The Pines of Dresden Newsletter
January 2010  Issue #5
Greetings!

Welcome to The PinesWe  are looking forward to another happy and successful year here at The Pines.  We hope that all of you will be able to include Dresden in your 2010 travel plans.  In keeping with the times, our rates will remain level for the third consecutive year,  giving our guests 2007 pricing throughout 2010 .

We hope this will encourage you to give a small business like ours the chance to show you the personal care and attention the larger chains lack. Staying in a local bed and breakfast not only gives a much more convenient location, but also completes the small-town experience and gives you a first hand view of what makes Dresden so special.

If you are coming up for a day trip, give us a call and stop by The Pines.  We will be happy to give you a tour of The Oldest House in Dresden, built in 1812.  Just put visiting Dresden on your travel to-dos for 2010!

Sincerely,

The Pines of Dresden Bed & Breakfast
Join us for our Scrapbooking Retreats
Our first scrapbooking retreat went off without a hitch.  The Pines was full of creativity with all the guests sharing ideas, equipment, and stories. Here's what one guest had to say:
Scrapbookers You are both so warm and friendly as if we've known each other forever... The fireplace, cozy bed and of course the food.  Geez, what else can I say?  I had an awesome stay and would love to do it again.
For me, it was such a fun weekend as I hung up my hostess hat and got to remember how much I love scrapping.  I can't wait for the next retreat!

 When: Jan. 22-24, Feb. 19-21, Mar. 12-14
 How much?: $150 per person

The retreat includes:
  • Two nights lodging - double or triple occupancy
  • Meals and desserts included
  • Full use of The Pines of Dresden facility with plenty of cropping space

Give us a call at 740-754-4422 or email thepinesofdresden@gmail.com to ensure your spot!

Don't worry about the weather, we will give rainchecks to parties that must cancel due to bad weather.  Besides, The Pines is a very cozy place in the wintertime.  We'd love to share it with you.

The Changing of the Guard
AbbyThis is a bitter sweet article to write. As many of you know, we lost our dear Abby, to cancer this past August.  Champion Jackpott's Absolut retired from the dog show circuit in August 2006 to become Abby, the devoted greeter at both our B&B and at our Dresden Welcome Center. She loved spending time with all of our guests, and from the influx of codolences we received, we know that she was well-loved by many people.

SicilyThrough the loss of Abby, we are now able to give a home to another bulldog.  She, like Abby, belonged to my father and, like Abby, had a very illustrious career in the shows and a name to go with it: Champion Jackpott's Sicilian Kiss.  To us she is just sweet little Sicily (or Sissy for short).  She is 2 years old and has been training very hard for her duties as the mascot for The Pines.

While Abby remains in our hearts and memories, we are so happy to welcome Sicily into our hearts and home.  We invite all of you to come meet our newest addition to The Pines.

Featured Recipe: Bacon and Maple Grits Puff

We have had so many requests for this recipe, many by guests who thought they didn't like grits!

8 slices bacon
2 cups milk
11/4 cups water
1 cup quick-cooking grits
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup pure maple syrup*
4 eggs
Fresh chives

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.  Cook bacon until crisp. Remove bacon reserving 2 tablespoons bacon drippings. Combine milk, water, grits and salt in medium saucepan. Bring to a boil , stirring frequently. Simmer 2 to 3 minutes until mixture thickens, stirring constantly. Remove from heat; stir in syrup and bacon drippings. Crumble bacon; save 1/4 cup for garnish. Stir remaining bacon into grits mixture. Beat eggs in medium bowl. Gradually stir small amount of grits mixture into eggs, then stir back into remaining grits mixture. Pour into greased casserole dish.
Bake 1 hour and 20 minutes. Top with bacon and fresh chives. Serve immediately. Makes 6 to 8 servings.
*it is very important to use pure maple syrup.

About Us
After having our B&B for over 3 Years, we are very happy to report that we have experienced none of the "burnout" that we had been warned about.  We love opening our home to people from all over and hearing the stories of their travels, children, and pets.  We have made so many close friends among our guests and have even been treated to stays at some of their houses.  We truly feel that we could travel to almost any state and have a good friend to visit.  We look forward to building on those friendships and starting many new.

Sincerely,
Marin & Alli
