Happy 4th of July
Every 4th of July, many dogs end up in shelters, having run away after being frightened by noisy fireworks. Be sure your Lab has proper identification tags on his collar with your current information, and make sure the information can still be read. The engraving on the tags can get worn over time. Keep your microchip registration current as well.

Hello Friends of Safe Harbor,
Happy Summer! With the warmer weather, it's a great time to be out and about with your Lab, but be sure to remember lots of water -- for drinking and splashing -- and to never leave your best friend in the car that all too quickly can become an oven.
This is also a great time to volunteer to help the Labs and Safe Harbor. Foster homes are always needed in the busy summer months. LabFest, our biggest fund raiser, will be here before you know it and there's lots to do to get ready. A road trip to pick up a rescued Lab is rewarding in any season. And what could be more fun than helping with an adoption! Click here to volunteer.

Lacey's Story - A Lab Surrounded by Guardian Angels
On her way home from work, a vet tech from Alameda East Veterinary Hospital found a young Chocolate Lab in shock laying by the side of the road. She had been hit by a car. The vet tech got her to the hospital where she was stabilized in ICU and diagnosed with a hip dislocated in two places, a pelvis fractured in several places and multiple broken teeth. When her owner was finally located, he decided to sign her over to the hospital to be euthanized because he could not afford her care. A delay in his arrival at the hospital to sign relinquishment paperwork gave Lacey's guardian angel time to work a miracle.
Katie and Jeremy were visiting their Lab recovering from surgery, when they saw Lacey and fell in love with her gentle and sweet nature in spite of her traumatic, painful injuries. Our vet put them in touch with us and thanks to their very generous donation to sponsor her care, we were able to work with the expert doctors and staff at Alameda East to save Lacey.
Lacey was fostered by our own guardian angel in disguise as our "nurse on call", Carol, and her husband Kirk. They patiently and lovingly nurtured Lacey during her long recovery.
While in their care, a chance meeting at a neighbor's introduced Lacey to her future adopters, Jerry and Dale, who wanted to adopt Lacey and give her the wonderful forever home she had been waiting for and so very much deserved.
Lacey is now at home with Jerry and Dale, fully recovered and enjoying the good life of a Lab. She even has her very own swimming pool and a couple videos on YouTube. Click here to see the video of Lacey. Your donations make a world of difference to Labs like Lacey.

LABFEST 2011 -- Newsflash: Labs Looking for Corporate Sponsorships!
As a Safe Harbor supporter, we would like to encourage you to invite your employer to partner with us in our efforts to rescue the Labs by joining us as a sponsor of LabFest 2011.
We plan to rescue about 300 Labs this year. To raise funds for their medical expenses, our single greatest expense, we will have our largest fundraiser of the year, LabFest 2011, on Saturday, September 10th at City Bark in Denver. Last year there were more than 200 attendees and over 100 happy dogs.
Sponsors will enjoy publicity at this tremendously fun and much anticipated annual event for Lab lovers. All sponsors will be recognized in the promotional materials at LabFest 2011. Sponsors of $250.00 or greater will also be recognized on our website that receives over 15,000 visits per month.
To make LabFest another successful fundraiser, the Labs would love your help in asking your employer to sponsor the event to help them. Please do invite your employer to join us too!
For more information, please contact Lucy, our Treasurer, at donate@safeharborlabrescue.org.

Volunteer Spotlight - Cress and Susannah Hart

Cress and his wife, Susannah, fostered 7 Safe Harbor Labs, but as Cress says, "I'm the kind of person who wants to keep them all" - so, on to transporting, background checks, and visits with "forever families". In addition to his Safe Harbor work, Cress has many interests - piloting a plane, traveling, spending time with their grandchildren, and working part-time in Susannah's company. After losing their Lab at age 15, Susannah found our website and fell in love with Tucker - beginning a journey of teaching him to play and become affectionate. Bear, a Wyoming transplant, soon became Tucker's close companion. At the moment they are with Cress, running the woods and swimming the lakes in Minnesota. What a life! Cress believes there's "a common spirit, mindset, and philosophy in the people connected with Safe Harbor. I feel so blessed." And, Safe Harbor is blessed to have you and Susannah, Cress.

May/June Events Report
Many thanks to all SHLR volunteers who helped at our recent publicity events. We had a busy booth at the Counselors for Critters Adoption Event at Petco in Golden. We also had a booth at the 4th Annual Wellington Pet Dog Show, sponsored by Mountain West Pet Shows. Special thanks to Sue and Charles Mayhugh, coordinators of the show, for their donation to Safe Harbor and for including us in the event. Yappy Hour was sponsored by City Bark for the benefit of Safe Harbor Lab Rescue and Big Dogs Huge Paws. We had a great turn-out and the dogs enjoyed the swimming pool. Thank you to all sponsors and volunteers, and to all supporters who attended these events.
