight schools from Shelby and Jefferson counties competed for the coveted title, and following a grueling eight hour competition of ups and downs, victories and defeats, dead batteries and full charges, the ECCS team moved up in the ratings to a fantastic first year final showing of 5th place! At the end of the day the final four teams qualified for the state competition with ECCS missing by just a hair:
1st Place--Spain Park High School
2nd Place--Oak Mountain High School
3rd Place--Homewood Middle School
4th Place-- Shades Mountain Technical School
5th Place--Evangel Classical Christian School
Thanks again to sponsor and teacher, Dave Johnson for his outstanding leadership, to Paul George for his UAB connection, and to John Kitts and many parents for their assistance.
Congratulations to the team: Jonathan Horton, Jonathan Justice,
Ross Garrett, Tyler Russell, Luke Herald, Jacob Wilkins, Adam Pierce, Lance Garrett, Trent Russell, Colson Benedict, Daniel Richardson, Josh Ragsdale, Grant Cotton, Russ Weas, Russell Pierce, Trevor Russell, and Wyatt Rickles. In addition, thanks to "Sparky" for the great performance!

Kindergartners Choose Careers

Last week marked the end of Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Pennington's thematic unit on Community Helpers. Many parents and other community helpers visited the class during the four week study. Among those who visited the class was a dentist, nurse, vet, policeman, fireman, musician, teacher, and pastor. Thanks to all the parents who made this unit a great success! On Friday the kindergartners donned uniforms and appropriate career attire as they eagerly anticipate their future jobs as leaders in our community. They truly are the leaders of tomorrow!

FIRST GRADERS EXPERIENCE BOTANICAL GARDENS

What a beautiful sunny day to visit the botanical gardens with the ECCS first grade classes!!  We learned about George Washington Carver and how he taught others to rotate cotton crops with peanut and sweet potato crops to provide nitrogen rich soil to help the cotton grow better.  We learned about all the products that are made from peanuts and even got to see and touch cotton, peanut and sweet potato plants.  The children were taught about this crop rotation by getting to play a fun hands-on game and also got to be detectives and search for edible plants they learned about!  To end the awesome visit, we learned how to use real binoculars to view flowers, birds, walk the trails and see many of God's beautiful creations that can be found at the gardens!

Author, Jennifer Pharr Davis, Visits ECCS
ECCS students and parents warmly welcomed visiting author, Jennifer Pharr Davis on October 24th. Mrs. Davis intrigued the audience with the stories of both the victories and challenges she faced during her 2,000 mile trek from Georgia to Maine along the Appalachian Trail. Along with an inspiring slide show, she described the natural beauty and wildlife of our great country and explained the value of pushing through hardships to do one's very best. Most importantly, her message encouraged the listeners to do all that they do for the glory of God.
A special thanks goes to Christy Brasher for connecting us with this impressive athlete, to the Shelby County Arts Council, and to Alagasco for their sponsorship. It is our goal to continue the great series of "Author's Visit" every year at ECCS!

2nd Graders Learn About Landforms
Mrs. Causey's second graders are enjoying Science for Classical Learners, the ECCS science curriculum written and developed by ECCS teachers. A recent unit has focused on "The Heavens and the Earth" in which they identified the layers of the earth. The students had some kenisthetic fun as they illustrated the layers with playdoh. Thank you, teachers for this informative and enjoyable lesson!
