Hello Friends of Safe Harbor,
We hope you'll join us on May 30 for an evening of great music with the renowned and very personable musician Bill Staines. We're honored he's taken time from his busy touring schedule to play for the benefit of Safe Harbor's Labs. All proceeds from this delightful small venue concert will help with the medical costs our rescued Labs.
I'm delighted to let you know that Drake, who was featured in last month's edition, has found his forever home with his foster mom who fell in love with him. A very warm thank you for the many good wishes you sent his way.
A quick reminder: Spring is great time to get some photos of your wonderful Lab for the 2012 Calendar Photo Contest - deadline is May 15th! Best Regards, Jacky PresidentSafe Harbor Lab Rescue |

Poncho - Your Donations Make a Difference
Two year old Poncho, is a gentle soul who was abandoned at a rural shelter. A Good Samaritan told us he was very sad and quiet there. Not only was he was frightened and trembling when our volunteer brought him to us, but his eyes were red and uncomfortable looking.
Our vet found that Poncho had bilateral entropion, a painful condition where both eyelids roll inward and constantly irritate the cornea and inflame the surface of the eye. He recently had surgery to correct this condition and recovered for several weeks in his foster home. We're happy to report he no longer has to suffer in silence and is a much happier Lab who is looking forward to his forever home. The medical costs for the care of rescued Labs greatly exceed their adoption fees. Your help with these medical costs to ease their pain and suffering before they go to their forever homes is greatly appreciated. Click here to donate today.

Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by clicking here. If you haven't heard Bill perform, click here for a great YouTube video of the title song "Old Dogs". Space is limited and a third of the tickets are sold already. Order yours today! Your help is needed. A bake sale to benefit Safe Harbor will be held at the concert. Contact Tia at 951-201-4618 if you can contribute baked goods. |

Featured Adoption - Bubba
Bubba was all smiles when he met Mike and Nancy, their children Taylor and Morgan, and their black Lab, Mia. He proudly showed them his proficiency in the art of fetching tennis balls, and romped around with Mia. The entire family fell in love with him right away, and the decision was quickly made that Bubba should join the family. Mia will enjoy having a playmate to keep her company, and Bubba will soon become a soccer fan as he roots for Taylor and Morgan from the sidelines at their soccer games. This handsome, six-year-old yellow boy was very excited to join his new family, and insisted on holding his trademark tennis ball during the adoption photo shoot. As the new family headed home together, Bubba happily woofed "let the games begin"! Read more success stories on our Success Stories web page.

Volunteer Spotlight - Melody Sattizahn
Melody, a Colorado native, became involved with Safe Harbor three years ago and has, so far, fostered 23 Labs. Currently, she and her husband, Rich, their 2 teenage sons, and Yellow Lab Jake are fostering Poncho in his recovery from eyelid surgery (see story above). Melody and Rich are travel agents running their own business, Centennial Travel; Melody works from home, balancing her job with Safe Harbor duties. Melody coordinates the Safe Harbor Hotline, setting up the on-call schedule for six volunteers. (By the way, the Hotline could use a few more volunteers.) Melody also heads up the Microchip program which requires "lots of paperwork" as Safe Harbor registers every adopted dog and their new family with the appropriate microchip vendor. And, of course, she provides that necessary love, care, and "family" to the Labbies waiting for their "forever families". Melody, you called Safe Harbor "such a good organization" with volunteers who give many hours to the rescue and placement of Labs, young and old. You are one of those committed volunteers, you know.

I Rescued A Human Today - by Janine Allen
Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them. As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life. She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well. Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms. I would promise to keep her safe. I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes. I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one. I rescued a human today.
