Ninety percent of those who participated in United Way-funded health education programs said they would be healthier in the future because of what they learned.

SUCCESS STORYStory

From the American Red Cross Capitol Region Chapter's Emergency Response and Support Services program, one of 42 United Way of Stanislaus County funded programs:

A cold October morning we received a call to a home that had been destroyed in a fire. When we arrived on scene the home was totally destroyed and nothing remained but smoke drifting off of what was once someone's home. One of the children sitting next to me (a young girl of 16) looked up and said, "Where will we go? What about all my clothes, my photos of grandparents, my friends?" The young girl started to cry. The children who lived in the home had only pajamas -- no shoes, socks or slippers. I explained that she and her sibling would have a warm and safe place to stay, warm meals, clothes and shoes to wear while their parents found another place to live

In early January I received a phone call from that young girl thanking me for being there and making it easier for her parents. They were able to move into another house just a few days after the fire and she wanted me to know that because of what we did for her and her family, she wanted to become a volunteer and help others like we helped her and her family.

The Emergency Response and Support Services program gives people who are displaced by a home fire a moment of peace during a very difficult time. They are in shock after their house is destroyed and they desperately need to have a place to go where they can enjoy a good meal, dry clothing, and an opportunity to move ahead and rebuild what they have lost.

"Giving is a necessity. . .
more urgent, indeed, than having."
