Fresh Food Desert?

Tomatoe GardenFrom back porches to city owned lots, local residents are bringing fresh fruits and vegetables to the dinner table despite the unwillingness of local store owners to appropriately supply this demand.

Above a local resident of the SOHI District uses the eastern sunlight to bathe 3 newly potted "air" tomatoe gardens.  You can find three other local gardens at 26th & Clybourn, 25th & Michigan and 32nd & St. Paul .

SOHI goes Hollywood?
NGNM ExplosionThe SOHI District with its turn-of-the-century building stock seems to be the perfect backdrop for writer/director Terry Green's "No God, No Master" starring David Strathairn.  Currently the productiion crew is in talks with several SOHI property owners to use their buildings for on location filming.  Maybe we can get some SOHI residents as extras in this early 1900's film on the labor movement in New York.  For more information click on the picture above.

Land Banking
In this You Tube presentation Professor Frank Alexander of Emory Law School explains a model of land banking.  Land banking is a tool many cities and nonprofits across the country are using to deal with foreclosed properties.
