Memorials and Tributes
In Memory of Lincoln
by Polly
After a long and brave journey, Lincoln lost his fight with IMHA. Lincoln wasn't expected to make it past the 24 hour mark when initially diagnosed back in January, but as the vet conceded in those early days, Lincoln was a "special soul" and he continued to amaze every veterinarian professional that he encountered.
If there is one thing Lincoln would ask, it is that you all look into having your healthy dogs donate blood. Not every dog is a candidate, but if your dog is, a simple act of donating blood could save, or in Lincoln's case, extend a sweet dog's life.
Visit our Memorials and Tributes web page and consider making a donation to Safe Harbor in honor of a special person or dog in your life.

Hello Friends of Safe Harbor,
Jacky has been working extra hard this summer for Safe Harbor so we've asked one of our incredibly talented dogs senior dogs, Jessa, to write this article.
Woof woof woof. It's Lab Fest Time! Read on for more information about Lab Fest as well as one of our October events - Canvas and Cocktails. Your support of our events and your generous donations have enabled us to rescue 211 dogs with a variety of health issues and turn around and place 200 healthy dogs so far this year. Bring your camera to LabFest and keep your eyes open for award winning photo opportunities. Now's the time to buy your 2012 Safe Harbor calendar and any time is the right time to snap those winning photos for the next calendar. My foster mom thinks I'm pretty photogenic - I can't help but agree! Don't forget to check out the dogs available for adoption on our web site, including yours truly! See you at LabFest! |

LABFEST - The Party of the Year and Our Major Annual Fundraiser is Almost Here!
The countdown has begun to the event the Labs and their human buddies look forward to all year . . LabFest! Think: Labs swimming and playing to their heart's content while Lab lovers enjoy a picnic lunch including ice cold Laughing Lab beer. Pick up a copy of the new 2011 SHLR Calendar or exclusive Doggie Treat Cook Book (be among the first ten people to purchase $60 of SHLR merchandise and get a free $5 Starbucks card too!) Then browse the terrific Silent Auction items. An afternoon for a Lab and Lab lover just doesn't get any better than this! Register today by clicking here! The Labs have put their retrieving skills to work to fetch some really terrific items for the Silent Auction. Click here for a peek at what they gathered from the community and local businesses for you to bid on. Things like a stay at The Ritz Carleton-Bachelor Gulch, The Molly Gibson Lodge in Aspen or the Four Seasons Resort in Denver. They've rounded up gift certificates for dinners out, baskets of dog goodies, a cushy Lab sized bed overflowing with everything a Lab could want, a mani-pedi, a professional team who will come clean your home, a DirecTV system, gift certificates from our professional training and behavior partners . . . and that's just scratching the surface of the two dozen or so items!
All the proceeds from the LabFest Silent Auction, as well as all proceeds from LabFest, go to help our rescued Labs whose medical expenses exceed $100,000 a year. Hope to see you there on September 10th from 12-3 PM!
If you won't be able to join us, please consider supporting the event with a gift for the Labs. |

A Young Taekwondo Black Belt Candidate Helps Our Rescued Labs
After four years of dedicated training, ten year old fifth grader Mat is preparing for his Black Belt in Taekwondo. Part of his preparation is a community service project.
Mat's family adopted Charlie from Safe Harbor a few years ago and Charlie and Mat are best buddies. Because he loves Charlie so much, he chose to collect donations for Safe Harbor to help other rescued Labs. Putting his ingenuity to work, Mat collected donations totaling $205.29 in exchange for big, incredibly delicious smelling, bone-shaped homemade dog biscuits!
Mat, a dedicated and thoughtful young man, is truly an inspiration to us all. The Labs and all of us at Safe Harbor send a huge Thank You to Mat!

Canvas and Cocktails in Cherry Creek - A Fun and Creative Evening to Help the Labs!
The Labs want you to know you'll love this event whether you find drawing a stick person a challenge or you're artistic by nature! All you need are opposable thumbs and to enjoy getting together with other Lab lovers to help our rescued Labs. So save the date: Monday, October 3rd, at 6:30 pm.
All materials are supplied and the good-natured instructor will guide us step by step in recreating the featured painting, the beautiful "Sunset in Venice".
It's easy, fun, and totally stress free. By the end of the evening you'll be pawsitively amazed at the masterpiece you've created for yourself or as a gift for a friend. One of our self-professed "artistically challenged" volunteers who participated in a previous event told us: "When I showed my painting to my husband, he actually asked me if I bought it at the event!"
Space is limited so register today. When you call, please be sure to mention Safe Harbor so the folks there know you are participating in our fundraiser. The Labs sigh, "If only we had opposable thumbs, we'd be there too!"

Adoption Success Story - Ben (fka Orion)
After some critical days in the hospital recovering from a massive infection caused by a wound, Ben (who was named Orion) is in his forever home with Judith and Greg with acres of land for him to explore with his canine siblings.
Judith writes: "Not only is Ben healthy now after many rounds of strong antibiotics and happy, he has turned out to be one of the funniest, goofiest dogs we have had the pleasure of sharing our lives with.
"He began coming out of his shell almost immediately once he felt better and now has his own Ben routine, which includes sleeping sprawled on the bed (in the middle of course). He plays with cookies when you give them to him, tossing them to himself and finally, after they are good and soggy, eats them. He dotes on his "sister-soul mate" Ellie and the two can be found sharing the couch at snooze time. Now Ellie and Ben are nearly inseparable, and as with other famous stars have earned the nickname "BenEllie".
"He is a great dog, big personality, completely loving and goofy as the day is long. He looks good, is up to about 60 pounds (+15 from when we got him), loves the water and loves to run. He dotes on his dad, but will cuddle with his mom, and is attentive and friendly to the other dogs and the cat.
"One more funny story: He is a really good boy about doing his business outside. He goes and stands at the door when he needs out, but it is a big, new to him house, so Greg had to laugh the other day when he came into the living room and found Ben standing at a closet door, staring expectantly...
"Thanks for making life with Ben possible...we will send you updates from time to time...hopefully for a very long time!"

Volunteer Spotlight - Peg Newell
From Pomeranians to Labs!
Peg's family in Winston-Salem included Pomeranians, but 2006 brought Safe Harbor volunteering - Hooray! - fostering Labbies with medical problems and then transporting. Currently she assists our Treasurer and also develops our pups' medical certificates. Those certificates are a valuable part of every Safe Harbor adoption.
Formerly a CPA, Peg recently retired as pastor at First United Methodist Church in Aurora and continues her work for immigration justice through "Justice for Our Neighbors." She is widowed, has two sons and 3 grandchildren in the Denver area.
Immediate family are beautiful black Layla, age 6, a "puppy mill mom" and Chaco, a 10 year old chocolate. Peg fostered Layla and, yes, became a foster failure.
We are so fortunate to have you in our Safe Harbor family, Peg. Thank you from the bottom of every Labbie's heart - and ours!
