 The Pines B&B LogoGreetings!

Hello and welcome to our first addition of the Pines of Dresden B&B newsletter! This is our way of keeping you up to date with whats going on in our town and a way for us to keep in touch with our favorite guests.

Summer is here and we have made a lot of improvements to the place. Dresden Homecoming has come and gone with a lovely small town parade and some great live entertainment . The Lorena Dinner Cruise & Redneck Auction gave us a chance to raise money for the town and have a wonderful dinner on the mighty Muskingum River.

So we hope you enjoy this, our first of monthly (hopefully) newsletters as a year round connection to your home away from home. Hope to see you soon!

Cruisin' the Muskingum                Lorena Dinner Cruise

Lorena Dinner CruiseLast month the Dresden Village Association had its second annual Dinner Cruise and Redneck Auction Fundraiser on the Lorena Sternwheeler.  It was a relaxing ride up the Muskingum River and provided a nice dinner and a lot of laughs for our guests who accompanied us for the trip.  Should the cruise be available during your stay, please don't pass up the opportunity to see Zanesville from the water.

Dresden Days are commin' up!
Basket Bee Party Time

Dresden Days
At the end of the month Dresden will be having its Dresden Days celebration that coincides with the Longaberger Basket Bee. This year, in addition to weekend basket vendors, Main Street will feature a side walk sale that runs from July 28th to the 1st of August. Add to that games, refreshment vendors, live entertainment and a block party Saturday night, and you have all the makings of great week. For more information, drop us an email or look for our tent during the event. We should be by the beer wagon.
Dear Abby
Pictures and musings of a lazy dog

Hula Abby !!As a bulldog, I love summer! The weather is warm and you know what that means?  Barbecues! and do you know what that means? BBQ food scraps!  I've been so bad on my diet, I'm having trouble squeezing into my bikini; though I have lost 10 pounds this spring.  My trim girly figure is not the only thing new around here.  Toby and I have a new little brother.  He is a yellow kitten with no tail.  If you ask me, I think he is pretty funny looking, but we can't all be beauties.  My parents call him Biscuit, but I have my own names for him.  Thank goodness  he lives outside with Toby.  Oh! I smell Burgers on the grill, think I'll mosey on over and make sure I get cheese on mine!  I'll start back on my diet tomorrow...

This Months Recipe
Chilled Zucchini Soup

Perfect for the warmer summer weather, a chilled soup is a great way to cool you palate at the beginning of a meal, or as a light lunch with some bread and a glass of wine.

Chilled Zucchini soup is one of my favorites and I like to make it from the fresh herbs and vegetables that I have in the new garden. This is a great make ahead soup. Once it's cooled, all you need is pour and garnish for a tasty summer soup.

Ingredients:

3 medium sized zucchinis
2 large onions
1 clove chopped garlic
2 cups chicken broth
1 teaspoon or so lemon juice
1 cup Mayonnaise
Salt to taste
Fresh dill for garnish

Heat small amount of olive oil in large pot or Dutch oven. Add all chopped vegetables and cook until softened, about 5 minutes or so then add chicken broth. Bring to a boil and for 2 minutes. Let cool to room temperature and blend in batches until smooth. Add mayo and lemon juice and chill soup. Serve garnished with fresh dill.

Improvements at the Pines
Front Garden
This year we have made quite a bit of improvements to the Pines of Dresden. In addition to the new accent lighting (Thanks to our two new friends Mike & Steve) we have put in some flower, vegetable and herb gardens.

Gone are the bushes of clover and ragweed (that we mistook for landscaping  plants) that greeted you as you stepped out of your car. Instead a garden of roses and other colorful perennials in beautiful flagstone enclosures are the first things to welcome you back.

The Depot in Dresden
New owners of Dresdens finest restaurant

The Depot Restaurant
Many of you are already familiar with the Depot. It offers great food and a place to send the men while you shop. You can enjoy your food either inside where it is cool and comfortable, or on the spacious patio where you can watch Dresden go by.

What you may not know is that the Depot has recently change hands. Rick and Sherry, the owners of the Village Victorian and Ivy bed and breakfasts have just acquired the restaurant and are looking to improve on what already was a good thing.

Sherry is adding a lighter, healthier section to the menu and having tried both the Angus steak wrap and the (Lighter) creamed chicken over biscuits, I can tell you they are welcome additions to a classic menu.

All of Dresden is excited to see what these two can do with the Village's favorite place to eat.

The Garden Cafe
Alfresco Relaxation
The Garden Cafe
Probably our most noticeable addition is that of the outdoor patio that we have christened the "Garden Cafe." It is a 10X10 gazebo enclosed patio that is the perfect place for lounging in the spacious back yard. It has seating for 6 people and is THE place to enjoy dinner and watch the fireflies. A flagstone walkway from the house insures that your feet stay dry from morning dew as you sip your coffee while enjoying the outdoor serenity the Pines now offers.

 Introducing The PLANT NANNY!
The easiest way to water your indoor plants or baskets.

Plant Nanny
The Plant Nanny is a clay spike that you put into your plants soil. Into that spike goes either an empty wine bottle (Very cool) or a standard plastic drink bottle up to 1 liter in size. The water slowly dissipates through the spike and encourages healthy root growth for stronger plants. The best part is, when the water runs out, you just refill the bottle.

It's super easy. No more carrying around a heavy bucket full of water, or messy draining hanging pots. We use them in all of our plants at the B&B and they have been timesavers for us and lifesavers for our plants.

$7 each or 4 for $24 (Wine Bottle Size)

$5 each ( Drink Bottles up to 1 liter)
