Litter Reunion at LabFest

Safe Harbor has rescued some large litters of puppies in the past year or so. We would love to bring two of these 2009 litters together for a special reunion at LabFest. Details will be sent directly to the families of those litters. We hope you can make it. Our volunteers always love to see the little ones all grown up.

Is it too early to get your 2011 calendar?

Not if it is your Safe Harbor calendar!

This year's calendar is the best yet. The quality of submitted photos improves every year, and our graphics designer added some real fun features this time. Winners will be announced online.

Thanks you to our panel of judges, to our graphics designer, Margo Boyer, and to our printer, Otis Jackson at Custom Products and Sales Inc. The calendar looks awesome!

Calendars will be sold at LabFest, on our web page, and at the following businesses, all in Arvada:

Ramah's Silk Floral and Home Decor
Pet Empawrium and Spaw
Arvada West Vet Hospital
Olde Town Pickin Parlor
K9 Cuts Arvada

Calendars are also available at Canine Rehabilitation and Conditioning Group (CRCG) in Englewood or Broomfield.

The
calendar might not be on the web page when this newsletter goes to print, but please check back during the first week of August for on-line ordering information.

And while you are waiting, visit the Safe Harbor Online Store and check out some of the other items available for purchase on the website.

A portion of sales are donated to Safe Harbor.
Letters from Adopters

Caroline and Keith came to Safe Harbor after they lost their Lab, Toby. Here's the story they shared with us.

As with any unexpected loss, we were grieving deeply, and so was our other Lab, Faithy. When we met Midas, we knew he would be perfect.

Midas is made for cuddles and LOVES to be held at night. It seems now that Midas is with our family that our King size bed is meant for four. "We sleep in a real pile."

Midas is our little ambassador for all Labs. We brought him to a recent Air Force family picnic, and he was surrounded by little kids petting the "sweet puppy". Despite being poked and grabbed, Midas just lay there smiling, as if he understood his role. He is a kind-hearted soul who gives back love ten-fold.

Midas is like so many rescued Labs in that he gives the only thing he has, himself, and he gives it completely with no reservation, just hope of love in return. In our family, that's all we needed to fall completely in love with him.
Midas is quite the charmer and we all feel blessed to have him in our lives.

Special thanks to Caroline and Keith and their whole family who made donations to Safe Harbor last Christmas instead of spending money on gifts for each other.

Dear Friends of Safe Harbor--

These summer months have seen so many Labs in need of rescue all over Colorado, many in need of special care before they can go home forever. My heartfelt thanks to our team of transporters who go the "extra mile" to bring the Labs to safety or chauffeur them around town to appointments, to our intake coordinators and to medical, foster and adoption teams. Safe Harbor truly has a spectacular group of volunteers who work together to make a tremendous difference to each and every Lab we rescue!

Best wishes,

LabFest!

It's only 42 days away! The excitement is building. The organizers are hard at work on the finishing touches and last minute silent auction donations. The day that we work towards all year - Safe Harbor's annual end of summer LabFest.

You and your dog do not want to miss this one of a kind event. Last year we had 115 Labs, and no dog fights! There were a few torn toenails, but with licensed veterinarian staff in attendance for quick repairs, the dogs got right back in the game.

LabFest is held at City Bark, where your dog will enjoy 3 hours of non-stop play. About half of the dogs choose to hang out at the pool, while others play ball non-stop in the play yard. And then there are those who prefer to cruise the cooking area hoping to snag a burger, while some are content to just hang out with their people in the shade. There is something for every dog.

Your Lab does not need to be a Safe Harbor alum - all well behaved Labs are welcome. But our volunteers do especially love to see their old friends again, happy and healthy.

LabFest - It's Not Just For the Dogs

So you are not a Lab. You are a human. You have done the coolest thing a Lab owner can do and delivered your dog to the best Lab Party ever. He's gone off to play with all his Lab buddies, and you won't see him again until it's time to go home.

So what's a dogless dog owner to do at a dog party? Eat, shop and talk about Labs, of course.

Bring your check book - wouldn't it feel good to have half of your Christmas shopping done in September? Of course, we will be selling our 2011 Safe Harbor calenders, always a popular purchase at LabFest, along with other Safe Harbor merchandise. We are also excited to announce the following vendors who will have booths at LabFest:

Lab Designs Embroidery
Homemade Dog Collars
Another activity for the humans is the silent auction. As usual, our auction items are going to be spectacular. Here's a sneak preview of just some of the exciting items that will be in the auction:

Assorted gift baskets (food, wine, dog stuff)
Tickets to Royal Gorge Bridge and Park
Passes to Denver Botanic Garden
Passes to the Denver Zoo
PLUS

A Professional Portrait Session
from Steve Mokan Photography
($200 value)

Veterinary Care from
Tender Touch Animal Hospital
($200 value)

3 Nights in a Condo in Mazatlan!
($700 value)

Safe Harbor Makes Kate's Wish Come True
We had the very special privilege of working with the Make A Wish Foundation to grant young Kate's wish for a female black Lab puppy. Kate, who is being treated for a serious illness, was as thrilled as any little girl can be when she first saw "Emilee" and held her very own puppy in her arms.

When the Make a Wish Foundation contacted us and let us know they would greatly prefer to work with a rescue than a breeder to grant Kate's wish, we were delighted to help. Coincidentally, we had just rescued a litter of puppies with a perfect little black female.

There were lots of smiles and tears at the very memorable Wish Celebration.

Special thanks to Kari Bastyr of Wag and Train for donating training for Emilee and to Lone Tree Vet Clinic for providing the first year of veterinary care. Kudos to Petco for donating a $500 shopping spree!
Volunteer Spotlight - Sue Olson
Seven years ago, Sue adopted a Lab from Safe Harbor and started volunteering. She does transports and has headed up our Hotline team for the past three years. Sue also answers all emails that come into Safe Harbor, an average of five per day.

Sue lives near the Wyoming border and works as a vet technician at Countryside Animal Hospital, where she started after being laid off from the corporate world. Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise.

Her four-legged friends at home "in the country" include 4 cats and 4 dogs, 2 of which are from Safe Harbor. Sammy is a chocolate Lab, blind from birth, who goes to work with Sue every day, and is a registered therapy dog who visits Alzheimers patients. Tucker, featured as the June dog in the 2010 calendar, was 6 when Sue adopted him 5 years ago. Rounding out her dog family are Colby the Golden Retriever and camera-shy Bean.

Sue explained the hotline program to us. Each hotline volunteer covers the phone for a week at a time to pick up messages and route them to the Safe Harbor person best able to respond to the caller - everything from adopting and surrendering a dog to reporting a "found" dog.

Thank you, Sue, for your active participation in the mission of Safe Harbor.

Thank you to our "pup" reporter, Ginny Smith, for the Spotlight articles. Follow this link to find out how you can become a Safe Harbor Volunteer.
