This Month's Featured Labs

Bodhi

Bodhi is a handsome 7 year old yellow Lab who has a zest for life and enjoys everything!
Bodhi was left at a rural shelter by a family who tied him up in the yard and didn't appreciate a Lab's need for companionship and exercise.

Foster Funnies

Here's a note from one of our foster families who have been fostering a pair of our more mature labs. It just goes to show that just because a dog is old doesn't mean they have lost their spunk.

"We have learned to put duct tape on the refrigerator door after we found an empty plate that had a 2 lb meatloaf on it, on the floor, by an open refrigerator door. We are also very cautious about keeping the hutch doors closed after we found a torn and partially empty box of doughnut mix spread all over the floor when the doors were left open. Doesn't take but once and we seem to learn."

Happy Halloween

Hope you and your pup have a safe and fun Halloween.  Please remember to keep the kids' Trick or Treat loot out of reach of the family pets.

Hello Friends of Safe Harbor,

Jacky

Thanksgiving is a time to pause and count our blessings and Safe Harbor truly has much to be thankful for  . . . you, our supporters and volunteers, and our generous professional partners in the community, all

of whom help us save and improve so many Lab lives.

How grateful we are for all our Lab loving friends who have helped us bring peace and joy to so many rescued Labs.

To all of you, our heartfelt thanks.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Adoption Success Story: Winston
Winston went to stay with our medical foster when both she and Winston were recuperating from medical issues. He proved to be a very good guest and a big help around the house, as she related: "Winston comes to the bedroom to assist me with every nap I take. He is such a good boy and a fantastic napper!"

Winston is wide awake and feeling much better now, and has found his dream home with Heidi and Ward, who tend to all his needs. They live an active lifestyle and enjoy many outdoor activities, and
wanted a Lab to share in all their fun. At the beginning of the adoption process they were interested in hearing about all the available Labs, so our adoption team started discussing all the young, active pups who were ready and eager to join them in their wonderful home; but as soon as our special eight-year-old boy, Winston, was mentioned, Heidi knew he was the one. She was not concerned about his age or his ability to keep up - she only cared about his loving personality, and giving him a perfect forever home. Winston now gets to enjoy frequent outdoor adventures, and most importantly, he has a family at home who loves him.

As with the story above, many of our adopters report back on how much their Safe Harbor Lab has improved their lives. Click here or to go tinyurl.com/shlrdonate to make a donation today and help us improve even more lives.
Shindig Report and Photos

A dozen dog-loving musicians donated their time and considerable talent to make our Second Annual Shindig a big success. The turnout was great, and it was another opportunity to introduce folks to our organization and tell them about the work we do. My little foster girl, Tilly, made a special appearance, even napping on the stage during one song.

And of course there was Toby, the much loved SHLR alumni dog. Toby is owned by Kit Simon who generously offered to participate and to host the show again this year at his store, the Olde Town Pickin' Parlor

Thanks to Marlo Mortensen, Thom Sumbler, Kit Simon, Al Mehl, Ann Federowicz, Rich and Wren Zimmerman, Dave Hard, Duffy Keith, Steve Nerney, Linda Gore and Willie Hammond for donating their time and talent as well. Willie donated 100% of the proceeds that night on the sales of her CD Rhythm of Livin'. And last but not least to our wonderful volunteers who helped set things up, mind the door, man the booth and break things down.

A huge shout-out of thanks to all!

Thanks to Safe Harbor's own Leslie Brown for this article and photos, and for all her hard work to make this event happen! That's Leslie on the left in the 2nd picture with foster Tilly sleeping at her feet on stage.

Volunteer Spotlight - Kathy Hollister
"I was looking for something meaningful to do." - (besides being a travel agent planning specialty weddings to Mexico and bookkeeping). Thus began Kathy and Butch Hollister's fostering experience five years ago. Turns out, they wanted to keep every dog they fostered! Cody and Jack joined the family. Then 90 pound Bubba, surrendered at 13+ years old, came aboard, happily living another year. Deciding to stop fostering after Bubba's death, Kathy is now Safe Harbor's Owner Surrender Coordinator.

According to Kathy, an application to surrender and photos are required to initially look at possible aggression and purity of breed. After approval, Kathy transports the precious Labbie from its home to Alameda East vet clinic for a medical work-up prior to joining a welcoming foster family. "Surrendering can be difficult for the owner, but it's good for the dogs."

Kathy, your commitment and innate understanding of animals and people are appreciated by all of us. Many thanks!
