CALLS WE RECEIVE,
HOW WE HELP
twooneone

This series features phone calls our 2-1-1 operators receive and how they provide information and referrals to people in need in our community.

A few weeks ago a 2-1-1 operator received a call from an 11-year-old who called 2-1-1 on behalf of her sister who was 16 and five months pregnant.  The sister had nothing at the time and was in need of baby clothing, baby furniture, diapers, and formula.

She hoped to get these items for her sister as a surprise because the young mother-to-be had so little.  She also requested clothing for older children in the family and anger management counseling for herself.

She found out about United Way's 2-1-1 service from a card she received at school.

As a result, the 2-1-1 operator provided referrals on the phone and through the mail to local nonprofit organizations in that could help meet the family's needs.

This is one of many calls our 2-1-1 operators receive daily.

On Friday, Feb. 11th, The Modesto Bee published an article about our 2-1-1 service. Read it here.

You can't just take, you have to give back to your community. I've felt that way my whole life. I was born in the Depression. I saw people in the bread lines, and I know how hard it was for our family to make ends meet. I know what it's like to be down and out, and it's just natural, I think, that you have a heart for helping people in that situation. That's why I'm trying so hard to instill the feeling of giving to young people.

ARE YOUR READY FOR

THE NEXT DISASTER?SHARE

On May 18th, the United Way will participate in the State of California's Golden Guardian disaster exercise.

The exercise will test emergency service personnel.  The county's Office of Emergency Services will ask the United Way of Stanislaus County to activate its Emergency Volunteer Center (EVC) and the 2-1-1 center.  The exercise will be a simulated flood event.

During the drill, some participants will act as people wanting to help during the flood. The EVC will coordinate and process those volunteers. The EVC will register the applicants, process applications, interview, train and provide assignments.

If you are interested in helping, please contact Michael Wilkinson at 523-4562, extension 100.

In addition to the EVC which will be deployed that day, the 2-1-1 center will provide support to Stanislaus County and the cities by assisting the Emergency Operations Center in providing information to the public.

The 2-1-1 center will also provide the vital link to family reunification with the local hospitals.  This new system will allow local emergency first responders and hospitals to track the locations and condition of victims.  This information is then transferred to the 2-1-1 center, providing a direct link for family members to call to find out where their loved ones are located after a disaster.

The United Way staff has been trained and is anxious to test these new skills during this disaster exercise.
