This Month's Featured Labs

Windsor & Riley!

Windsor and Riley are life-long friends looking for a family to call their very own once again. Due to a foreclosure and changed circumstances, these wonderful "fur children" found themselves homeless.

Lab Antics

Star is an athletic Safe Harbor alum-dog. Shortly after I got her, we started Agility training. After observing dogs in competition repeatedly blow the weave poles, I decided we were going to practice extra hard on those, and it was something we could do in the living room all winter.

I got proof of how well she had learned it recently. I had set up a little course in the yard. She flew over the jumps and had a good head of steam when she hit the poles. That was when I noticed my other SHLR dog, Sunny, standing between pole 3 and 4.

It didn't even phase Miss Star - she never slowed down as she wove through the first 3 poles, under Sunny, and through the next 3 poles, as if that was how we had practiced it all winter!

Dogs on the Wall
at Doggie Pause

Would you like to have your Lab featured as part of a beautiful wall mural?

Our wonderful doggie daycare/boarding partner, "Doggie Pause" (doggiepause.com), located in Englewood, has an exquisite wall mural in their large indoor playroom. Each year they hold a drawing during their open house and one dog is chosen to be added to the mural. A portion of the proceeds from the drawing will be donated to Safe Harbor. The open house is Saturday, October 8, 11am - 2pm. It would be pretty awesome if a Safe Harbor Lab won the drawing!

Contact Doggie Pause at doggiepause@comcast.net or 303-761-8743 for details on how to donate $25 to their rescue fund and be entered into the drawing.

Hello Friends of Safe Harbor,

JackyMany thanks to all who joined us for LabFest . . .  it was beautiful day and a great success! Even if you weren't able to make it, I hope you'll take a few minutes to enjoy the article and savor the photos of the fun in this Lab Gab issue. You might just see your Lab in the pool!

The Labs have two really fun events planned for this month: Canvas and Cocktails on October 3rd where you'll get to create a lovely painting with other Lab lovers, and our Second Annual Shindig on October 22 with some of Colorado's best acoustic musicians. Both events will benefit the Labs. Hope you can join us for one or both!

Best wishes,

Jacky

Two Special Safe Harbor Adoptions
Gibson's new family wrote to us recently:
We are so sad that we will not be able to make LabFest. We did want to give you an update on Gibson (Porter). He is a very happy, happy boy. He has gained weight and the Doggie Doctors at Seven Hills are so so happy with the weight gain and the way Gibson looks.

Gibson passed obedience school. He learned two tricks to pass the test. He has become a great dog and great looking dog. He loves to play with Maya, our other rescue. They enjoy wrestling, walking, hiking, water and hanging out. We are so lucky to have Gibson. He makes our lives so much better. You can read him by his big brown eyes and his nonstop tail! He loves to sleep on his back and have his stomach scratched. We want to thank you for letting Gibson become part of our family. We feel like our family is now complete.

Mocha's Success Story:
After the loss of their beloved Ginger last fall, Kathy and Mike missed having a dog around and decided to foster again with SHLR in the spring, with the hope of finding their next family member. Kathy tells us that "Ginger had a VERY big personality and we were looking to fill a very big collar."

They fostered several younger male dogs who quickly found new homes, but knew their preference was for senior females, to fit into their very busy schedules. They had planned not to foster over the summer, but when asked if they could possibly foster 13-year-old Mocha, Kathy and Mike generously agreed to help out. "I guess you could say that was the beginning of our new adventure" writes Kathy.

"In mid-May Mocha, came to us to foster and worked wonderful in our household schedule but she was very reserved and we just didn't connect with her much emotionally. Since that time as her broken heart has mended she's come out of her emotional shell and really blossomed, she skips along on walks off-leash and never wanders when she's outside with us. We were still a bit hesitant, but being a VERY active and spry 13 we were drawn to her.

We finally decided that we would NEVER find "the perfect" dog as we all have issues. Our lives are richer and fuller and we're all healing our broken hearts together, what a perfect way to start a new journey! Thank you SHLR for all that you do!!"

As with the two stories above, many of our adopters report back on how much their Safe Harbor Lab has improved their lives. Click here or to go tinyurl.com/shlrdonate to make a donation today and help us improve even more lives.

LabFest Report and Photos

Close to 200 people enjoyed a beautiful day at LabFest, held at City Bark. But it was really all about the dogs - at least 112 of them (99.2% were Labs), but it was hard to get an accurate count as we couldn't get them to stand still long enough.

Volunteer Spotlight - Madeleine
A Renaissance Woman well describes Madeleine, who has a Fine Arts degree in drawing, is a Denver paralegal, writes the Safe Harbor Success Stories and is a lover of Labbies. She has fostered for two years and said good-bye to her 14th foster a few weeks ago.

Madeleine's Illinois family didn't own a dog, but "I adored my grandfather's dog." Her Colorado family has included a yellow Lab and a Golden Retriever, both of whom lived to the grand old age of 14.

Finn was an 8 week old guy when he was adopted by Madeleine three years ago. Finn loves the fosters, and it sounds like he's the perfect host. Madeleine says she loves watching fosters "come out of their shells"- with yellow Lab Finn's help, of course.

Madeleine continues to be impressed with the number of people who give their time to Safe Harbor. That includes you, Madeleine. Thank you!
