VMA Model for Workforce Development Launched with Lynchburg Chamber |
|
|
|
The VMA has partnered with the Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce (LRCC) to close the middle skills gap for trained manufacturing technology workers. According to a recent study conducted by Mangum Economic Consulting, LLC, industry employment projections between 2008 and 2018 show 543 annual manufacturing openings in the Lynchburg MSA, of which 429 of those annual openings, or 80%, will be in middle skill occupations that generally only require on-the-job-training (OJT) or other skills training. Comparing the average demand to the estimated average annual supply of trained workers shows that the largest anticipated gap (minus 417) is in "middle-skill" occupations.

"We are pleased to partner with the Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce to provide a systemic approach to addressing the advanced technology middle skills needs of regional employers. Our resources and tools will complement existing partnerships to close the skills gap and create a pipeline of skilled advanced technology workers in the Lynchburg region," said Katherine DeRosear, VMA Director of Workforce Development, shown above presenting to the Lynchburg Chamber's Central Virginia Industries Council in August 2011.
The VMA skills development model includes career exploration tools, work readiness standards, targeted skills training and assessment for critical occupations, and an online career resource center, including a job board for advanced technology job placement. Crystal Clean and BuckCard programs added |
The VMA is pleased to announce a partnership with both Heritage-Crystal Clean and BuckCard in order to bring more valuable services and products to its membership. Heritage-Crystal Clean (HCC) is the second largest and fastest growing parts cleaning and industrial wastes services provider in the United States. As a division of Simple Benefits, BuckCard specializes in non-traditional benefits programs and services. "Everything the VMA offers is strategically done in order to help reduce the cost of operations for Virginia manufacturers to be productive, profitable and globally competitive," explains Alice Scott, VMA's Director of Marketing and Member Services. "The programs available through Crystal Clean and BuckCard will help us continue this effort."
Environmental compliance is a critical yet costly aspect of many manufacturing processes. Crystal Clean lowers a company's environmental compliance costs though a variety of services, including parts cleaning (solvent & aqueous), waste minimization, drum waste management, environmental audits, Crystal Cat™ absorbent products and services, water filtration services and management, manifest and label preparation; and vacuum and used oil truck services. VMA members will also be eligible for discounts on the various products and services offered by Crystal Clean, whether they are a current or new client.
With healthcare costs constantly rises, offering comprehensive medical benefits to employees is more difficult for employers. The most popular benefit offered by BuckCard is a telemedicine program. The American Medical Association estimates that over 70% of visits to a doctor's office can be handled over the phone. BuckCard offers a program that provides an employee's family members with access to a board-certified medical doctor by phone, email or through 2-way video 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For employers, the telemedicine program reduces the cost of medical insurance premiums through fewer claims and productivity costs through fewer work absences related to doctor visits. Other benefits offered through BuckCard include LifeLock Identity Theft protection, veterinarian services discounts, dental services discounts, and more.
For more information on these programs, please contact Alice Scott at ascott@vamanufacturers.com or 804-643-7489 ext. 23. You may also contact Jim Skelton of Crystal Clean directly at 847-783-5110 or Jim.Skelton@Crystal-Clean.com, or BuckCard directly at www.buckcard.com.
