Hello Friends of Safe Harbor,JackywithShiraz

We are already off to a busy start this year with intakes and adoptions.  With troubled economic times, our Labs can be comforting friends, but for others it means being uncared for and left behind.  With your much appreciated support, we'll be here to help as many of these abandoned Labs as we can find truly forever homes as treasured companions.

Best Regards

Happy New Year everyone! I thought you all would get a kick out of seeing how much I've grown since I was adopted into my new home! This is a picture of me opening Xmas gifts! After I had been home a few days, and my new Mom and Dad had been kicking around some names, they decided on Jetson because of my beautiful jet black coat. Of course, I have many nicknames, some of the favorites being Jetty, JetMan, Smarty Pants and "The Black Marley". I'll let you figure that one out! (It involves Dad's glasses...) Ha! I love it here! I watch the deer walk by the sliding glass door while Mom and Dad work. I had a blast running in the forest while we were cutting down our Xmas tree! I love riding in the car everywhere my pack goes. My cousin Jackson comes over all the time and we play and play, wrestling and chasing each other all over until we are so tired that we fall into a deep sleep. The only thing I'm not so keen on in my new life is getting neutered in a few weeks, but Mom says it's necessary, so I reluctantly said OK. I love Dr. Van. She gives out cookies! Thanks, Safe Harbor, for taking care of me until I found my forever home! Love, Jetty

Trainer's Corner ~ Leash "Aggression" Do's and Don't's by Kari Bastyr

Many of us have seen it ~ A Lab who is wonderful with his dog buddies off-leash ~ around the house, playdates.  But attach a leash to his collar and our mild-mannered Lab turns into a whirling dervish any time he encounters another dog on his walk.

Kari Bastyr, one of our wonderful trainer/behaviorists explains the reasons behind this behavior and how to work with your Lab to make leashed walks enjoyable for him and for you.  Click here to read her article:

Volunteer Spotlight - Tracie Barnes

Ever wonder how so many people know about Safe Harbor and our wonderful Labs?  We couldn't get the word out without our incredible website www.safeharborlabrescue.org   And the person who makes it all possible is Tracie Barnes!  She generously donates her time and talent as a professional web developer and designer to make our web site beautiful, timely and easy to navigate.

Tracie left "corporate life" to work with her husband, Dave, in developing their own company, "Marketing Tactics".  Tracie is a huge animal lover and been a mom to quite a variety of critters including an alligator and a Lab.  Currently two cats, Gizmo and Guinness, live with the Barnes.  With her love of animals Tracie couldn't resist the opportunity to put her talents to work for the rescued Labs when asked to design our web site. That was in 2003 and she's been our volunteer webmaster ever since!

Tracie tells us: "Safe Harbor is my favorite web site to work on - an absolute labor of love.  I enjoy reading about all the wonderful Labs who are so loved by all the volunteers and often shed a tear over the stories about animals who have been abused or neglected.  I'm in total awe of what everyone does at Safe Harbor - bringing in, taking care of and finding forever homes for dogs who might not otherwise have a second chance."

We are grateful beyond words for all Tracie does for the Labs!

The Love of a Senior Lab by Julie BrookinsSeniorLabs

Julie and Frank with senior Labs, Jag and Mason (formerly named Henry)

People ask me, "Why would you want to adopt a senior Lab?  You will have to let her go in such a short time!"

There is so much more to a senior Lab than that.

Taking in an older Lab involves patience, love and understanding.  Since we rarely know much of their past, we can't rush things. We need to be patient and learn what scares or upsets them; what delights and comforts them.  Senior Labs usually adapt to their new homes and family members ~ human and animals ~ with little or no fuss.  Some adapt overnight while others may take a little longer. The first day you see that senior start to relax, you know the world has changed somehow.

We have adopted 2 senior labs so far and nothing will ever replace the joy we felt when they realized they were in their forever home at last. It is so fun to see their personalities emerge. To watch them run, play with toys, sleep in a comfy bed... best of all, seniors are housetrained and past the chewing stage!

Making the decision to adopt a senior Lab has become an easy one for us. They are the best example we have found for why we open our hearts and homes to a rescued Lab in the first place. These wonderful dogs sometimes find themselves near the end of their lives with nowhere to go.  I like to think that by taking in one of these special Labs I have contributed in some small way to giving that Lab the best days of his or her life.

LETTERS TO THE EDITORS

Okay, I know I say this every time, but I seriously loved this (January) issue.  Special Owen so deserved to have his story known, so thank you for putting in the effort to provide it in this newsletter.  I still remember transporting him from the western slope and the continual barrage of cute but painful puppy bites.  (Note to self: find a crate for transporting.)  I also appreciated the review of our fundraising activities in 2008.  We had so many dedicated people volunteer for events and their hard work made the fundraising coordinator's job so much easier.  Sometimes as an insider you don't realize how much is truly accomplished on a day to day (or event to event) basis.  Thank you for highlighting our efforts and a huge thank you to Judy Funk for running our biggest fundraiser of 2008 (Labfest, of course)!

Tiffany
