The Pines of Dresden Bed & Breakfast Newsletter Issue #3
 September
2008

 The Pines B&B LogoGreetings!

It's time for edition #3 of The Pines of Dresden Newsletter. It's the September issue and its still technically September, at least for another couple of hours.  We are nothing if not procrastinators.

However, this time we have a reason.  We have officially started the busy fall season.  The weather is cooling down, the leaves are changing, and our Dresden calendar of events is coming into stride.  A short while ago was the Dresden Melon Festival, once an anticipated annual event, making its comeback. This weekend is the Dresden Oktoberfest, which promises to be a great time. Outdoor food, music and entertainment is always a recipe for fun. We are hoping for some good pictures to include in October's newsletter which, if we stick to our current pattern, should be arriving some time in early November.

So we hope you enjoy this month's Pines of Dresden newsletter.  We have a new photo-book service available and a great new recipe to try. Don't forget to forward this to all your friends and family who may be interested in our little town and a great place to stay when they visit.

A taste of Germany

Beer Girl
This is probably our favorite event here in Dresden. People from this and surrounding areas head to Dresden for a bit of the small town German experience. Food, drink and merriment are the hallmarks of this event and everyone who attends is sure to have a great time.

If you are in the area this Saturday, be sure to drop by 6th and Main. Festivities begin at noon. Hope to see you there

Past Event: Melon Festival & Car Show.
What goes better together than fast cars and big melons?

House and Sign

Dresden took a step back in time with its 8th Annual Car Show and Melon Festival.  Main Street was lined with classic cars, great hits from the 50's and 60's were sounding through the town, and down by the river was the Dresden Melon Festival.  Everywhere you went, there was something to do.  The street was full of admirers awing at the beautiful cars, and the river boat dock and park was full of families playing games and eating hometown food.  The park's new walking trail was christened with a 5K run, and there was live entertainment.  But the most popular game of the day:  the seed spittin' contest, won by a little girl.

Around Town
Remnants of Ike

Moving to Ohio, we figured we would be safe from hurricanes.  But Ike still sent a major windstorm that swept through Dresden earlier this month.

Like the rest of the state, many homes lost power, some for up to a week. Here at the Pines of Dresden we lost power for about 26 hours, from Sunday afternoon to Monday evening. In that time I realized again how dependent we are on electricity. No TV, internet, microwave, stove, lights or even telephones. For a night we got to live like earlier inhabitants of this 200 year old house, and that was plenty long enough for us.

To make things even more interesting, we had a full house of guests who needed to dry their hair! Luckily they had been here before and had a great sense of humor about the whole situation, and still had a wonderful time playing cards by candlelight. And I got out of cooking breakfast.
Dear Abby
Pictures and musings of a lazy dog

You call this retirement?

Some people say I'm lazy. I'm not lazy, I'm retired.  I earned all the naps I take.  For those of you who didn't know, I worked very hard in my younger years as a Champion show dog.

I gave up the glamorous life a couple of years ago to spend my retirement lazing away the afternoons on the porch of a peaceful B&B.  Sounds like the life, huh?

Well, a few weeks ago I started working again.  I am now the official greeter at the Dresden Welcome Center on the weekends giving every visitor the same warm welcome I give the guests of The Pines!  I take pride in this important job, and I get paid well in head-pats and milk-bones. So, next time you are in Dresden, please come to the Welcome Center and say hi. We'll be waiting for you.

Group Profile: The Basket Babes of Greensburg PA.

No one likes to work on their birthday.  Well, you would if your work included the Basket Babes of Greensburg!  Hours before they arrived at our place, a sign declaring "Happy Birthday!" magically appeared at the end of our driveway.  I was lucky enough to be sharing my birthday with 2 other girls from their group and they included us in all the festivities.

We went to Raven's Glenn for a wonderful dinner and birthday cake, and then we headed to The Depot for karaoke.  Luckily, they didn't make the birthday girls sing.  And the best present of all: we didn't have breakfast the next morning until 10am.

This Months Recipe
Roasted Red Pepper & Tomato Soup

This spring we attempted our first ever vegetable garden. The results were pretty good. Lots of big delicious zucchini, loads of fresh fragrant herbs, and an abundant supply of red ripe tomatoes. This recipe takes advantage of those flavorful vine ripened tomatoes and pairs it with roasted red bell peppers for a rich, velvety soup that is wonderful either  hot or cold. Serve topped with fresh basil.

Ingredients
3 roasted red bell peppers, peeled, seeded and chopped
4-5 medium tomatoes, peeled, seeded and chopped
1 medium onion, chopped
1-2 garlic cloves, chopped
1 ½ teaspoons thyme
2 teaspoons paprika
½ table spoon sugar
Cayenne pepper
Few drops hot pepper sauce
Salt & Pepper to taste
6 cups chicken broth
2 tablespoons butter
2 table spoons flour

Directions:
Cook onions & garlic until soft, then add tomatoes and 2 peppers. Add thyme, sugar, paprika cayenne pepper and pepper sauce.  Cook over medium heat until nearly all liquid evaporates. Add chicken broth and bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer for about 30 minutes. Working in batches, puree soup and strain into bowl or pitcher. In large pot, melt butter and add flour, cooking until golden about 1 minute or so. Slowly add soup, stirring constantly. Add salt & pepper, remaining chopped pepper and simmer for 10 minutes. Serve with dollop of sour cream for an even richer soup.

 Introducing The PLANT NANNY!
The easiest way to water your indoor plants or baskets.

Plant Nanny
The Plant Nanny is a clay spike that you put into your plants soil. Into that spike goes either an empty wine bottle (Very cool) or a standard plastic drink bottle up to 1 liter in size. The water slowly dissipates through the spike and encourages healthy root growth for stronger plants. The best part is, when the water runs out, you just refill the bottle.

It's super easy. No more carrying around a heavy bucket full of water, or messy draining hanging pots. We use them in all of our plants at the B&B and they have been timesavers for us and lifesavers for our plants.

$7 each or 4 for $24 (Wine Bottle Size)

$5 each ( Drink Bottles up to 1 liter)
