Greetings!
Welcome to the 2010-11 school year! On Monday we began our second decade as a school, and we proudly open this our eleventh year being fully accredited through the Association of Classical and Christian Schools! We welcome back all the returning families, faculty, and staff as well as the new families and faculty that have joined us for the upcoming school year. We consider it an honor to partner with each of you in the education of your children. Our commitment to you is:
- to exalt the Lord as we trust in Him for salvation,
- to teach every subject from a Christian worldview so that students develop a deep reverence for God
- to employ classical methodologies of the Trivium across the curriculum by seeking and sharing knowledge, growing in wisdom, and pursuing excellence in all that is taught and done at ECCS
- to love, to discipline, and to encourage your children as they grow in their knowledge of Christ and their commitment to Him
- to work towards developing culture changers for Christ by modeling peace, consideration, submissiveness, mercy, the fruit of the Holy Spirit, impartiality, and sincerity as we endeavor to raise a harvest of righteousness.
This year we welcome 323 children to our student body and 47 of those are new students! This number represents 63 churches and 13 denominations from the Alabaster, Pelham, Calera, Chelsea, Bessemer, and Columbiana areas. Our theme verses for this year are: "The Lord is exalted...He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure." Isaiah 33:5-6 "The wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peaceable, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness." James 3:17-18
It is our goal to sow peace in the lives of students and ECCS families, resulting in a great harvest of righteousness. Thank you for your support and continued prayers throughout this new school year.

Back to School "Barn Dance" Saturday, August 21
The International Travel Club is sponsoring the Back to School Barn Dance this Saturday night. The Logic School dance will begin at 5:00 and end at 7:00, and the Rhetoric School dance will be from 7:30-10:00. Dress casually, wear your cowboy hat if you have one, and come prepared to learn some new line dances and enjoy our old favorites as well. Admission is $5.00, and all proceeds go to the International Travel Club. Refreshments will be provided.
Open House August 26
The Logic and Rhetoric School Open House will be held next Thursday night, August 26, beginning at 7:00 p.m. We will first meet briefly in the sanctuary for a few general announcements and instructions. Then the parents and students will walk through the students' daily schedule, with five minutes allotted to each "period." The evening will provide an opportunity for parents to associate a face with each of your child's teachers and vice versa. Though there will not be enough time during the Open House for individual parent - teacher conferences, our prayer for the event is that it will open strong lines of communication between teachers and students and answer your general questions about the individual classes. We hope to see you all "back in school" next Thursday night.
Spirit Day Tee Shirts Beginning next Monday, the sample Spirit Day tee-shirts will be on a table in the upper atrium so that parents who desire to do so may come in and look at the shirt sizes. Parents do not have to come in, however, and the office staff will assist any student who needs help determining his/her correct size. All L & R tee shirt orders should be placed by the end of Open House next Thursday night.
Student Driver Forms
Please make sure to turn in your Student Driver Authorization form and any needed Car Rider Permission forms. Remember that we cannot release students to ride with student drivers unless we have signed permission from both sets of parents.
Afternoon Car Line Thanks so much for your wonderful cooperation in afternoon car line. Already the car line is running smoothly and quickly. It should only get better in the next couple of weeks. Thanks especially for your cooperation in not coming into the atrium until car line is over--it really helps to keep the noise level down so that students can hear their names called and get out to their cars quickly. All parents are asked to please use the Evangel School entrance off Thompson Road and wind through the upper level parking lot to allow maximum room for cars to turn off of Thompson Road both in the morning drop-off and the after-noon pick-up.
First Chapel August 23
Our first chapel of the school year is next Monday, August 23. Mr. Thomas Caucutt will be speaking, and our new chapel team under the leadership of Mr. Mark Gainey and Evangel Church Music Director Ms.Connie Reynolds, will be leading the students in worship. Parents are always welcome to attend chapel--just check in at the desk and get a visitor's badge.
Beta Club Induction August 30
Parents are welcome to attend our Jr. and Sr. Beta Club Induction ceremony on Monday, August 30. The ceremony will begin at 8:05 in the sanctuary. Thanks to Mrs. Martha Earwood for revitalizing our Beta Club!

Any juniors or seniors who wish to take the September 11 ACT may still do so. Late registration ends on August 20.
All sophomores and juniors are strongly encouraged to sign up for the October 23 ACT. Register soon for the best chance of getting the test venue of your choice. After September 17, a late fee will be required to register for the October 23 date. |

JV Lightning Dash Hope
Congratulations to the JV football team for their excellent 16-2 win over Hope Christian Tuesday night. The rain didn't stop the football team from playing hard, the cheerleaders from cheering them on, or the enthusiastic crowd from enjoying a great football game. We hope that everyone will be able to come out for future JV games this season.
Varsity Football Begins this Friday Night!
Don't miss the first varsity game of the season! The Varsity Lightning will try to follow the JV and "dash" some more Hope at home (Shelby Academy field) this Friday night at 7:00. We encourage all our families, whether you have a player on the team or not, to come on out to the game, enjoy the great fellowship, and cheer the Lightning on to victory.
Football Double Header August 27
Both Lightning teams will play on Friday, August 27 at home against Franklin. The JV game will begin at 5:30 with the varsity game to follow. NOTE: In the L & R Notes that was sent out last week, an error was made on the events calendar. There will be no varsity football game on August 28.
Volleyball Season Underway
The first home volleyball game of the season is tonight, August 19. Both the JV and Varsity teams will play the Tuscaloosa Warriors at home (Shelby Academy Gym) beginning at 5:30. If you've never been to an Evangel volleyball game, you are missing out. Coach Dan Ellis has done a great job with the girls, who dominated the conference last season and appear set to do the same this year. Their next home game will be Thursday, August 26 if you can't make it out to Shelby Academy tonight.
