Build-A-Bear Foundation Honors SHLR with Grant
In January Safe Harbor Lab Rescue was awarded a grant of $1500 from the Build-A-Bear Workshop Bear Hugs Foundation. The grant was awarded to help with the medical care of our rescued Labs. Those of you who read Lab Gab and who visit our website know that many of our Labs come to us in need of medical care above and beyond a general check-up. This grant will be put to use to help our special needs Labs. Please visit the Build-A-Bear website and read about this wonderful company that has given back to the community in so many ways: www.buildabear.com

The 2012 Calendar Contest Is Open!

This year's calendar contest begins now and runs through May 15th. And with Colorado weather being as unpredictable as it is, you just may get the opportunity for a picture with a snowman AND one of a sunny lake swim!
Your Lab doesn't need to have been rescued to be entered. Simply visit our website for all the details and if you have any questions, please email or call Margo at grboyer@qwest.net, 303-579-9181.
Twelve winners will be selected and the top winter themed photo might grace our holiday card.
This is a great fundraiser for SHLR so please plan to submit your photos!

In loving memory of Mason, devoted companion to SHLR volunteer TIm Miller and wonderful inspiration to us all. After being diagnosed with a heart condition, Mason was given only 6 months to live. That was 7 years ago!

Hello Friends of Safe Harbor,
We hope you'll enjoy this month's Lab Gab with your favorite canine companion curled up at your feet. The happily-ever-after-story of Luke who came to us at a whopping 160 pounds last summer is especially heartwarming. As the number of Labs we're called upon to rescue steadily increases -- almost 60 for the first two months this year alone -- we greatly need foster homes as a "safe harbor" for these dogs awaiting their adoption day. Opening your home and heart to a foster for a few weeks is a wonderfully rewarding way to help save a Lab's life. Hope you'll give it some thought. The 2012 Calendar Photo Contest is underway now so have your camera ready to catch your best friend's most winning pose! Best Regards, Jacky PresidentSafe Harbor Lab Rescue |

Success Story - Luke, Our Biggest Loser
Prior to his arrival at SHLR, eight-year-old Luke weighed in at 160 lbs. Now, thanks to the diligent care of his foster mom (and canine foster siblings) he is sporting a healthy 96.5 lbs. Luke has now found his forever home with dad, Butch, and new Golden Retriever siblings, Dooley and Sarah. Butch was looking for a dog who would enjoy riding in the truck, and accompanying him into Petsmart and on other errands. Dooley and Sarah don't like riding in the car, so Luke will be in heaven as the official car dog! When he's not out driving around, Luke will spend his time lounging in the house or in his large fenced yard when Butch is away, or with Butch as his work allows. He will also enjoy daily walks around their rural neighborhood, which is inundated with bunnies. Luke was happy to hear that he will get to go back for visits to his foster home, and can also continue swimming with his former foster siblings, Spree and Dexter, at the pool near his new home. Butch is dedicated to keeping Luke at his current ideal weight, and has already purchased several giant cans of green beans. Lucky Luke will be a treasured member of his forever family, and the king of the car when he rides shotgun with his new dad. A huge thank you to Connie for taking such great care of Luke and getting him down to his goal weight!

SHLR Makes Matches and Gets Matched!
Every day of every year, SHLR works tirelessly to match the right dogs with the right adoptive families. All of SHLR's heartwarming successes would not be possible without the generosity of our volunteers and contributors. We'd like to take this opportunity to extend a virtual hug and huge thank you to all of our fabulous 2010 corporate donors: First Data Oppenheimer IBM Pepsico Foundation Abbott Labs Schwab Wells Fargo Western Union Visa NREL Xcel Energy REIT Management & Research CoBank
We would also like to encourage our individual donors to check with their own company's gift-matching policy. Many will match dollar for dollar and SHLR can stretch those dollars pretty far!
Thank you again!

Volunteer Spotlight - Dick Cazier
Dick, and his yellow Lab, Ian (not in photo), moved from their large house to a Meridian facility several months ago and have settled in beautifully according to Dick, who continues to volunteer with Safe Harbor and says his favorite "job" has been as a "foster."
Dick reports that Ian is a "gentle people dog, and... has stolen the hearts of almost all of the residents [at Meridian]. When we are on the patio, he gently trots out to passers-by to greet them quietly and gently. He quickly learned who was afraid of or didn't like dogs and leaves them alone. He's also very careful around people with canes, crutches or walkers... Not a day goes by when at least 1 or 2 of our residents doesn't stop me somewhere and ask "how's Ian doing?" and then spend at least a minute or two talking about how much they love having him here and asking for an update on what he's been doing. With him and my continuing work with Safe Harbor, my senior years are richly blessed."
Dick, who is from Illinois, finished college, served in the Army, then worked for the Forest Service/BLM where he supervised contracts until he retired at age 49. After that he started a consulting business, again working for these government agencies.
His organizational and people skills as well as his "gift for gab" have carried over in his work for Safe Harbor. He was Foster Coordinator for several years and currently keeps track of the annual foster home inspections, compiles monthly foster contact reports, and gathers information on incoming Labbies.
Thanks, Dick, for sharing your story with the Lab Gab. You are a valued volunteer!

Letters from Adopters
SADIE'S FIRST CHRISTMAS
After just passing Sadie's one year adoption anniversary (formerly Addie), I felt inspired to write Safe Harbor for enriching my life so much more. Sadie has been just the most wonderful girl (besides finding the occasional shoe of mine in the back yard!), and has become the perfect playmate and hiking companion for Guinness. They are like two peas from the same pod, they get along so well and always stick together on everything, they are the true epitome of a sibling bond. Sadie has brought so much love and joy into our home, Guinness and I couldn't be happier and are forever grateful to Safe Harbor and the friends that support your wonderful organization. We thank you again so much and will always do our best to help Safe Harbor continue their mission of "Rehoming Labs with Good People". With gratitude, Bob, Guinness, and Sadie _____________________________________________________________ SANDY SEES THE BEST IN ALL
Sandy, a Safe Harbor Lab Rescue with a plethora of minor health issues, has found her forever home. She walks daily around McIntosh Lake and visits Union Reservoir often for a game of retrieval, along with our chocolate lab, Belle. Watching Sandy, you'd never know she is blind. She has opened our eyes and hearts, enabling us to enjoy the simpler things in life and all Sandy asks in return, is to be loved. -Larry and Rebecca ______________________________________________________________ TURK WELCOMES A SISTER
Hi SHLR! I was just looking back and remembering when I adopted my wonderful companion Turk (formally Pal) in late 2003. We've been together almost 7 years and we've been through so much together. He has a new Dad now, Christopher who loves him dearly and has been with us for five years, and a new sister, Flora a wonderful spunky 1 1/2 year old Siberian Husky. We live in a house in Boulder with a big yard and go on trail walks daily as a family. Running, hiking, biking, swimming and playing in the park are our favorite activities. I don't know how I could have lived without Turk, he's so sweet and loving and dedicated to his family. We love him dearly! I've attached some recent photos of our family - thanks again for connecting me to my forever friend!! Love, Leah
