Letters from Adopters
We adopted Chief after one of our other kids was suddenly stricken with cancer and had to be put down. Our other kid Memphis was heartbroken and so with some help from Bonnie and the wonderful folks at Safe Harbor, we adopted Chief.
Chief has settled nicely into his new forever home and he and Memphis get along like he was always here. Chief has turned out to be a mischievous but non-destructive little guy, and we must always "Chief proof" the house whenever we are gone, as he is very adept at getting into things.
He greatly enjoys his walks, especially when Memphis gets to go. He has made many new friends in the other dogs that walk the greenbelt by our house, but seems to really perk up for Bailey and Cinder, his two new best pals.

Lab Antics
Hi Everyone, Sammy and I wanted to show off our new LABRESQ license plates! What do you think? Sammy gives it a "2 paws up." Because, as he has, "I don't have thumbs!"

Hello Friends of Safe Harbor -
We've rescued an amazing 87 Labs and adopted out 90 so far this year, something we could never have done without such a wonderful group of supporters like all of you! It takes a lot of human and financial resources to help these Labs and we very much appreciate all the ways you contribute to help us save so many lives.
An urgent and ongoing need is foster homes for our rescued Labs. We hope you'll consider joining our foster team and enjoy the rewards of providing a "safe harbor" in your home by helping a homeless Lab leave shelter life behind.
With Spring upon us, hope you can get out and enjoy these warmer days with a four footed buddy. And while you're at it, take some pictures of that handsome guy or pretty gal to enter into our calendar photo contest - the May 15th deadline is coming up soon.
Warm regards,
Jacky President Safe Harbor Lab Rescue

Olde Town Pickin' Parlor Welcomes New Greeter
A Good Samaritan found Bruce limping and shivering in pain after he'd been hit by a car. His owners were found, but turned their back on him. The Good Sam called us and the next morning he buckled his two babies in the minivan, carefully picked up 85 pound Bruce and placed him in the back and then drove two hours to meet us. In spite of intense pain, Bruce still gently wagged his tail and wanted to greet everyone, but could barely move from his blanket. Hospital staff carefully placed him on a gurney and wheeled him inside. Bruce was immediately examined by orthopedic specialists at Alameda East Veterinary Hospital. They found his leg was shattered -- broken in six places including through the ball of the femur -- and could not be salvaged. While Bruce lost his leg, he still has his whole life ahead of him; the dog he was running with lost his life in the accident. Bruce recovered quickly with Connie Fredman, an expert medical foster experienced in caring for recovering amputees. In less than a month, Bruce found his forever home with Kit, owner of Olde Town Pickin' Parlor, a music store in Arvada, and his daughter Danni. Bruce, now called Toby, has a new lease on life not only as a loved Lab, but as the official store greeter with a smile and a wag for all who enter. As with people, Bruce's emergency care and surgery were costly. Click here if you would like to help with Bruce's medical expenses. Read more about Bruce's adoption on our Success Stories page.

Canvas and Cocktails Event is a Big Success
Safe Harbor Lab Rescue volunteers and supporters had tons of fun painting and partying during our Spring Fundraising Event at Canvas and Cocktails in March, making it a huge success! Over 45 SHLR supporters attended the painting class, hosted by Canvas and Cocktails, and proceeds from the registration, SHLR and Canvas and Cocktails merchandise sales, and raffle amounted to nearly $700! The SHLR Operations Team immediately put that money to work to rescue and vet many lucky Labradors. A huge thank you to all of our generous supporters and to Brittney and the wonderful staff at Canvas and Cocktails.

Volunteer Spotlight - Betsy
"I was always a cat person!" Not any more. Betsy's cousin told her about Safe Harbor when he adopted a chocolate Lab, and Betsy, in turn, couldn't resist doing the same! So, into her life came Maggie May, a whirlwind of a pup that Betsy says was a BIG challenge. Then, Betsy became interested (gently persuaded, perhaps?) in fostering. Over the past two years she's transported at times and fostered ten or so dogs, all for short periods of time; but then young, mellow Johnny came into her life. Johnny had orthopedic injuries requiring many months of nursing care and attention, even to the extent of using a belly sling to take him into her back yard for toileting. Johnny is now with his "forever family", and Betsy is taking a break from fostering for a very good reason - she has a new grandchild and is caring for him much of the time. Do come back to fostering, Betsy, when that youngest grandbaby is ready to join with the other grandkids in playing with our furry friends! You have been an unselfish, caring, and loving volunteer, and we are proud to put you in our "Spotlight"! Follow this link to find out how you can become a Safe Harbor Volunteer.
