DR. SCOTT CARPENTER - CVMA VETERINARIAN OF THE YEAR!

Our very own Dr. Scott Carpenter was recently named Veterinarian of the year by the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association.

Each year the CVMA recognizes a distinguished member who has contributed to the advancement of veterinary medicine in the State of Colorado in the areas of organization, education, research, practice or regulatory service.

This prestigious award could not have been given to a more deserving vet.  Dr. Carpenter has been with Safe Harbor Lab Rescue since its inception and has treated hundreds of our rescued Labs -- preparing them for their forever homes.  He is always available to us for medical questions and expert advice.  We can say without a doubt, that without this wonderful vet, Safe Harbor Lab Rescue would not be where it is today.

Congratulations, Dr. Carpenter, from all of us at Safe Harbor!!
TUCKERSUCCESSOCTOBER SUCCESS STORY
- Tucker

                                                                             Adoption day

Tucker had reached the end of his alotted time at a local shelter when they called us.  We're so happy that they did -- we couldn't resist sharing his new dad's entire email to us.  Steve grew up helping his family train Labs as Guide Dogs, so he's very familiar with the breed.

Hey Leslie - I don't know if you have submitted the article yet, but I meant to send you a few short tidbits of funny stuff Tucker has done since I've had him...

The day I first drove him home, he climbed all the way up to the front seat. Normally I would have made sure he stayed in the back, but I felt so bad, he seemed really nervous and I wanted him to feel comfortable. So we rode home all the way together in the front and he laid his head and front paws on my lap and the rest of his body across the middle console ...and he wouldnt budge, he just laid all over me the entire way home.

That night I took him to a park to run around and he immediately found the largest puddle and plopped down in it and just sat there for a minute before he was ready to play. Then later in the night the sprinklers came on and he was just running from one to the next, standing in the sprinkler letting the water hit him. Needless to say my first day/night with him was a wet one!!

I had remembered what you said about him loving water so much and that he would even jump in the shower!  So I always made sure to shut the shower door when I had the water running.  Well, about 2 weeks after I had him, I turned the shower on, went to grab something from another room and forgot to shut the door, and when I came back he was laying down in the shower with his eyes closed just hanging out, loving the water spraying on him.

He's been extremely well-behaved in the house, he only has slipped up stealing food twice.  Once I left a chunk of cheese on the counter when I went in the other room and I came back in and he was just sitting there staring at me with the most guilty face so I knew he had done something, and then I noticed the cheese was gone!  Another time I was eating dinner in front of the tv and I got up to go to the kitchen and came back in and he had stolen the rest of my BBQ sandwich off the table in front of me.  That time I caught him in the act licking the plate clean, I guess he couldnt resist.

Otherwise he has been great.  I taught him last week to flip a bone off his nose into the air and catch it!  And he's really good at it - he's very smart.  I keep his balls and toys in a box on my back porch and when we go outside he goes right to it, opens it up with his nose, sticks his head in, and takes out whatever toy or ball he wants to play with.  And he even puts the balls back when we're done before we go inside.  He's really settled in nicely, his barking is down to a bare minimum, he gets along great with other dogs, and just always wants to play! everyone always comments on what a great-looking dog he is!!

Anyways, hope this is some good info for your article, let me know if you want to know anything else in particular. look forward to seeing it!  Thanks,

Steve

LabFest 2008  Follow-up
The dog days of summer held out for LabFest on Saturday September 20.  The weather was warm with not a cloud in the sky.  Dozens of happy, tail wagging Labs chased balls and swam in the pool, while their owners enjoyed the BBQ, silent auction and comradery of other Lab lovers.

Once again we had many wonderful silent auction items; Bronco tickets, baskets of dog treats and toys, tools and gift cards.   All of the food and beverages served were donated by Colorado businesses.  With your generosity we raised over $5000 for the Labs - it's a good day to be a Lab.

Coordinating an event this large would not have been possible if it wasn't for the many volunteers who came early and stayed late -Many wags to you!

A special thanks to Katie Rollins and Stephanie Ebel, our Arvada West vet technicians for their pedicure expertise and emergency toe wraps!

CowboySpaceInvaderControlling the "Space Invader"

by Laura Brody, CPDT, APDT, Dog Behavior Specialist

You know these dogs. The ones who are in your face (or other parts) when you sit down. They have no respect for your space...They are the Space Invaders!

To stop this insidious behavior we must teach the dog that it is more productive to sit a few feet from us than in our faces.

Behind every bad behavior there is a reinforcer. Space Invaders find the human's pushing and whining rewarding not to mention the times when, without even thinking about what we are doing, we pet, scratch and massage the space invading dog.

Stop reinforcing this behavior and teach the dog to "back".  Step into the dog, saying, "back". This literally means, "back out of my space". When she steps back, reward. Repeat a few times until the dog will willingly back away from you and reward with food or some petting and rubbing.

Control the space around the dog and you control the dog.

Volunteer Spotlight
- Mary Downs

Petite in stature with a huge heart, Mary Downs is our Foster Program Co-Coordinator.  Mary is a volunteer who always has a kind word, is incredibly organized, tirelessly committed to the Labs and has a marvelous sense of humor -all unparalleled assets when it comes to the daily stress of rescuing Labs!

After Mary retired from her career with the Environmental Protection Agency, she eventually found Safe Harbor. She's fostered a number of Labs and is the proud "foster failure" of handsome Barkley, now nine.  Mary has also transported lots of Labs, done foster recruiting and coordinated a number of community events for us before finding her incredibly appreciated niche as the foster co-coordinator responsible for getting newly rescued Labs to a safe place.

Mary is an avid outdoor lover - hiking, biking, running, dog walking and enjoying breakfast, lunch and dinner outside whenever she can. She's a life long Lab lover. Safe Harbor and the Labs are truly fortunate to have such a dedicated volunteer!
