ECCS Welcomes New L&R Office Receptionist
We want to thank Mrs. Melissa Holloway for her service to ECCS as the L&R Receptionist over the past year. Mrs. Holloway's last day as our Logic and Rhetoric Receptionist will be October 22nd.  She has done a great job for us, and we are sad to see her go.  However, we rejoice with her, as she has found an exciting position with the Institutional Review Board of St. Vincent's Hospitals.  We know she will do a great job there, and we ask that you join us in prayer for her as she begins her new position.  We are delighted to be able to announce that Mrs. Leisa Holcombe has taken the position of L & R Receptionist, and will be working with Mrs. Holloway beginning this Monday, October 4th.  The Lord has truly blessed us in the people he has sent to work at the school, and we know that you will support, encourage, and pray for Mrs. Holcombe, as you have done for all of us through the years

Fall Break is just around the corner!
Please be reminded that our Fall Break is next week--October 8th-11th. We hope each of you have a blessed and restful break and enjoy this wonderful cool weather!
Also, the Fall Break marks the end of our first quarter (Can you believe that?) Report Cards will go home on Friday, October 15th, which is also our next Spirit Day.

Eric Metaxas
Please continue to pray for our upcoming ECCS Author's Visit. It is our hope that Mr. Metaxas' visit will be a blessing to the school and the greater Alabaster community. Please tell your friends about this unique opportunity. Flyers are available in the office for anyone who would like to post one in their home church or on community bulletin boards. Thank you for your help in publicizing this event.

Principal's Coffee--Friday, October 22nd
Parents of Grammar and Logic and Rhetoric students are invited to enjoy a casual time to talk with our principals on Friday morning from 8:15-9:00a.m. in the church library.  Coffee and donuts will be served.

Robotics Update
It was wonderful to hear that parents and students from ECCS enjoyed the Robotics demonstration at the Galleria for Blazer BEST Mall Day last Saturday.

The next opportunity to observe and find out more about this UAB program will be at the Game Day competition which will be held at the UAB Bartow Arena on Saturday, October 9th.  Individuals (or a collective group) from ECCS would be MORE than welcome to visit for some portion of that day.  In fact, they have told us that they would "roll out the red carpet" for anyone from ECCS who would like to visit and learn more about the competition.

In terms of how the competition game day will progress, the actual "on-field" competitive matches will begin around 10:00 AM.  There will be a myriad of activities such as oral presentations, display table/display booth interviews, tee-shirt judging, etc. that will be going on starting a little earlier in the morning - and ECCS folks are welcome to visit those as well.  The really crazy atmosphere kicks in once the competitive matches begin.  They invite pep bands, cheerleaders, mascots, a DJ to make these deserving young people feel like stars.  They cheer for these young people and the efforts they have made.

According to ECCS dad and Board member, Mr. Paul George, they would love to see ECCS students attend and subsequently have discussions about participating next year.  ECCS certainly has amazingly bright, insightful, talented students...and if we can build the momentum we can see a strong first-year ECCS effort in 2011.

The competition gets started at 10:00 a.m. and the rounds will continue throughout the day until probably around 5:30 or 6:00.  Anyone is welcome at any time during that window, especially 4-12th graders.
Logic & Rhetoric School Updates
Dear Logic and Rhetoric Parents,

I am so proud of our L & R students for the great job they did last week participating in our special homecoming activities and adapting to the week's flexible schedule.  We had a great time together, but I think we're all glad to be back on a regular schedule.

There are a few changes coming to our front office in the month of October that I wanted to make you aware of.  On Monday, October 4, Mrs. Parks will be having surgery, and she will be out for several weeks.  We ask that you all join us in prayer for her safe and speedy recovery.

In addition, as you read above, Mrs. Holloway's last day as our Logic and Rhetoric Receptionist will be October 22nd, and Mrs. Leisa Holcombe will be joining us next Monday in the front office.  Thank you for your support during this time of transition.  You have been such a blessing to us all, and we are so thankful for all of you.

In Christ,
Melissa Bell

Fall Festival
Thanks to Mrs. Martha Earwood and the Beta Club for planning the student workers at Fall Festival.  Thanks also to Mrs. Rebecca Reese  for coordinating the Logic basket and Mrs. Kathryn Rapier  for coordinating the Rhetoric basket for the Silent Auction.  You will be hearing from them soon with details of the baskets they are planning.

Community Service Opportunities
ECCS freshmen through seniors are required to do community service each semester.  Freshmen are required to serve for six hours per semester; sophomores, seven; juniors, eight; and seniors, ten.  Many of our students routinely exceed the minimum number of hours and have found great joy in serving.  We hope that all our high school students will find a niche in which to serve.  Those who do will of course be rewarded most by the service itself, but they will also find that the time they devote to community service is highly useful when filling out college applications, most of which ask about community service, and some of which even require an accounting of hours. There are several timely community service opportunities currently posted on the SGA and Beta Club bulletin boards.

College Bound Workshop October 4 at 6:00 p.m. in Library
Mr. Dylan Scroggins, from the Admissions office at Samford University, will hold a workshop on next Monday night in the library for ECCS freshmen through sophomores. He will be speaking of about what students at all high school grade levels should be doing to prepare now for college.  Of course, he will be highlighting Samford University, but he will also be able to give students and parents a lot of good general information, so we encourage all who are able to attend the workshop.

PSAT October 13
All ECCS sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 13.  We encourage them to make every effort to be at school on that date as that is the only date we will be able to offer this very important test this year.

8th - 12th graders, don't forget to be working on Amazing Grace.
Athletic Updates
The volleyball teams have continued their winning streaks--congratulations to them on their great seasons.  The JV football team also remains undefeated, and with wins this past Friday and Monday, the Varsity team has improved to 4-2.
