summer_celebrationRight now our Garden Showcase is absolutely packed with blooming flowers, perennials, gorgeous roses bushes, shrubs and more -- not to mention a huge selection of outdoor furniture, gifts, gardening supplies and more.  And you can still find many items for annual and perennial beds. If you've been finishing up with kids in school, baseball games and a long "to-do" list you may be wondering, "Is it too late to plant?" Absolutely not. If you stay on top of watering, this is a fine time to plant beds and containers to give your garden a burst of color for the rest of summer and into the fall.

We also have a large selection of plants designed to take the heat or to use in places where hand watering may be difficult.  Our Garden Showcase Staff can also help you pick our plants that will work best in your garden.

tomato plantHave you ever tried growing your own tomatoes?  It's actually very easy.  And the FDA says that tomatoes grown in your backyard are not likely to carry a risk for salmonella. You might try a variety like the German Johnson you see on the right. They are absolutely delicious and nothing tastes like a tomato still warm off the vine. At L.A. Reynolds we still have lots of tomato plants in stock.  And one plant may be all you need.  We also recommend a product called "Tomato-Tone" Plant Food.  Pick a spot in full sun for best results and water regularly.  Great project for families with kids and anyone who loves a homegrown tomato!

How to Protect your Plants from the Heat

How to Protect your Plants, Trees and Shrubs from the Sun
When the thermometer starts climbing into triple digits and no rain is in sight, your plants may start to droop. What can you do to keep your plants healthy during the hottest season? Here are some tips:
miracle growTry one of the new products that help retain water in the soil.  There are several new products on the market that can help retain water.  One we offer is Miracle Grow Moisture Control.  It soaks up excess water and then releases it as the plant needs it. This can be helpful particularly with plants in containers.
Try succulents -- plants that can tolerate high heat and direct sun because they store water in their stems, roots and leaves.  One plant that was ice plantincredibly popular this year at our Showcase  was "Ice Plant." It has a pretty green base and coral looking flowers. We've had great feedback locally from gardeners that have tried this plant in past seasons.
Stay on a watering schedule -  Plants in the direct sun, particularly new plants that are not established, are going to need plenty of water in the upcoming weeks. Containers, small plants and newly planted trees or shrubs may need to be watered daily when the staffer wateringtemperatures start to soar. Watch your plants for signs of stress.  Drooping leaves and wilting mean more water is needed. An important tip:  make sure the water is cool when you first start to water.  Water will heat up if it sits in the garden hose in the hot sun and you'll be pouring hot water on your plants.  Also agricultural experts warn that it's not safe to spray any sort of garden chemicals when it's over 90 degrees.
Collect rain water - collecting rain water is a wonderful way to re-use natural resources.  We sell a sturdy 75-gallon rain barrel with an attached hose that's really simple to operate. Don't forget to mulch - A nice thin layer of mulch will help keep the soil protected from the sun and prevent it from drying out.  Pull the mulch back from the base of your plants.
