2011 General Assembly Session

Update on Priority Legislation

Yesterday was crossover for the Virginia General Assembly, the date by which all bills must have been acted on by the originating body and will then be sent to the other body for action.  So far, in the 2011 legislative session, the VMA has been managing more than 100 bills, including ten priority bills.

With specific goals identified by the VMA Board and published in July 2010 in the Virginia Industrial Innovation Strategy, this "blue print" specifically enables us to successfully communicate our strategies to lower the manufacturing sector's effective tax rate, reduce the cost of regulatory compliance, improve the quality of worker skills and keep energy costs affordable and reliable.

In pursuit of these goals, the VMA is supporting the following 2011 priority legislation, with a significant grassroots effort of phone calls, emails and letters made for HB1636 (Machinery & Tools Taxation Reform) along with local media attention for the 1st two issues:

Small Business Extension Passes House of Representatives

In Congress, the House of Representatives has passed the latest in a series of short-term measures aimed at extending the authorization for Small Business Administration programs through May 31, 2011.  The bill (H.R.366) passed by voice vote under suspension of the rules, an expedited process that limits debate and amendments.

Bill sponsor Sam Graves (R-Mo), chairman of the House Small Business Committee, said that working on a more permanent extension of Small Business Administration programs is one of his top priorities.  Click here for the complete press release from Miller/Wenhold Capitol Strategies, LLC.
