Foster Funnies

Here's a note from one of our fosters:

"So I was in the bathroom with the door shut, just having showered, and my discarded t-shirt that I wore last night was lying on the floor by the door.  All of a sudden I saw the t-shirt disappearing through the gap between the bottom of the door and the floor -- when I peeked out I saw Chester dragging my t-shirt into the hallway.

When I came out, he had my

t-shirt and the blanket that had been in my recliner, and he was lying on them. Maybe he does like me, just a little bit."

Volunteers Needed for Transport Team

We have a fabulous team of transporters, but we can always use new faces to help reduce the burden on the most faithful few who handle our 10-20 weekly short and long haul transports.

Typical transports include moving dogs between our vets and our foster
homes or boarding facilities. Times may be flexible or restricted depending on the circumstances. Regular emails alert you to upcoming
transports and you respond only if the logistics work for you. Crates can sometimes be loaned if you don't have one.

Can you help with this important "hands on the dogs" task? You will be
surprised and touched by how they respond to your kindness even in a short transport.

Hello Friends of Safe Harbor,

Jackie 11-29-10
We have already rescued 272 Labs this year and still have a busy month ahead of us! Safe Harbor's committed role in the guardianship and level of care for our rescued Labs sets us apart and gives us great pride.

Every Lab is vaccinated, microchipped, spayed/neutered, heartworm tested and their numerous health needs, simple or complex, are addressed by our top notch vet partners; each is lovingly fostered, allowing us to get to know them so we can find just the right forever home.

This is an enormous undertaking for our all-volunteer rescue. Imagine the vet bills for almost three hundred Labs, many of them neglected or poorly cared for! It's no wonder ever-rising medical costs make up the vast majority of our expenses.

Please join us in providing thorough, quality care for our rescued Labs by including Safe Harbor, a501(c)(3) public charity, in your year-end giving plans. Adoption fees do not cover the costs of readying Labs for their forever homes. We rely on the compassion and generosity of donors like you to help bridge the gap. Often an employer will match your gift.

Together what a difference we can make for these wonderful Labs who truly deserve a second chance.

Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday Season!

A Happy Ending for Bella and Her Family
Happiness is . . . . Being Home for the Holidays and Forever!

What could be more wonderful than to be a cherished family member at the Holidays and all year round! Bella and her little family of four have each had their dream come true: a loving forever home of their own.

Young Bella's precious family had a precarious beginning. Left outdoors, Bella was abandoned as she struggled for several days with a difficult delivery. She managed to give birth to two puppies, but was doing poorly. Her life and those of two more babies were saved by dedicated vets who performed an emergency c-section.

An incredibly generous and kind family -- Sybil, Mason, Ivy and Austin -- offered to foster this little family when the puppies were a mere 4 days old and Bella was recovering from surgery. Bella, a loving and patient mom, had a generous spirit towards all who came to visit and fuss over her little ones -- Beau, Spike, Cookie and Ebony. Between their mom and their foster family, these puppies have been loved every second of their short lives! Miss Bella, gentle, tenderhearted and always ready with a kiss, flourished. Thoroughly adored by her foster family, her neglect became a faded memory.

It wasn't easy for the foster family to see Bella and her puppies leave after being a part of their family for two months, but meeting the excited new forever families brought happiness all around!

Adoption Success Story: Dublin (fka Chelsea)

We love this letter that we received from the family that adopted Chelsea:

We have had a sad year, losing 2 beloved dogs to cancer within 4 months. Our Lab, Gunnar, was struggling with the losses as well. We absolutely needed another baby here, for all of us, but we had to be careful - it had to be the right personality and temperament, as Gunnar is a bit "wobbly" at his age.

Well, along comes Miss Dublin (previously Chelsea). Not a lot was known about this precious girl other than she was a stray and had recently had puppies. Dear foster Mom Melody contacted us and described her sweetness and her immense ability to love so off I went for a visit.

Love, love and more love at first sight. My husband was away so I went alone with his blessings. First glance, first kiss, first wag had me falling in love. I made plans to return the next day, and he surprised me by flying home for the adoption.

From the minute she got in the car, Dublin seemed to just know we were her family. She walked into our home with confidence and trust and an attitude of 'I'm home at last'. She has embraced her new life with gusto and has very firmly established her place in our family. She has embraced us equal to our embracing her.

Dublin is simply stunning, in her sweetness and the size of her heart. Where oh where did she come from?? I've asked her to tell me, as yet she hasn't shared her prior journey.

All we know is that this is a happy house again. We are all smiling, laughing and loving. And to say we were thankful to all the wonderful people/friends at Safe Harbor is a huge understatement. We have hit the LOTTO with this precious girl and cannot thank you enough.

As with the story above, many of our adopters report back on how much their Safe Harbor Lab has improved their lives. We would love to hear from you. Share your story today by sending an email to: labgab@safeharborlabrescue.org
