ECCS SPIRIT DAY IS FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25TH!!

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

The ECCS Rhetoric School Drama Class, under the direction of Mrs. Kathy Houser, has been working hard on Shakespeare's

Much Ado About Nothing all year. They will present the play on Friday and Saturday nights, February 25 and 26 at 7:00 p.m., and we hope that the entire ECCS family will turn out to see what promises to be another spectacular performance.  Admission is free, and we ask you to invite your friends and neighbors to attend.

LAST WEEKEND TO FINISH READING FOR SIX FLAGS TICKETS!

The Six Flags Read to Succeed program offers free admission tickets to K5-6th grade students who complete six hours of recreational reading from now until the deadline of Monday, February 28th!!  Those who earn tickets will be awarded their free ticket at Awards Day on the last day of school.

WALK-A-THON UPDATE

Parents, please help your children address and mail the brochures or use the online version here.  Please mark your calendars and plan to help transport students to Veterans Park- grammar room moms and Mrs. Parks will be contacting families soon.  Here's what will happen that day:

Walk-a-Thon Dress

Those who are participating in the Walk-a-Thon and those who ordered a t-shirt should receive them before the 3rd and are asked to wear them to school that day.  Everyone else should wear this year's ECCS spirit day t-shirt.  Spirit Day dress applies, so students can wear jeans or shorts that are no more than 1 inch above the knee.  Since we will be walking a good bit, the students should wear tennis shoes.  All students will be walking in the event whether they participated in the fund-raising or not.

Walk-a-Thon Time & Location Details

All students will report to school next Thursday at the regular time.  Classes will begin to be dismissed at 8:30 to load cars and depart for Veteran's Park.  The walk will take place at the back of the park.  You can click here for a map of the location.  Drivers will be directed to park in the large lot facing the open field in the back of the park.

The Walk-a-Thon program will begin at 9:00 AM at the park.  After students complete the walk, we will have a brief awards ceremony and head back to school.  We plan for the Walk-a-Thon to be complete by 10:00 AM.

ANNUAL ECCS BOOK FAIR
Evangel Classical Christian School is hosting an Usborne Book and

Amen Corner Book Fair! The dates for the book fair are Monday, March 7 - Thursday, March 10. If you will be unable to attend the book fair on these days, there will be an Usborne Books eFair available online!  Simplygo to the Evangel Classical Christian School eFair link at www.ubah.com/BF45139 between now and midnight of Thursday, March 10 to purchase these great books for your children.

By purchasing books at the book fair and eFair, you will not only be

getting great books for your family but you will enable Evangel Classical

Christian School to earn free books that will further enhance the education of your child(ren.)

SCRIP CHALLENGE
Have you tried Scrip yet?  We challenge each family to purchase scrip at least once in February/March. You are spending money on clothes and eating out anyway.  Why not order a couple of gift cards a week?  If you are spending an average of $50/week on food and clothes and you use all of that on scrip, you will earn $192/year in rebates!  Ask me other ways to earn money with scrip.

EASY MONEY--CAMPBELL'S LABELS
Did you know that Bic Pens, Prego Sauce, PopSecret Popcorn, V8 drinks and Peppridge Farm all participate in the Campbell's Labels For Education Program?  Visit the LFE website and see what labels you can send in to the school.  ECCS can purchase classroom supplies and equipment with the points we earn.  All labels we turn in by May earn double points!

Math Competitions
Thank you, Liz Weas, for coordinating efforts for our students to compete in two upcoming tournaments hosted by local schools. Although Evangel does not currently have a math team, our students have been invited to participate in these tournaments. Both tournaments are competitions that are course-level based, not necessarily age-based, although the Randolph school tournament is designed for fifth and sixth grade competitors primarily. If your child would be at all interested in competing in either tournament, please get in touch with Mrs. Weas at 281-6307 right away.

Logic & Rhetoric School Updates

What a blessing Service Day 2011 was.  Many thanks to the parents who drove our Logic and Rhetoric School students to the various service opportunities last Friday.  We especially thank Mrs. Martha Earwood for organizing the event.  The students did a remarkable job, and we continue to receive positive feedback from the community on their efforts.  Junior Lauren Johnson put together a video collage that the Beta Club will submit to the National Beta Club competition.  It is available for viewing on our school website or by clicking here, so be sure to check it out! -- Thankfully, Melissa Bell

Employment Opportunities in the L & R School for 2011-2012

ECCS is looking for part and/or full time faculty in the humanities (Bible, History, Literature, Latin, and Spanish) for the 2011-2012 school year.  Applications can be picked up from our office or downloaded from the website.

