CALLS WE RECEIVE,
HOW WE HELP
twooneone

This series features phone calls our 2-1-1 operators receive and how they provide information and referrals to people in need in our community.

A 2-1-1 employee received a call from a family of five in need of food.  The mother was crying and said she had just used the last three eggs that she had.  She also explained that she was 2 ½ months pregnant and her husband had been laid off from his job and had not been able to find work.

The family was not eligible for food stamps because of their citizenship status and afraid to try.  The 2-1-1 operator called local food banks to see if they could still help the family based on the citizenship status.

The 2-1-1 operator connected the family with the Salvation Army and they were provided with immediate assistance for food and given additional referrals for the following day.

On Friday, Feb. 11th, The Modesto Bee published an article talking about our 2-1-1 service. Read it here.

Giving is a necessity sometimes. . . more urgent, indeed, than having.  Margaret Lee Rumbeck
HELPING CHILDREN REACH THEIR POTENTIALSTORY
B&N Book Drive 6

A special thank you goes to our local Barnes & Noble (B&N) Bookstore here in Modesto.

In December B&N ran a children's book drive to support United Way and our partner programs.

B&N Book Drive 4

A total of 633 books were donated!

Those books were given to the Parent Resource Center and Stanislaus Literacy Center.  (Both organizations have been featured in previous newsletters in February and March.)

One of the three focus areas  of our work at United Way is to provide support for educational programs in our community to help children and youth achieve their potential.

B&N Book Drive 1

Thank you Lauren Tuggle and Susan Horn from B&N for supporting our work to help children and youth reach their potential through reading!
