Dash the Wonder Dog
We continue to follow the story of former stray and Safe Harbor alum-dog Dash. Certified as a Therapy Dog one year ago, he continues to rack up the ribbons and touch lives. Keep up the good work, Dash!
We love to hear about our alumni - send pictures and stories to labgab@safeharborlabrescue.org.

Lab Antics
Here's another chance for you, the reader, to contribute to Lab Gab! Click here to send your funny lab stories to the editor.
My Lily, shown above listening to her favorite song, Who Let The Dogs Out, was one of those ball-obsessed labs, and a smart little cookie too! One morning she went out in our yard in California, when the new plums on the plum tree were just the perfect shade of light green, and picked herself a new tennis ball from the tennis ball tree! We played with that ball until it was pretty beat up, but the next day and the next, she just picked another ball off her personal tennis ball tree.

Hello Friends of Safe Harbor -
With your help we've rescued a record 255 Labs this year and still have a busy month ahead of us! Safe Harbor's committed role in the guardianship and level of care for this unparalleled breed sets us apart and gives us great pride. Every Lab we rescue is vaccinated, microchipped, spayed/neutered, and their pain or illness is alleviated by our top notch vet partners; each is lovingly fostered, allowing us to get to know them so we can find just the right forever home. This is an enormous undertaking for our all-volunteer rescue. Lab lovers know Labs have their share of health issues; the number of abandoned Labs coming to us with substantive, expensive medical needs has been astonishing. Medical costs make up the vast majority of our expenses, 96% of which go directly to serve the Labs.We hope you'll share in caring for our rescued Labs by including Safe Harbor, a 501(c)(3) organization, in your year-end giving plans. Together we can make such a difference for these wonderful Labs who truly deserve a second chance.Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday Season! Thank You to RE/MAX International, Inc.
RE/MAX International, Inc. named Safe Harbor Lab Rescue as a recipient for their in-office donation drive which was spearheaded by RE/MAX employees Jennifer Castro and John Chinello. Generous RE/MAX International employees donated doggie drool-inducing treats and chews, squeaky toys, tug-o-war ropes, Kongs (a Labrador's most favorite toy!), and puppy pads used for housetraining. These delightful gifts will be given to our foster families so they can offer some stress-relieving entertainment and special treats to our labs who may have just come from inhumane situations or been stressed in a shelter environment. The puppy training pads will be sent directly to our foster family currently fostering a Labrador mom and seven newborn puppies!! A huge thank you to RE/MAX International from Safe Harbor for such a generous donation!!!

Trigger's Story
We all know the story. Dog is dropped off at shelter with note from the old owner: "no time for dog", "kids are allergic", etc. No matter what the reason, the bottom line is a nice dog is left baffled and confused. He has no choice but to settle down on the cement floor of a run in a crowded, noisy shelter -- to wait. In Trigger's case, he was abandoned by his owner because: "He just sets in the yard, chained to a tree; he's old and blind in one eye and no one plays with him." Optimistic and trusting, Trigger is 7-8 years old and blind in his right eye, which was blood red and bulging -- not a good candidate for adoption from a shelter, even though he had a wonderful temperament. At Safe Harbor, Trigger was diagnosed with advanced glaucoma in his eye, a condition that our ophthalmologist says feels like a constant migraine headache. Trigger underwent surgery to remove the painful eye and several masses noticed by our vet. Surgery went very well; he was a good-natured patient and got back on his paws quickly. Smooth sailing after that? Unfortunately, no. Trigger also tested positive for heartworm and is being treated for this life-threatening condition. Trigger's medical care is very expensive as you can imagine. We feel strongly that he is a great Lab who deserves a second chance, a chance that your donations help make a reality. Success Story - Annie and Nikkie
Next to the seniors, the hardest dogs for us to place are the pairs of labs that come in together, since we never want to break up life-long pals. Combine those two scenarios, and we have a real special challenge. These two pretty girls grew up together, and are now at their forever home with Lynnda and Frank. Annie and Nikki are said to be 11 years old, but their energy level and good condition make them appear much younger. Lynnda sent us an update after the girls had settled in: " The girls and I went to meet and greet their new vet yesterday. Everyone had to come out to admire them. Nikki and Annie were little ladies. They each had new pink collars and pink leashes - I felt like a new mom of twins dressing them in matching outfits. Other than recommending we increase their kibble a little, the vet said they checked out perfectly!!!"Nikki still hasn't done stairs, but is content to sleep on the sofa. Annie has found her place on our bed with Muffin. (On the application I did say "...deluxe sleeping accomodations"!) "We are SOOOOOO happy we found them through your website and that you allowed us to adopt them. The girls are happy, they LOVE Frank especially, are gentle with Muffin, remind us of our Charlee, yet are different at the same time, and did I mention they are happy and we are happier still. We just love them. Double the fun!! (I could go on and on, but you get the picture!)" It's a wonderful new beginning for this adorable duo and we're so happy they've found such a loving home. A billion thanks to Lynnda and Frank for being willing to adopt not just one, but two, senior labs.

Volunteer Spotlight - Katie and Heath
In their first year of volunteering for Safe Harbor, Katie and Heath have done a little bit of everything. They started out doing reference checks and facilitating adoptions. They fostered a few dogs and took others out for walks, and helped with LabFest and transportation. Katie has also been doing our medical certificates for a while now. We are very grateful for everything they have done for the labs of Safe Harbor in 2009. They are shown here with their own lab, Kona.

Dr. Temple Grandin Featured Speaker at ABRN Fund Raiser
Support All Breed Rescue Network, Inc and hear Dr. Temple Grandin, well known teacher, speaker and author of "Animals Make Us Human". Grandin answers the question: What does an animal need to have a
good life - for them? She builds on past work to explain how to give
our animals the best and happiest life -- on their terms, not ours. She teaches us to challenge our assumptions about animal contentment and
honor our bond with our fellow creatures by understanding the "core
emotion system" they share with humans. Saturday, December 12, 2009 1 pm to 4 pm
