ECCS LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR PROJECT

ECCS is a drop off location for Walmart and Target gift cards for displaced families devastated by the April 27th tornados.  Classroom teachers can involve their students in collecting change, grandparents and out of state relatives can send in money for this cause.  Spread the word on Facebook and by email.  Turn in any money or gift cards, at one of the front desks.  Email if you have any concerns, ideas or questions about this.  Visit the ECCS Scrip Program on Facebook or the ECCS Scrip page on the Evangel website for more information. This project will continue from May to the end of June.

ECCS NJCL Chapter Partners with Hueytown Chamber of Commerce to Collect Needed Items

The NJCL is partnering with the Hueytown Chamber of Commerce to provide items for the recent tornado victims. The drive will continue until May 20th, when a group of students and parents will take the items to Hueytown. Boxes will be available in the foyer to deposit items into and at the Logic School play on Friday and Saturday night. The complete list of possible items to donate is as follows:

batteries (all sizes), diapers, wipes, already mixed formula, blankets, clorox spray, candles, gauze, antibiotic cream, antiseptic wipes, alcohol, hand sanitizer, lotion, manual can openers, non-perishable and packaged snack food, tylenol, advil, allergy medications, paper towels, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, feminine products, pet food, sharpies, toilet paper, large trash bags, water, work gloves.

Laughter IS the Best Medicine!  Don't Miss The SeussOdyssey!

Been discouraged by the destruction of the recent tornadoes?  Join us for an hour of laughter and epic adventure, while helping out the victims of last week's deadly storms. The Logic School Drama Club will produce The SeussOdyssey, a hilarious rendition of Homer's Odyssey, as it would have sounded had the immortal Dr. Seuss told the story. It's a great show for those parents who want to know the story of the Odyssey, but just haven't had time to get around to reading it. The play will be performed on May 6th and 7th.  The May 6th performance is at 7:00, and the May 7th performance is at 2:00. Admission is free, but we would love for those attending to bring an item for the NJCL's tornado relief drive (see above).  Also, instead of taking up donations for the drama department at the end of the show, we will be taking up donations to purhase gift cards for tornado relief through the ECCS Love Your Neighbor Project.  Tell your friends and neighbors!  We want to have as many people attend as possible, not just to see our show, but so we can accomplish the most we can for tornado relief!  We are hoping for a minimum of $500 in donations for the gift card program and lots of items to give to the NJCL's drive.  Thanks so much from the 6th, 7th, and 8th graders of the LS Drama Club.

Sodas, water, popcorn, and cookies will be available to purchase for $1 each during each performance, so send snack money with students on Friday if you for wish for them to purchase snacks during the school performances. (9:00 Grammar and 12:45 Logic & Rhetoric)

Logic & Rhetoric School Updates

Dear ECCS Parents,

Last week was a sad week for our state and for our students.  Several of our students' and faculty members' families were deeply and personally affected by the tornadoes that swept through the state.  Even students who didn't have those personal connections were deeply affected.  We could see the shock and sadness on their faces as they walked in the building the Thursday morning. We allowed the students a period to talk about the events in their homerooms or grade levels, to pray with each other and with their teachers, and we were once again blessed and confirmed in our calling to be teachers at ECCS.  What an incredible, compassionate, loving group of students we have!  For many students, the overwhelming question was, "How can we help, and how soon can we get there?"

Students began emailing me, talking with their club sponsors, talking with each other--how can we help? By Thursday afternoon, many of our students had already found ways. Our Seniors had earned a day out that they took on Friday, April 29, and many of them spent it working for tornado relief.  Many students spent the day Saturday working wherever they could find outlets. The ECCS Chapter of the NJCL went right to work to make a plan of what and for whom ECCS students could collect to help the victims of the storms (see article above).  The Logic School Drama Club has transformed their upcoming drama performance into an event for tornado relief (see article above).  The Beta Club members, led by Mrs. Martha Earwood, are supporting the ECCS Scrip Neighbors in Need effort (see article above), and are looking for other ways that individual members can serve. For many students and teachers alike, summer plans have changed from play and leisure to continued service. I heard one student say, "I can't wait for school to be out so I can help out more than just on Saturdays."  Our prayer for our students and for our whole state is that we sustain this spirit of service until the need is completely met and until all the purposes that God has for this terrible event in the life of our state have been accomplished.  May he be glorified by our response to it, and may his love be shown through his people to those who are suffering.

In Christ,

Melissa Bell

Parent Meetings to Be Held in May

There will be a meeting for rising 9th graders and their parents on Monday night, May 16.  This meeting will include discussions of topics that are high school specific, such as GPA calculations, required graduation credits, electives, and college admission testing.  Any parents of rising sophomores or juniors who have questions are also invited to join the meeting, though it will be specifically designed for parents of rising freshmen. Both students and parents are strongly encouraged to attend the meeting.

There will be a meeting for rising sixth graders and their parents on Tuesday night, May 17.  This meeting will include topics specifically related to the transition to sixth grade and will include specific details about dress code, schedules, lockers, and the sixth grade curriculum.

We hope that all our rising sixth graders and their parents are able to attend.

Both meetings will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the choir suite.

June ACT Registration Deadline May 6
Juniors who have not yet achieved the ACT score they desire and who are not registered to take the test this April are strongly encouraged to sign up for the June 11 ACT test.  The deadline for registration is May 6.  Sophomores who have not yet taken the test (and who are not registered to take it in April) are strongly encouraged to take the June test also.

Save the Dates!
The Class of 2011 has just one week of regular classwork left before they begin their final exams that will lead them into graduation week.  We encourage everyone to save the dates of May 22 and May 26, our Baccalaureate and Commencement, respectively.  We are so proud of the class of 2011, so grateful to the Lord for bringing them all to ECCS, and so pleased to send them into the next phase of their lives.  These two services are very special parts of that sending, and we encourage the entire ECCS family to attend.
