Your Donations make a Difference!
Eight week old Piper, a tiny stray abandoned at a shelter, came to us a very sick puppy. Chest x-rays showed a severe case of pneumonia. Feverish, lethargic and racked with coughing spasms that utterly exhausted him, he needed round the clock care by his foster mom. With expert veterinary care including special fluids, monitoring and medications, Piper is doing much better. Your donation to help with expensive life-saving medical care makes all the difference in giving Labs like little Piper a second chance.
Your donation to help Piper and the other Labs in need is always very much appreciated.

Success Story ~ Honey
Every once in a while a dog comes along that touches so many lives and hearts. Our sweet Honey is one of those special pups. At 7 weeks old, she and her six siblings were tossed out of a speeding truck, and she was the only survivor. This lucky girl somehow made it to SHLR, and she has now found her loving home in Glenwood Springs with Dean and Wendy. If Wendy is not home, Honey will enjoy going to work with Dean, and taking many walks to the river and around town. There are so many people to thank on Honey's behalf! From the kind soul who found her and took her to the veterinary clinic, to the wonderful people at the American Humane Association who provided funds for her care through a Second Chance Grant and the Coalition for Animal Rescue and Education, (C.A.R.E) who looked after Honey before she arrived at Safe Harbor. A special thanks to all involved in getting her to SHLR where she found her happily ever after.

Spotlight on Ben and Lisa Asimovic, Foster Parents After they purchased their home, Ben and Lisa Acimovic were ready to add a Lab or two to their lives and chose Safe Harbor to help. It wasn't long before "Savannah Smiles" joined them; soon the family grew to four as they welcomed "Yukon Gold". After giving a lot of thought to adding another Lab, this past spring Ben and Lisa decided to start fostering instead. "We quickly got our first foster and haven't looked back!" says Lisa. "We've both enjoyed fostering the dogs we've had - Spooner, Humphrey and Dustin -- because each came to us with a challenging background. Through medical issues, allergies, a fear of stairs and rough puppy-hoods, we worked hard with each of them to make sure they knew their basic commands and good doggie manners before they went to their forever homes." Ben and Lisa are wonderful fosters who go above and beyond in so many ways. They train their foster Labs in a gentle and positive way. They have taken challenging dogs and have brought them far enough along to make them very adoptable. Theirs is a unique situation as Ben (a civil engineer) and Lisa (a recent college graduate and police dispatcher) have different work hours, so one of them is at home most of the time, making it a great foster home to place dogs that have less than fortunate backgrounds. How grateful we and the Labs are to have Lisa and Ben as foster parents! |

| LAB ANTICS by Kara Karsten
Sue wrote to us:
Dear Safe Harbor,
Meet Truman, who came to me from SHLR in December 2008. My life has been full of smiles ever since. He's polite: when his snoring gets to be too much during the night, he excuses himself and moves to the guest room. But at first light, I call out: "Tru-Man.front and center!" and he barrels into my room, leaps onto the bed and lavishes me with every ounce of affection he has. If I say "closer" he crawls on his belly to snuggle as close to me as he can get, puts his head on my shoulder and sighs that wonderful sigh of puppy contentment. He's the consummate host. I was working from home one day last week when the doorbell rang. A gardener who was working down the street had found a lost dog and wondered if I knew where she lived. I said no, but I'd take her for the afternoon and see that she found her home. I looked at Truman. His head was larger than the entire lost dog. He took one look at her - scared and worried - and showed her to his back yard. They ran around and played for a good 90 minutes. The owner eventually came by and everyone was happy. Everyone except Truman. He was sad to see his friend go. Mark Twain said: "The dog is a gentleman; I hope to go to his heaven, not man's." I'm with Mr. Twain.
