JONATHAN HORTON RECEIVES THE CLASS OF 2012's FIRST COLLEGE ACCEPTANCE
Congratulations to senior Jonathan Horton for receiving the first college acceptance in the Class of 2012.  Jonathan received his acceptance letter from the University of Alabama just after school started in August.   We do expect that, as in the past two years, the acceptances and scholarships will come in for the Class of 2012 at a pace that will be impossible for us to keep you updated on every one.  But we did want to acknowledge our first one of the year and ask that you join the faculty and staff in prayer for our seniors as they make the decisions this year that will impact their lives so significantly in the future.

AFTER-HOURS CARE
Remember that due to the roofing repairs, all After-Hours Care pick-up will be downstairs at the grammar entrance until the roofing repairs are done.

ECCS Sports Updates
EVANGEL FALL SPORTS UPDATE
Congratulations to the Varsity football team for remaining undefeated. That record will be tested this Friday night at the Pelham High School stadium as they face their toughest opponent of the year thus far in Tuscaloosa Christian.  The JV team has lost only once this year--a heartbreaker earlier this week to Hope, but they have also had a great season.  Both cheerleading squads are superb as always, doing a great job to encourage the players and lead the crowd in cheering them on.

The volleyball teams are also having great seasons and remain dominant in our conference.  They played in the Rocket City Blast Invitational tournament Sept. 9-10 in Huntsville, and came in second. Congratulations, Lady Lightning! You can read about the volleyball and football teams in The Shelby County Reporter. Go to the Sports tab and select Evangel to see all the latest scores and highlights.

Grammar School Updates

PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

Isn't it amazing that we are already at Mid-term! We hope each of your children are experiencing a wonderful year in the grammar school. They are already impressing us with their gifts and abilities. We are so happy to have each student.

Each semester grammar parents are invited to schedule conferences with the grammar teachers. This can be a time to simply touch base with how well things are going or to discuss issues of concern. Our first semester conferences will be offered the week of October 3rd. Parents are encouraged to call Susan Morgan at 216-0149 to schedule a time to speak and conference with teachers.

Logic & Rhetoric School Updates
ROOFING WORK UNDERWAY
Construction on the new roof began right on schedule this Monday, and so far our L & R morning drop off and afternoon car lines have been very smooth.  We have just a couple of requests below that we believe will increase the safety and efficiency of the system:

-In the morning, please drop off at one of the four numbered cones only. We added those to give you a clearer picture of where to drop off.  Pull forward to the foremost cone, and please don't let your student out until you are at one of the four cones.

-In the afternoons, please don't park in the back parking lot and then pull into the car line.  The students are called by number to the correct cones, and when cars pull into the car line, it confuses the system by pushing the waiting parents back to a different numbered cone.  If you park in the back parking lot where pick up is occurring we ask that you wait until the car line has cleared before pulling out.  If you are in a hurry to get out, we ask that you park in the parking lot next to the Grammar School playground.

Thank you so much for your cooperation and gracious response to the situation.  The students have done a great job of adapting their afternoon routines to the new drop off point, and thus far we are running the afternoon pick up in about the same time as we had done upstairs. Thanks again!

ITALIAN ICE ON TUESDAYS
Remember Italian Ice on Tuesdays!  The students are loving this tasty treat.  Bring $2.00 exact change.

BALFOUR REPRESENTATIVE COMING SEPTEMBER 19 AND 23RD

A representative from Balfour will be here on Monday, September 19th to give the Juniors and Seniors information on class rings and graduation invitations. They will return on Friday, September 23 to take orders. They will be here a 8:00 both days and parents are welcome to attend. Please contact Mrs. Parks kparks@evangelclassical.org if you have any questions. Orders will require a deposit, which is usually around $60.00, though we have not yet been told what deposits will be required this year.

NJCL

There is an exciting academic club for your child at ECCS. All students in the logic and Rhetoric schools are eligible to join the ECCS chapter of the National Junior Classical League (NJCL). This is a fun-filled club that tries to encourage an interest in and appreciation of the languages, literature, and cultures of ancient Greece and Rome and to impart an understanding of our own cultures debt to classical antiquity. Although Latin is a big part of the NJCL, there is no requirement that your child be enrolled in a Latin class or that your child have a good grade in Latin. The NJCL is especially about encouraging students to love learning and to have fun with classical studies even Latin!

Student officers and faculty sponsors have planned exciting opportunities and events for this year such as: classical-themed outings, spoken-Latin excursions, service projects, parties, and the state convention in the spring. Last year around 400 Latin students from all around the state participated in two days of competitions, banquets, athletics, and celebrations. This year the ECCS chapter will be hosting the state convention at Samford University. This is a fantastic opportunity for ECCS and a lot of work. If you are interested in serving as a parent volunteer for any of our NJCL outings or the spring convention, please contact Mr. Caucutt at tcaucutt@evangelclassical.org.

Membership dues are $20 and help to pay for these exciting events, a club t-shirt, state, and national dues. Please make checks payable to ECCS (with NJCL in the memo line) and drop them off at the front desk. The early membership deadline closes next week: Friday, September 16th.

HOMECOMING WEEK

Homecoming week is next week, and as always, we will celebrate this week with special "dress up" days.  We will run a chapel bell all week, with fun periods during the chapel slot on Monday-Friday and a pep rally at the end of the day on Friday.

The dress up days are as follows:

Monday--Mythology Day

Tuesday--Hobby Day

Wednesday--Around the World Day

Thursday--Twin / Triplet Day

Friday--Spirit Day

The cardinal rule for dress up days is that you have to follow the spirit of the normal dress code.  Nothing shorter than the normal rules for shorts. Nothing any more revealing than the normal uniform. Nothing too tight or immodest in any way. (Shirts and appropriate length shorts and/or pants must be worn under any togas, for example.)  Shoes must have closed toes and heels.  Students should remember that the best costumes are creative and usually homemade.  Parents should feel under no obligation whatsoever to purchase elaborate costumes.

Finally, we do want to make sure that students know they have to either participate in the dress up day or wear a normal uniform.
