Website Launch of Parent Education Program (PEP)
| |
ECCS is happy to announce the launch of a new link at the Evangel Classical web page just for parents. It is called PEP (Parent Education Program). For years we have heard this comment from parents, "Having my children at ECCS has made me want to go back to school!" This site is a place for parents and teachers to share their knowledge and thoughts on classical education and other topics.
Have you ever wondered what our teachers are thinking about, discussing, and writing about? At PEP teachers will post their thoughts and articles on a variety of subjects. Another feature will include insightful book reviews of great literature and other interesting books. ECCS Faculty/Staff collectively read and discuss select books throughout the school year. We invite you to join the conversation as we provide book reviews of some of our favorite. We believe that educating ourselves is an important step in successfully educating our students. We hope you enjoy this new feature on the ECCS website!

Alaina George Featured in Sleeping Beauty
| |
ECCS student Alaina George attended the summer drama program at ArtPlay, sponsored by the Alys Stephens Center in Birmingham. Enhanced by colorful costumes, simple sets, and a creative cast of students from across the Birmingham area, Alaina impressively delivered her lines as she performed the role of Maleficent in both song and dance in the story of Seeping Beauty. Congratulations, Alaina, for a great performance!

Kindergartners Present NURSERY RHYME DAY
| |
Friday, September 23rd was a very special day for kindergarten students in Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Pennington's classrooms. Parents had been busy at home preparing costumes, reviewing nursery rhymes, and cooking fun foods associated with their child's rhyme. These activities culminated in the recitation from each kindergarten student of their nursery rhyme as the two classes gathered in the Evangel choir suite and performed for parents, teachers, and grandparents. Each student glowed amid the many smiles and proud applause. We are proud of each of them and look forward to many more years of presentation and recitation from this fine group!

5th Graders Survey "A Stitch In Time"
| Fifth graders at ECCS are learning the basics of stitchery as they study American History. In their study of exploration, the students learned the running stitch as they stitched the route of Ferdinand Magellan's voyage to circumnavigate the world. The stitching of samplers in early America was primarily done by children as a requirement in school. Although ladies were expected to learn and practice all the basic embroidery stitches, the young gentlemen in fifth grade are being taught about tailors, sailor thimbles and surgeons who must know basic sewing techniques as well. It is exciting to see students sew when they finish a test. History, Math and Bible assignments will continue to add basic stitchery to the curriculum as the year progresses. The students are encouraged to check out embroidery hoops, basic stitch instruction books, and needles to use at home. In my research of early American stitchery I found a quote that saddened me, "Schools no longer taught stitchery as the culture began to change and curricula were no longer required to teach women how to be good wives." It is my goal as a classical educator to change our culture for Christ. I pray that our 5th grade students will enjoy sewing just as much as they do video games.
Annie Goodsell, Maggie Thompson, Emme Lawrence, and Chloe Benedict join classmates in stitching Magellan's route around the world.

PTF sponsors Grammar Back-to-School Skate Party
| This year's back-to-school skate party at Bessemer's Roller Motion skating rink was a rolling success! Over one hundred ECCS grammar students and their parents rolled onto the scene to skate the afternoon away. The arcade games with fun prizes (like "Bubba" teeth!) were a big hit, and the PTF provided delicious cookies, and cold drinks for everyone! Thank you, PTF, for a fun Back-to-School party!

The Beat Goes On!
| Roofing work continues at Evangel Church, but thanks to the advances of pressure tools the noise has been minimal for the school. The work is about 50% completed and with the pleasant fall weather, completion is projected for late in October or early November. We appreciate all your patience and cooperation as we continue to use the downstairs Grammar office for business and pick-up. A special thanks to Susan Morgan and the grammar volunteers for their help and great attitudes as the traffic has increased. We love seeing all the L&R parents and visiting with old friends once again! We will actually miss you all when the roofing is complete! In the meantime, the beat goes on!

The Fruit and Joy of a Classical Christian Education
For many, the thought of a classical Christian education conjures up a picture of a dull and difficult task. Yet this initial impression of classical education swiftly fades away as one begins to see the fruit and joy of a classical and Christian approach. One soon begins to recognize that it compliments a child's normal development.
