| ECCS L & R Back to School Notes | August 14, 2010 |
Greetings!
It's hard to believe that summer break is over, but school does start Monday. Additionally, both football and volleyball seasons will start up Tuesday. The L & R office staff and faculty members have been working hard to get ready, and we know that you have been busy getting prepared as well. We are all eager for the return of the students and looking forward to a great year ahead. What a joy it has been to have the students back in the building the past two Fridays for our Open Door times. The Open Doors provided a relaxed, informal opportunity for the returning L & R students to visit with each other and their teachers and for the new students to walk through their schedules, learn where the rooms are, and of course, practice opening those lockers. Because we will not have our formal "Open House" until August 26, however, I wanted to take this opportunity to send you all a few notes about the first week of school. I hope the information is helpful. |

Parent / Student Handbook The L & R Handbook is available online at www.evangelclassical.org. The link is in the bottom right corner of the home page. The handbook is little changed from last year's except in format, which we have made more readable and with an expanded Table of Contents to enable you to find the information you need more quickly. There are a few changes, however, so be sure to go through it with your student and sign the back of your "RenWeb Student Information" sheet that you have read it. (For those of you who have Grammar School students, Sections I-IV, VI, and VII are virtually identical to the Grammar Handbook, so you need not read those again.) We will be going through portions of Sections VIII-XIV with the students at school during the first week, but we do ask that you also go through those sections as well and that you return your signed RenWeb Student Information sheet to the L & R office no later than Friday, August 20. |

|
RenWeb Student Information Sheets Remember to update your Student Information Sheets before turning them in to make sure that the school has the most current contact information for your family. Also, these sheets contain the field trip permission and medical information for your child. These sheets are not available on the website, and several of them have not been picked up yet. Please come by the office to pick up and update your child's sheet if you have not already done so. |
|
Transportation The people you have granted permission to transport your child remains the same as last year on RenWeb unless you notify the school in writing that there is a change. Mrs. Holloway will be happy to look up who is currently on RenWeb to transport your child. Please see "Student Drivers" below if you wish for your child to be transported by a student driver. |

Morning Arrival and Dismissal The major change that might affect you on Monday morning is that Before Hours Care is now going to be held downstairs, rather than in the upper atrium. Therefore, should you need Before Hours Care, you should drop your Logic and Rhetoric students off downstairs. When the 7:40 bell rings, they may then go upstairs to the locker area. The upper atrium doors will remain locked until 7:40, as there will be no BHC supervision upstairs, so please do not drop students off at the upper entrance before 7:40.
Our afternoon dismissal usually runs very smoothly. Please be patient with us, however, in the first few weeks of school as we work through the process and train the new students in our car line procedure. We have lime green car rider signs for you to place in your cars to help us identify you and make afternoon car line go faster. If you have a Grammar School student, you already received one of these at the Grammar Open House. You also may have already picked one up at the second Open Door. For those of you who do not have one, you can pick one up at the office Monday morning. We will distribute any remaining car rider signs to the oldest sibling in the family during car line on Monday afternoon. The car line procedure can be found in the L & R Handbook in Section VIII.B.2. |

Student Drivers One very visible result of the growth and aging of our school is the increase in the number of student drivers we have this year. We have had no problems to speak of with our student drivers in the past, and we anticipate none in the future. We will speak specifically to our student drivers during Convocation on Monday morning, providing them with specific arrival and dismissal instructions and will distribute a form to them which we ask you to fill out and return on Tuesday. That form can be accessed from www.evangelclassical.org. Go to "About" then "Forms and Resources" and click on the Student Driver Authorization form.
You will also see a Car Rider Authorization form there as well. This form is required for any students who are riding home with non-sibling student drivers. We must have written permission from the parents of the student driver, as well as from the parents of the student passengers to allow any non-sibling student leave with a student driver. Should your student begin driving during the year, you will need to notify us and fill out the appropriate forms.
We do not take the safety of our student drivers lightly; therefore, we check them out at the door, dismissing them before car line begins if they are ready to go or detaining them until after car line ends to keep them out of the car line traffic as much as possible. We also begin calling the parents of absent student drivers at 8:30, so we very much appreciate an email or call from a parent whenever a student driver is going to be absent. |

Locker Update
If your child is a freshman or had one of the smaller "Logic School" lockers last year which were in the Rhetoric Locker area, he/she might have been assigned a locker which has not arrived yet. We ordered the lockers early in the summer, but the delivery date has been pushed back, and unfortunately they are not in place for the beginning of the school year. We thank the affected students and parents for their support, encouragement, and sense of humor about the lack of lockers, and we apologize for the inconvenience the students will have the first week of school. We know that several of the students have already made arrangements with other students to share locker space or with teachers to have a "home base" in a classroom. We will also have a cabinet in the kitchen that students can access to store materials until those lockers arrive. Mrs. Bell will check with the lockerless students Monday morning to make sure they all have an acceptable mechanism in place for storing and retrieving materials, as we do not want them to have to carry a heavy backpack all day. We do expect the lockers to come in during the next two weeks. |

Chapel Dress
One of the most common questions we have had over the last two weeks is whether or not students should wear Chapel Dress on the first day of school. I love that question because it shows me that students remember that Monday is Chapel/Convocation day and that we wear Chapel Dress on Mondays. The answer is yes, wear your chapel dress if you have it, but don't stress out if you don't. I have already heard that several freshmen forgot about having to have a tie and thus ordered them late. I also know that several of the girls had a hard time finding the right size in the plaid skirt. Therefore, we will not be penalizing in any way if you cannot come in chapel dress on the first day of school. If, however, you have trouble getting the right uniform pieces before Monday, August 23, please let us know ahead of time to avoid the student being officially warned for failure to wear chapel dress. |

On a personal note, I want to thank you all for your donations of Klenex, paper towels, Clorox Wipes and Expos. As a mom of three myself, I know that the school supply costs add up quickly, and I want you to know that the faculty and I really appreciate the extra sacrifice you make to help us preserve the teachers' classroom funds for other purposes. More than that, I thank you for the support and encouragement you have always given us and continue to give us.
I know that this summer your preparations for the start of school have been more difficult than usual in many ways. We made needed uniform changes, Lands End made some logo errors, L.L. Bean discontinued the clear-wheeled backpack, and our local vendors of the girls' uniform shoe went out of business. As a mom who searched high and low for a clear-wheeled backpack, with two red shirts to send back myself, I want you to know that I empathize, and I so appreciate the graciousness and understanding that you have displayed as we have worked through this summer together. I especially want to thank Mrs. DeeDee O'Neal for her work on the uniform committee, her long hours of work with Lands' End getting our school store set up and our logo issues resolved, and her work on the girls' shoe issue. Finally, I hope everyone has a chance to see the football teams, cheerleaders, and volleyball teams in action this month. There are a lot of games in August, and they are posted in the blue box on the right hand side of this newsletter. Go Ligntning! Sincerely, Melissa Bell Evangel Classical Christian School Logic and Rhetoric School Principal |