Math Competitions
Thank you, Liz Weas, for coordinating efforts for our students to compete in upcoming math tournaments. Although Evangel does not currently have a math team, our 6th and 7th grade students have been invited to participate in these tournaments. They are competitions that are course-level based, not necessarily age-based. If your child(ren) might be at all interested in competing in one of the tournaments you received an e-mail about last week, please get in touch with Mrs. Weas at 281-6307 right away.

Junior Classical League Convention

The annual Alabama Junior Classical League convention is fast approaching! Last year's convention in Huntsville was a wonderful experience and our school won many awards and great recognition statewide. We hope to make a good showing again this year in the athletic, artistic, and academic competitions. Due to some changes in our state leadership earlier this semester, information about the convention was given to us rather late and now we are scrambling to meet deadlines and get our own ECCS chapter of the National Junior Classical League organized. This year's convention will be cheaper and more convenient since it will be hosted by Samford University on April 1st & 2nd. Students who wish to attend must bring a check for $30 (payable to ECCS) to our treasurer, Zach Shackleford by next Monday, Feb. 28th. If you have any questions please feel free to contact NJCL consul David Baggett or NJCL sponsor Miss Montgomery.

Second Annual Senior Thesis Disputatio

On the evening of Monday, March 7, our seniors will continue with a tradition begun last year; they will present and defend their senior theses before an audience and a panel of adjudicators.  The presentation and defense of the senior thesis represents the culmination of these students' studies at ECCS.  This year their thesis topics range from C.S. Lewis's use of parable to marriage as a reflection of the Trinity to the oppressiveness of major religions on women to the effects of technological advancements in warfare. The seniors began work on this project during their junior year, and they have worked tirelessly to ensure that the thesis itself, as well as the presentation and defense of it, accurately, eloquently, and gracefully reflect the passion and perseverance required to complete such a project.

The event will begin promptly at 5:30 in the Evangel Sanctuary and is open to all adults and students grades six and up. (Younger students are welcome, of course, but the event will be several hours long, and the topics hard for younger children to understand.)  Please join us for this special event as we celebrate with these seniors the culmination of their study of Rhetoric.

National Latin Exam

The National Latin Exam will be administered to all 6th through 12th grade students on Monday, February 28.  Students need to get plenty of sleep and eat a good breakfast.

Friday Dance Lessons to Continue Until Protocol
Eighth-twelfth graders are invited to dance lessons each Friday from 3:30-4:30.  If you are brining a guest from outside ECCS to the Protocol Dance, your guest is welcome to attend the Friday dance lessons!

Protocol Tickets on Sale
Tickets are on sale for the Second Annual Spring Protocol Dance (grades 9-12), which will be held on March 25. Tickets are $40, and will be sold through March 11.  Any parents who would be willing to serve on the Protocol Committee, please email Mrs. Kim Parks (kparks@evangelclassical.org.). Dress for the Protocol is formal.  Guys should wear suits or tuxedos, and girls should wear formal gowns.  The guidelines for the dresses are to ensure modesty--no exposed cleavage at all, no exposed back below the bra line, and no dresses shorter than 1 inch above the knee.  If you have a question about a dress, please don't hesitate to ask, send a picture, etc.  It is especially important for boys who are bringing outside dates to communicate the dress standard to their dates.  We know that dresses that do not fit our standards are easier to find than dresses that do; however, we ask for the support of both our girls and our parents as we strive to meet that higher standard.

Drivers Needed for Walk-a-thon
Any parents who are willing to transport our students to Veteran's Park on March 3 for the Walk-a-thon, please submit your forms by Monday, February 28.

April ACT Registration Deadline Approaching
To avoid a late fee for registering for the April 9th ACT test, you must register by March 4.  The ECCS ACT Code is 010-028.  Any sophomores who have not yet taken the ACT should consider taking it in April or June.  Any juniors who have not yet achieved the score they desire should take the ACT in either April or June.  While grades 6-9 take the SAT's during the week of March 28, the sophomores and juniors will have ACT prep sessions.  Freshmen, whose SAT's are shorter than those of grades 6-8, will have at least one day of ACT prep as well.
