Bronko Nagurski is considered one of the greatest American football players of all time. As a University of Minnesota Golden Gopher, Bronko was the first and only athlete to be named All-American on offense and defense in the same year. As a Chicago Bear, Bronko was one of the original "Monsters of the Midway" and led the Bears to several national championships from 1930-37 and 1943. In 1963, Bronko was enshrined as a charter member of the Professional Football Hall of Fame.
In conjunction with Nagurski being named a Big Ten icon, September 25, 2010 has been declared "Bronko Nagurski Day" in Minnesota. The University of Minnesota, where Nagurski starred from 1927-29, will host a number of events to honor Nagurski, culminating with a presentation at the Golden Gopher-Northern Illinois football game at TCF Stadium at 7:30 p.m. |
